Rahul Gandhi hails Karnataka's gig workers' welfare ordinance
Bengaluru/New Delhi: Congress MP and opposition leader in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, Thursday lauded the state govt's decision to promulgate an ordinance establishing a social security board for platform-based gig workers, calling it a "historic step" that reflects the party's vision for workers' rights across the country. Referring to slogans he heard during his nationwide march, Rahul, in a post on X, said: "'Rating nahi, haq chaahiye'. 'Insaan hai hum, ghulaam nahi'. These powerful words from gig workers stayed with me during the Bharat Jodo Yatra." He went on to say: "Our Congress govt in Karnataka has taken a historic step by issuing an ordinance that guarantees rights, dignity, and protection to gig workers... These workers bring us food, deliver essentials, and drive us safely — in the heat, cold, and rain." Pointing to exploitative conditions gig workers face, he said: "Yet, they are too often blocked from their apps without explanation, denied sick leave, and paid according to opaque algorithms. We are changing that." Rahul said the new ordinance ensures social security, fair contracts, transparency in algorithmic pay, and an end to arbitrary blocking. "This is how technology should serve people — driving innovation and justice. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Rajasthan showed the way. Karnataka has acted. Telangana is next." In Bengaluru, Karnataka labour minister Santosh Lad expressed gratitude to governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot for swiftly approving the ordinance, and credited Rahul for bringing the issue to the forefront. After leading a delegation of gig workers to felicitate the governor, Lad said: "Today, the vision of our leader Rahul Gandhi has been realised. We thank the governor for passing the ordinance within a day of it being sent to Raj Bhavan. " He said platforms which use services of gig workers to "further their profits" must consider the welfare of these employees "who inhale carbon dioxide day in and day out". "I am not going to blame anyone, but it is important to consider the social security of these workers," he said. However, while praising Gehlot for his prompt action, Lad also criticised Raj Bhavan over delays in approving other bills. "It is only in non-BJP governed states that Raj Bhavans withhold assent for bills," Lad said. "In BJP-governed states such actions are unheard of. Our youngsters need to understand the consequences of such actions, why there is a debate on Article 142 in the country and why courts are intervening in such matters. " The ordinance paves the way for the establishment of a Gig Workers Welfare Board, expected to be a first-of-its-kind step towards regulating platform-based work and providing structured protection to lakhs of delivery partners, drivers, and other on-demand workers in the state.

You sell 'sindoor everywhere' but go silent in front of US: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee hits back at PM Narendra Modi
KOLKATA: CM Mamata Banerjee returned PM Narendra Modi's fire less than an hour after the latter's Alipurduar rally, accusing the BJP-led Centre of 'going silent in front of America', selling 'sindoor everywhere' and using Operation Sindoor for 'political traction'. 'Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor have become election issues, discussed in rallies in the PM's presence. Other netas are calling this election rally 'Operation Bengal' in the PM's presence,' she said, latching on to junior Union minister Sukanta Majumdar's 'Operation Bengal after Operation Sindoor' statement at the Alipurduar rally. WB CM Mamata Banerjee launches scathing attack on PM Modi, dares PM to debate against her on TV 'What Modi said today left us shocked and saddened. Is it appropriate for him and his ministers to talk about Operation Bengal... (in the same breath as) Operation Sindoor when the opposition is representing the country globally to protect national interests? This implies equating Bengal with terrorism. He is insulting Bengal and its dignity. Hold elections tomorrow if you have the courage,' she dared Modi. 'Why have the terrorists responsible for wiping the sindoor (away from our women) not been arrested yet? Big talk.... Your words fail you and you fall silent in front of America. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo They are playing politics with a serious issue, which is unacceptable,' Banerjee said, adding: 'First he was a tea seller, then a chowkidar. Now he is selling sindoor everywhere, even in election campaigns.' The CM also responded to PM Modi's 'cruelty' barbs, accusing BJP of being 'the mastermind behind riots'. 'Bengal is not cruel, it has a humane administration. What has Modi's sarkar done for country? Blue films are screened on the streets of UP. The party's MPs disrespect women, the PM should sack them first. He speaks of corruption but corruption is highest in BJP-governed states,' she said. We act if there is a complaint against our administration. What excuse does Modi have when terrorists are caught in Gujarat? You created trouble in Murshidabad and Malda. How many people were killed in Delhi? Why did the Assam CM say they would give rifles to citizens?' she asked. Banerjee then referred to Madhya Pradesh's Vyapam scam to return the PM's SSC recruitment fire: 'Who filed the court case? The CPM and the BJP (did). What happened in Vyapam in MP? How many people died? Some 10,000 teachers lost their jobs in Tripura, 69,000 teachers lost jobs in UP. But we are humane in Bengal; we will find a way. We will respect the court and do something for the teachers, too.' The Bengal CM referred to the state's schemes while slamming the centre for not paying Bengal its dues. 'You talk of roads and homes but have you given the money? We are building roads and houses on our own with state funds. Why has the money for building houses been stopped? May you live for 175 years... ayushman. But we have the Swasthya Sathi, which is a better scheme. We provide it to everyone, unlike you,' she said, accusing the centre of 'bulldozing the federal structure'.

Gorakhpur fair in Ghazni aide's name called off
GORAKHPUR: Gorakhpur's iconic Bale Miyan fair will not take place this year amid claims by the organisers that local authorities in BJP-governed UP have not granted clearance. This will be the first break in the 900-year-old tradition of the fair held in the name of Syed Salar Masud Ghazi , believed to be one of Mahmud of Ghazni's commanders. The hiatus in Gorakhpur fair — named after Ghazi who is locally referred to as Bale Miyan — comes weeks after cancellations of similar events held in his name in Bahraich and Sambhal. This was followed by CM Yogi Adityanath 's assertion that 'glorification of invaders amounted to treason, which independent India will not tolerate'.

Punjab chief secretary, DGP face contempt for defying HC order on water row
Dam dispute CHANDIGARH: Punjab and Haryana HC Friday issued contempt notices to Punjab chief secretary and DGP for defying its earlier orders on non-interference in the functioning of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). "Prima facie, it is a case of violation of our orders. Let Punjab file a reply. If you do not permit the BBMB chairman to visit his installation, how will he manage day-to-day affairs of the board?" observed Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, part of a two-judge division bench. The case stems from AAP-governed Punjab's refusal to comply with a BBMB directive to release an additional 4,500 cusecs of water to BJP-governed Haryana and the alleged confinement of board's chairman by protesters. Operation Sindoor PM Modi meets NSA, chiefs of armed forces amid spike in tensions with Pak India's air defence systems shoot down Pak drones in J&K, Punjab & Rajasthan Several airports in India to be closed till May 15 - check list Punjab govt counsel Gurminder Singh urged HC not to issue the notice, warning it could disturb law and order due to surcharged public sentiment. But the bench noted it was only seeking a response, not ordering imprisonment. When asked if the state would comply with HC's May 6 order, Singh said he could not give an undertaking without instructions. The court pointed out that Punjab should have either complied or challenged the order. BBMB's counsel submitted an affidavit by board chairman Manoj Tripathi, claiming he and his team were prevented from working by Punjab Police. The counsel added they had videographic evidence showing non-compliance of the May 6 directive. ASG Satya Pal Jain informed HC that a May 2 meeting chaired by Union home secretary had decided to release the extra water. But Singh argued the home secretary had no jurisdiction. BBMB counsel said Centre has been requested to deploy paramilitary at the site.

‘Jealous of Bengal?' CM Mamata Banerjee hits out over temple row, attacks on Bengalis
KOLKATA/BEHRAMPORE: CM on Monday upped the ante against BJP-governed and other states, accusing Odisha of being 'jealous' and its residents of thrashing 'anyone speaking Bengali'. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'They issued a notification asking people not to visit Digha's Jagannath temple. We all visit Puri. We do not ask so many questions. Why is this bothering them so much? Why so much jealousy?' the CM asked, referring to the regular posers from Odisha ministers and seniors since her inauguration of the Jagannath temple in Digha last week. 'Are you trying to say that I stole neem wood for Jagannath Dham? Mamata Banerjee will steal? I have not reached such a state. I have four neem trees in my backyard. Ask them how many they need,' Banerjee added, while reminding Odisha that the maximum number of devotees going to Puri's Jagannath temple was from Bengal. 'They asked Daitapati (Rajesh Daitapati, Puri temple's chief servitor and also a Digha temple trustee) from where he got the neem wood for the Digha temple. He has said that he procured it from somewhere else. No question was asked when I built a skywalk in Dakshineswar. No question was asked about the Kalighat skywalk. I perform Durga Puja and Kali Puja and there are no questions. But Jagannath Dham seems to have hit a raw point,' she said, asking Odisha 'not to behave like this'. 'I respect the Puri Jagannath Dham. Kali temples are found at many places across the country, so are Shiva temples. Any temple can exist anywhere. You never ask about temples when BJP does something. Why are they (BJP) so angry now?' the Bengal CM asked. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'I love Puri, I love Odisha. Why does it hurt them so much? RSS and BJP protest when I go to Puri. But Bengal supplies potatoes when your stocks run short. You seek engineers from us when a cyclone disrupts your power supply. The largest number of tourists going to Puri is from Bengal. What is the harm if we establish a Jagannath Dham in Digha?' CM Mamata Banerjee asked. Banerjee also questioned the rationale behind thrashing anyone speaking Bengali in Odisha and other BJP-governed states. 'Why are you attacking our people? Bengali-speaking people are being targeted in Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh as well. You are attacking our migrant workers for speaking Bengali but we will not do the same. That is the difference between you and me,' the CM said. All four states — Odisha, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar — are governed by BJP with or without its allies. 'Over 1.5 crore migrant workers from diverse religions and regions have come to Bengal. We do not want such instances or misunderstandings. We have reached out to Odisha, Bihar and Rajasthan (another BJP-governed state) and our chief secretary is writing to the union home secretary. Our DGP has spoken to his Odisha counterpart. I would request Odisha, Rajasthan and Bihar to look into this. We hope good sense prevails,' she added.
