Malaysiakini reporter suspended over alleged RM20,000 bribe returns to work after internal probe finds no wrongdoing

KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 – Malaysiakini said today that its journalist B Nantha Kumar has been reinstated yesterday, after an independent panel it commissioned found him not guilty of any disciplinary breaches. The news portal reported that its board of directors accepted the findings and recommendations of the panel, and will be considering the measures it proposed. 'Among other measures, Malaysiakini will strengthen its policies in certain areas concerning investigative journalism,' the board said. It said Nantha Kumar had previously been suspended with full benefits since March 5. Malaysiakini said the panel, which focused on journalistic practices, had reviewed Nantha Kumar's observance of editorial protocols while producing his reports. The site did not provide details on the inquiry's specific findings or the nature of the editorial concerns raised. Last month, Nantha Kumar pleaded not guilty when the charge under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009 was read out to him. Under the sole charge, hewas accused of soliciting RM20,000 in exchange for not uploading or publishing any news articles on an alleged foreign worker cartel syndicate involving Pakistanis on the news website. If convicted, he faces a fine of not less than five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, and imprisonment of up to 20 years. The Sessions Court in Shah Alam had fixed tomorrow as the date for case management.

MACC: Malaysiakini journalist detained for allegations of bribery

KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) confirmed the detention of a Malaysiakini journalist in regards to a bribery case last night. Sinar Harian reported that MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrest of the journalist, B Nantha Kumar, took place at a hotel in Shah Alam around 11pm. "The detention is related to allegations of bribery, and not in connection with news reports exposing issues related to illegal immigrants. It is believed that the journalist in question solicited a sum of RM20,000 from a Pakistani foreign worker agent to refrain from publishing an article on the smuggling of illegal immigrants," he said in a statement to Sinar Harian today. The journalist was taken to the Putrajaya Magistrate Court today for remand proceedings, and the case will be investigated under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009. Malaysiakini has responded to the allegations with executive editor RK Anand and managing editor Ng Ling Fong stating shock at the allegations involving a member of their staff. 'We have not heard Nantha's version of what transpired. However, we will not compromise on any wrongdoing involving our staff,' they said in a report on their news site. The portal said it would issue a statement once more information was available and would 'extend its fullest cooperation to the authorities.'
