3 die in Ghaziabad as squall brings down walls and trees

Ghaziabad: Three people died and six were injured in accidents during the brief but intense storm that saw winds gusting up to 70kmph sweep through the city on Wednesday night. Police said a 40-year-old Mujammil, who was driving back home after finishing work in Sahibabad, was crushed under a tree that got uprooted during the squall in Madhuban Bapudham around 8.30pm. Ghaziabad DCP Dhawal Jaiswal said a passerby alerted cops about the accident. "Mujammil, a resident of Rasulpur Dasna, worked for a private company. He was returning home when the incident took place. He wore a helmet but sustained severe injuries to his chest," a senior police officer said on Thursday. The second incident was reported from Khoda Colony, where the boundary wall of a private school collapsed onto two shanties adjacent to it around 9pm. A 38-year-old woman died and five of her family were injured. ACP (Indirapuram) Abhishek Srivastava said labourers and their families lived in shanties next to BMR Adarsh Public School. The boundary wall of the school's second-floor terrace caved in during the sudden spate of rain. "Immediately, a police team reached the spot and took the injured to a nearby hospital. The ACP said that initial investigation indicates that the school's wall was built recently. "We are investigating how the incident occurred. No complaint has been made till now," the ACP said. Ravindra told TOI that Pani was making dinner for her family, and he was sitting with his son when the tin shed of his house collapsed. "A neighbour pulled us out of the debris, and I learnt that the school wall collapsed on the house… After I gained consciousness, I asked about my family and learnt that my wife had died while my son's treatment was underway," he said. Those injured are admitted to a private hospital in the city. Sarifa has severe injuries, and the others are stable, police said. Police in Masuri were pressed into action after a resident, who was returning home from a nearby vegetable market, slipped into a drain and sustained fatal head injuries. ACP (Masuri) Lipi Nagayach said the woman (50) was walking back home when the storm struck. "Muzammil's leg got stuck into a drain and she fell. She succumbed to her injuries at a hospital late on Wednesday night. Her family refused to get a post-mortem examination and did not file any complaint," the ACP said. A fourth incident was reported in Nandgram, where a hoarding at the GDA intersection was torn up and toppled onto the road, trapping a motorcyclist and critically injuring him. A police officer said that Suraj, who was crossing the intersection on his bike, has severe injuries to his spine. ACP (Nandgram) Poonam Mishra said the 24-year-old biker belongs to Ghukna. He is admitted to a private hospital and his condition is critical.
