1 2 Shillong: The district administrations of West Jaintia Hills and East Khasi Hills imposed a night curfew, along the India-Bangladesh border , on Thursday because of the current situation in the neighbouring country, which includes a likelihood of cross-border movement by 'unwanted elements' such as people, members of proscribed militant groups, smugglers, and other illegal activities. "Whereas, the bordering area in West Jaintia Hills district being unfenced is highly prone to infiltration by illegal migrants, members of organised crime having linkage to anti-national elements, including militant groups such that the anti-national elements, could gather in large numbers near the International Border during the night hours to continue their nefarious activities," an official order that such 'illegal, undesirable activities' should be prevented to maintain peace and tranquillity in the district, state and the country, West Jaintia Hills district magistrate Abhinav Kumar Singh announced the imposition of a curfew from 8pm to 6am extending up to 200 metres from the Zero Line (International Border).In a similar order, East Khasi Hills district magistrate RM Kurbah also said the bordering areas in the district being unfenced are highly prone to orders prohibit movement of people intending to cross the International Border with Bangladesh or sneak into the Indian territory, unauthorised processions or unlawful assembly of five or more persons, and carrying of arms or other instruments which can be used as weapons — including sticks and stones — in and around the India-Bangladesh border. The order also bans illegal, undesirable activities, smuggling of cattle or contraband goods, betel nut, betel leaves, dry fish, biri, cigarettes and tea view of the urgency of the matter, the order was passed ex-parte and came into force with immediate effect and until further orders. In her order, Kurbah specified that the night curfew would be effective in 1km radius of the International Border for two months from the other hand, the state govt has directed the deputy commissioners of Khasi and Jaintia Hills regions to immediately resolve the land issue for speeding up the completion of border fencing along the India-Bangladesh decision was taken at a meeting chaired by deputy CM in-charge home (police) Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday in presence of BSF Meghalaya inspector general and NBCC officials. Tynsong said due to the problem of land acquisition, about 33km-34km along the India-Bangladesh border in West Jaintia Hills is unfenced and around 7km-8km is unfenced in the East Khasi Hills district. "We have instructed that no person should illegally bring Bangladeshis into India until they have all necessary documents. That is the standing order and we continue to make sure it should not happen," he said.

SHILLONG: In two separate operations along the India-Bangladesh border , the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya Frontier intercepted and apprehended five Bangladeshi nationals attempting to cross into India illegally, officials said on Sunday. According to a press statement, on Saturday, as part of BSF Meghalaya 's ongoing efforts to curb illegal infiltration and other trans-border crimes, BSF troops, acting on specific intelligence, successfully intercepted and apprehended five individuals attempting to illegally cross the international border. In a special operation conducted by the troops of the 193rd Battalion, two Bangladeshi nationals, residents of Sunamganj District, were apprehended along the international border in the East Khasi Hills district. They revealed that they had crossed the border in search of job opportunities in India. Both individuals were handed over to PS Dangar for further legal action. In another operation, vigilant troops of the 50th Battalion detected suspicious movement along the border and promptly acted, leading to the apprehension of three Bangladeshi nationals resident of Pabna, Sherpur & Kishoreganj District. Further inquiry revealed that the trio had been working as tailors in a garment factory in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. They were handed over to the Mahendraganj Police Station in West Garo Hills for further legal proceedings. Earlier, the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya successfully intercepted and apprehended four Bangladeshi nationals, including one tout, attempting to infiltrate into Indian territory near the International Border in South Garo Hills, as per a statement. Acting on specific intelligence regarding illegal crossings in the region, troops from the 200th Battalion BSF swiftly alerted Baghmara MCP and launched an operation. During the operation, BSF personnel intercepted a Tata Winger vehicle suspected of facilitating the illegal crossing. Upon thorough inspection, four Bangladeshi nationals, including a tout, were apprehended, and the vehicle was seized.

Shillong: The Border Security Force , Meghalaya Frontier, on Thursday said it has achieved 'notable success' in its 'relentless efforts' to secure the India-Bangladesh border, enhancing security and combating cross-border crimes . "To ensure effective border management, BSF Meghalaya continued its close coordination with the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) through field Commander-level meetings to resolve border-related issues, enhance mutual trust, and raise concerns regarding infiltration, smuggling routes, and the movement of criminal elements," the BSF Meghalaya Frontier headquarters here said in a statement. "During the first quarter of this year, BSF troops apprehended several individuals involved in illegal cross-border activities, including 78 Bangladeshi nationals and 37 Indian nationals, for their involvement in smuggling and infiltration attempts," the statement said. The BSF said it was combating infiltration and smuggling networks, 'in spite many constraints' as vigilant BSF personnel successfully foiled multiple infiltration attempts and apprehended six touts involved in facilitating cross-border movements which further helped police and law enforcement agencies to take action. "During the period, BSF Meghalaya conducted numerous anti-smuggling operations, resulting in the seizure of contraband items and 750 cattle worth approximately Rs 11.70 crores...," the BSF said.

Shillong, Apr 24 (UNI) The Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya Frontier has marked a series of significant achievements in the first quarter of 2025, reinforcing its role in safeguarding the India-Bangladesh border and intensifying efforts against cross-border crimes, a BSF official said on Thursday. The BSF troopers thwarted numerous infiltration attempts and apprehended a total of 115 individuals involved in illegal cross-border activities — comprising 78 Bangladeshi nationals and 37 Indian nationals. In addition, six touts allegedly responsible for facilitating these illegal movements were also taken into custody, enabling coordinated follow-up actions by police and other enforcement agencies These arrests were made in connection with smuggling operations and unauthorised border crossings, the BSF official said, adding that preliminary interrogation of the apprehended individuals yielded crucial leads, which have been shared with state police and other agencies to support wider investigations. 'Details of smugglers and touts are being regularly communicated to sister agencies to disrupt the networks facilitating illegal activities across the India-Bangladesh border,' he added. In a strong crackdown on smuggling, BSF Meghalaya carried out a series of targeted operations, leading to the seizure of contraband and 750 cattle with an estimated value of Rs 11.70 crore. Items confiscated included Yaba tablets, cannabis (ganja), liquor, cosmetics, clothing, and various other goods intended for illegal transport into Bangladesh. To bolster cross-border coordination, BSF Meghalaya maintained active dialogue with the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) through regular field-level meetings. 'These engagements focused on enhancing mutual trust, addressing border-related challenges, and exchanging intelligence on infiltration routes and smuggling networks,' the BSF official said. The BSF Meghalaya reiterated its commitment to zero tolerance toward infiltration and smuggling, while continuing to strengthen border management and promote community development in frontier regions. Beyond its security mandate, BSF Meghalaya continued to demonstrate its commitment to the welfare of border communities. During the same period, the force organized 13 blood donation camps and 22 Civic Action Programs, offering free health checkups and distributing essential supplies in remote villages along the border.
