Bills to be featured on Hard Knocks during training camp at St. John Fisher: What we know

For the first time in franchise history, the Buffalo Bills will be featured on HBO's popular Hard Knocks show. The HBO cameras will be imbedded with the Bills throughout training camp at St. John Fisher University, and they will then shift during the regular season to cover all four teams in the NFC East for the in-season version of the show. Advertisement The debut show for this season is scheduled to air Aug. 5. The reality documentary series made its debut in 2001 when it chronicled the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens. It continued in 2002 with the Cowboys, took a hiatus until 2007 when it followed the Chiefs, and it has been a staple every year since with the exception of 2011. In 2021, the series began to feature teams in season and the Colts, Cardinals and Dolphins were the first three teams to agree to do this, and then last year came the introduction of in-season full division coverage when the AFC North was featured. There have been many memorable moments on the show, and just last year when the Giants were the featured team, the HBO cameras captured the team's ill-fated decision to cut ties with running back Saquon Barkley. Bills have not previously been on Hard Knocks The Bills have not been on the show for a couple of reasons. When it debuted, the Bills were embarking on what became a 17-year playoff drought and interest simply wasn't high on a losing, small-market team. Advertisement More recently, as the Bills have ascended to become an AFC power, HBO was certainly interested, but the Bills have been reluctant to appear to on the show because they are a franchise that likes to keep things inside the walls of One Bills Drive as much as they can. Sean McDermott will be speaking to reporters on Tuesday when the Bills practice and the media has access, and he will surely be asked about this. Perhaps not, but one can assume he probably isn't thrilled by the idea. However, he likely didn't have much choice. Teams can only avoid being selected if they have a first-year head coach, have appeared on the show in the last eight years and will participate in the in-season version of the show at some point in the next two seasons. The Bills do not fit into any of that criteria so in other words, it was their turn. This is obviously big news for the Rochester area because the HBO cameras are likely going to be focusing on different places in the region, though most of the footage will be captured at St. John Fisher. Bills sign standout WR to contract extension: What we know

INDIANAPOLIS - The first of the Buffalo Bills' five key contract extension decisions this offseason was made Tuesday, and wide receiver Khalil Shakir has cashed in. Various reports, which general manager Brandon Beane will likely confirm when he speaks to reporters Tuesday afternoon at the scouting combine, indicate the deal is four years with a total potential value of $60.2 million, though the key figure is $32 million guaranteed. Shakir was heading into the final season of his original four-year rookie contract which was worth $3.2 million. It is uncertain what his number will be in 2025. Shakir was Buffalo's leading receiver in 2024 by a wide margin. He caught 76 of 100 targets for 821 yards and four TDs, and his 605 yards after the catch was the second-most among all wide receiver behind only Ja'Marr Chase of the Bengals who led receivers in catches, yards and TDs. Shakir also caught 18 of 20 targets in the postseason for 184 yards. He has been a home run draft pick for the Bills because Beane chose him in the fifth round out of Boise State in 2022. Since his arrival in Buffalo, Shakir has 125 receptions for 1,593 yards and seven TDs. Report: Bills name new special teams coordinator. What to know about the hire

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Buffalo Bills will be hiring Chris Tabor as their new special teams coordinator, replacing the fired Matthew Smiley. The 53-year-old spent more than a decade coaching in college including stops at Missouri, Utah State and Western Michigan before breaking into the NFL in 2008 as assistant special teams coach of the Chicago Bears. After three seasons he went to the Cleveland Browns and was their special teams coordinator from 2011-17, then returned to Chicago in that role from 2018-21 before moving on to the Carolina Panthers in 2022. In November 2023, former Bills quarterback Frank Reich was fired as head coach of the Panthers and Tabor was elevated to interim head coach but won only one of six games. He was out of the NFL in 2024. While the Bills never announced it, NFL Network reported on Super Bowl Sunday that was Smiley was being fired after eight years with the team, five as assistant special teams coach and the last three as the coordinator. Buffalo had some notable breakdowns in the kicking units during the 2024 season, and McDermott decided to move two weeks after he had said he would be bringing Smiley back in 2025. Tabor has a wealth of experience in this role and that is exactly what the Bills need. When he was with the Browns, he had a player win at least one AFC special teams player of the week award in six consecutive seasons and in 2012, when kicker Phil Dawson and return man Joshua Cribbs were selected to the Pro Bowl, it was just the second time in history that two players from the same team in one season. He was so highly thought of in Cleveland that he worked for four different head coaches - Pat Shurmur, Rod Chudzinski, Mike Pettine and Hue Jackson. With the Panthers, he took a unit that ranked 28th in Rick Gosselin's annual and widely respected special teams rankings and vaulted the Panthers up to fourth in 2022. That year the Panthers set a franchise record with four blocked field goals and also blocked an extra point, punter Johnny Hekker set a franchise mark with 39 punts inside the 20, and kicker Eddy Pineiro led the league with a 94.3% success rate on field goals. Tabor coached a return specialist to the Pro Bowl in each of his four seasons during his second stint as coordinator in Chicago - Jakeem Grant, Cordarelle Patterson (twice) and Tarik Cohen - as the Bears ranked fifth in yards per punt return (10.3) in that span and tied for sixth in the NFL with four special teams touchdowns.
