Edinburgh Monarchs sent packing by on-song Glasgow Tigers
Justin Sedgmen remains confident Monarchs will start to pick up wins. Picture: Jack Cupido The Edinburgh Monarchs have failed to qualify for the BSN Series semi-finals after a 50-40 defeat at the home of their arch-rivals the Glasgow Tigers. The Capital septet managed to register just a solitary win from four meetings in the Scottish group - last Friday's home success over the Berwick Bandits - and will finish bottom of the section. Glasgow will progress having won home and away against both the Monarchs and Bandits. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Swedish reserve Victor Palovaara continued his rich vein of form for the visitors at Ashfield with 16 from his seven outings that included four race wins. No.1 Justin Sedgmen provided backup with 11 but that's as good as it got for the Blue and Gold. Palovaara was the only Monarch to see the chequered flag all evening. Meanwhile, Tigers duo Chris Harris and Leon Flint went through the card unbeaten by an opposing rider. Attentions now switch to Friday's Championship opener when reigning league champions the Poole Pirates are the visitors to Armadale. "I think it was the worst meeting we've done but we were still going into heat 14 only two points behind," Sedgmen noted afterwards. "The track was good but when I was hitting the front I didn't know where to ride. So we're nearly there, it's just the track time. We need to get the boys riding, need to get them doing a lot of starts and laps. If you can get out in front then you can dictate where everyone needs to go. We just need to look forward and do things in an urgent way, take some risks."

Star man Victor Palovaara helps Edinburgh Monarchs shoot down Berwick Bandits
Victor Palovaara's whopping 19 points from seven rides helped secure the Edinburgh Monarchs their first home victory of the 2025 speedway season. The Capital side defeated the Berwick Bandits 46-43 in their third and penultimate BSN Series clash, but it's the visitors who pick up the additional bonus point following their win over the Monarchs 47-43 in the reverse fixture at Shielfield Park last weekend. Heat 15 gets underway at Armadale with Monarchs pair Victor Palovaara (red) and Justin Sedgmen (blue). Picture: Jack Cupido The Blue and Gold have already suffered two defeats on home shale so far, both coming against fiercest rivals the Glasgow Tigers in the Scottish Cup and BSN Series. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad But they came up trumps last night thanks to their faultless Swedish reserve, Palovaara taking a maximum seven rides and winning six of them. The 31-year-old was beaten just once by a opposition rider when he finished third behind Peter Kildemand in heat 13. He has certainly been a trump card for the Monarchs, but it won't be long before he switches into the main body of the team. Despite the victory, Monarchs will now have to win at Ashfield on Friday night and take the aggregate bonus point if they are to stand any chance of progressing to the semi-finals. However, a first home win of the season will be a real confidence booster having lost three heat-15 deciders in recent weeks. The Bandits are also no pushovers with a solid looking 1-7 and a side strongly tipped to make the end-of-season play-offs. Polish rider Oskar Polis has been a revelation since signing for the club in the winter with some strong performances, but the 28-year-old struggled to find any real speed. Justin Sedgmen took a nasty tumble in heat 13 but still chipped in with 10 while Kye Thomson also scored solidly with five, paid eight. The league campaign gets underway in just under a fortnight's time when reigning champions the Poole Pirates make the trip to West Lothian.

No final fling for Edinburgh Monarchs at Shielfield Park
It's becoming a familiar narrative for the Edinburgh Monarchs so far in 2025. Sign up to our daily newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Oskar Polis (yellow), Craig Cook (blue) and Peter Kildemand (red), are away from the tapes in heat 13. Picture: Jack Cupido The Monarchs were pipped to the post by old foes the Glasgow Tigers 46-44 in their BSN Series opener on Friday at Armadale. Fast forward 24 hours and this time it was the Berwick Bandits who were dishing the dirt in the final four laps at Shielfield Park on Saturday night. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad This was a makeshift Capital septet, however, with four guests used to cover the absent Victor Palovaara, Jonatan Grahn, Paco Castagna and Max James, the latter having recently announced he is taking time out of the sport. Meanwhile, the remaining trio were representing their countries at a European pairs event in Slovenia. Jye Etheridge slotted in at reserve and did a fine job scoring 12 from his six rides. On paper this looked like a routine home win, but Monarchs, led by Polish sensation Oskar Polis, proved a formidable force throughout, this in light of No.1 Justin Sedgmen forced to withdraw after his third race due to a hand injury. Ex-Monarch Craig Cook and team-mate Drew Kemp stormed to a heat 15 5-1 to ensure the points stayed in Northumberland but Monarchs put up more than a fight. Co-promoter Alex Harkess said afterwards: "If it wasn't for the fact that Justin Sedgmen was struggling badly with his injury on what is a demanding track, I'm sure we would have won this match. I felt we did extremely well in the circumstances."

Edinburgh Monarchs suffer final heat heartache as Glasgow strike again
The Edinburgh Monarchs were left licking their wounds as rivals Glasgow Tigers snatched a last-heat 5-1 to claim a 46-44 victory in their BSN Series opener. In a topsy turvy meeting the hosts led 43-41 after 14 races at Armadale, but rider of the night Dan Thompson, and team-mate Kyle Howarth, produced the goods when it mattered to earn a precious win on the road - Glasgow's second in six days after a 47-43 success at Berwick last weekend. The Tigers are now in pole position to progress to the semi-finals as group winners. For Monarchs they must now go and try to repeat that feat at Shielfield Park this evening if they are to keep their hopes of topping the group alive. However, they will have to do so without Swedish duo Victor Palovaara and Jonatan Grahn, not to mention skipper Paco Castagna, the trio all away representing their respective countries in the European Pairs Championship in Slovenia. Monarchs No.1 Justin Sedgmen leads heat 13. Picture: Jack Cupido This was the third meeting between the Scottish duo in as many weeks, and Glasgow's second win in West Lothian in 2025. Monarchs did pull off a stunning victory at Ashfield in the second leg of the Scottish Cup, but it was the Tigers who won on aggregate to take home the silverware. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad In truth last night was a match the Monarchs should not have lost, particularly when you take into account reserves Palovaara and guest Dayle Wood outscored their counterparts by a whopping 13-1. It was the main body of the team where the hosts were found wanting. Oskar Polis, who was making his home debut, chipped in with an impressive nine, with Castagna on eight that included two heat wins. "It was a very narrow loss and heat-15 loss is never nice, but I think the team showed there is good potential," Italian Castagna said afterwards. "We are a young team and they need laps but I think they showed what they can do. We win as a team and we lose as a team. We've already won at Glasgow so we'll see what happens. I changed the engine and I felt very good. There's a couple of things that need to be done but overall I have faith with what's coming."

Cheetahs recover to record win at Plymouth Coliseum
OXFORD Cheetahs recovered from being seven points down to record a 48-41 win thanks to a maximum from Sam Masters at Plymouth Gladiators in the BSN Series. Cheetahs dropped points with a number of early mishaps, including conceding a 5-0 in Heat after falls for Dan Gilkes and Jordan Jenkins. Cheetahs twice found themselves seven points down, at 15-8 after four races and 24-17 after Heat 7. Jonas Knudsen and Luke Killeen clawed back a 4-2 in Heat 8, while Gilkes won Heat 10 following two pointless outings, as he and Jenkins pegged back another 4-2. One moment of quality wins game & magnificent Matos: Key talking points Cheetahs took the lead for the first time in Heat 11 at 33-32, when Masters and Knudsen took their second 5-1 of the evening. Two races later, Cheetahs took further control with another 5-1 in Heat 13, this time from Masters and Cameron Heeps. Lasse Fredriksen and Joe Thompson attempted to pull Gladiators back into the contest in Heat 14, but Gilkes and Mitch McDiarmid both overtook Thompson on the opening lap and the race was shared. Cheetahs just needed a finisher in Heat 15 to secure victory, with Masters and Heeps taking a 4-2, as the former completed his full house, while Heeps collected 8+2. Knudsen (7+2) and McDiarmid (6+2) impressed on their first visit to the Plymouth Coliseum, and Knudsen was only denied a paid maximum by a fall in Heat 1 while on a 5-1 with Masters.
