Broadband Forum's New Spec Cracks the Code for Greater Control of Thread Connected Devices
Seamless communications of devices over Thread networks, improved management of Fixed Wireless Access, and support of Wi-Fi HaLow inside and outside the smart home FREMONT, Calif., May 29, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Broadband service providers (BSPs) now have more visibility and control of devices and applications connected over a Thread network thanks to the publication of an updated specification from Broadband Forum. The latest update to its TR-181 data model – Device:2.19 – is set to provide comprehensive support for managed smart home deployments using low-power mesh networking. Those BSPs that adopt the Broadband Forum data model can remotely communicate and manage the Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), such as modems, routers, or wireless access points, and diagnose problems with Thread connected devices. "Interoperability of devices is a hot topic in the smart home, and we recognize the importance of our role in bridging communications between all Thread connected devices," Broadband Forum CEO Craig Thomas said. "Alongside this, the updated specification promises improved management of diverse smart home technologies, such as Wi-Fi HaLow. We are excited to see the Connected User Work Area advance its mission to simplify the home broadband network." Another major enhancement is a revamped data model for cellular radio interfaces, built to support FWA use cases. This advancement aligns with Broadband Forum's Wireless Wireline Convergence work, enables broadband CPE to leverage cellular connectivity more effectively, and aligns with deployment models using Broadband Forum's USP/TR-369 protocol for management, telemetry, and automation. Device:2.19 also expands support for Wi-Fi Alliance's Data Elements Release 4, introducing standardized KPIs that improve monitoring and troubleshooting of Wi-Fi performance. The inclusion of Wi-Fi HaLow elements further extends coverage to long-range, low-power devices. "Device:2.19 reflects our commitment to evolving with network operator needs," said Jason Walls of QA Cafe, Co-Director of Broadband Forum's Connected User Work Area. "With support for next-generation smart home technology, Wi-Fi performance metrics, and Fixed Wireless Access, we're giving BSPs powerful tools to deliver exceptional broadband experiences." The TR-181 Device:2.19 data model continues to apply broadly across residential gateways, CPE, and other access devices, supporting flexible deployment and lifecycle management under a unified, standards-based framework. Calix Wi-Fi 7 Innovation Powers Managed Service Delivery Across Any Use Case—Giving Customers Greater Flexibility To Outpace Competitors
Calix launches the GigaSpire 7u6m and announces four more Wi-Fi 7 systems coming soon to its robust portfolio, enhancing the flexibility of the singular Calix Broadband Platform so customers can easily and quickly deliver advanced services to residential, small business, commercial, and MDU markets SAN JOSE, Calif., May 21, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) launched the GigaSpire® 7u6m mesh Wi-Fi 7 extender, expanding its industry-leading Unlimited Subscriber™ portfolio. The 7u6m joins top-performing Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 6/6E systems, giving broadband service providers (BSPs) greater flexibility to deliver advanced managed services that meet growing subscriber demands. Later this year, Calix will release four additional Wi-Fi 7 systems designed for residential, small business, commercial, and high-density multi-dwelling unit (MDU) environments. Each system integrates with the Calix Broadband Platform, enabling BSPs to mix and match solutions across their networks to grow revenue by delivering differentiated SmartLife™ experiences—like fully connected and immersive smart homes, low-latency connectivity for cloud-based business applications, and reliable managed Wi-Fi for tech-savvy MDU residents. Leveraging the complete Calix Platform—including Unlimited Subscriber, Intelligent Access™, and Calix Cloud®—BSPs of all sizes are transforming into broadband experience providers, competing on subscriber experience rather than speed and price alone. Every Wi-Fi 7 system from Calix is backward compatible, allowing seamless mixed deployments while protecting previous investments. Each system is Wi-Fi Alliance certified and integrates with Calix Cloud for rapid service activation, streamlined operations, and scalable growth. Optional XGS-PON ONT integration also ensures frictionless deployment and readiness for Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD)-funded expansion. Following today's launch of the 7u6m, Calix will add four additional Wi-Fi 7 systems to the Unlimited Subscriber portfolio later this year: GigaSpire 7u6: Expanded access to multigigabit services for homes and small businesses. The forthcoming 7u6 will give BSPs a cost-effective and easy path to extend Wi-Fi 7 into residential and business segments. Compact and powerful, it is ideal for homes, businesses, and apartments—elevating connected living with SmartHome™, boosting small business productivity with SmartBiz™, and delivering high-performance experiences for apartment dwellers through SmartMDU™. Its space-saving design fits neatly in structured wiring enclosures while effortlessly supporting streaming, video calls, voice services, and more. GigaSpire 7u10t.2 and 7u10txg.2: Optimized performance for gamers, streamers, and remote workers. The upcoming 7u10t.2 and 7u10txg.2 are performance and deployment-optimized next-generation Calix Wi-Fi 7 solutions. These systems are designed to strengthen the stickiness of SmartHome managed services with extreme performance for demanding home applications—from gaming to 4K/8K streaming and cloud computing. With full 10G fiber connectivity, BSPs can deliver ultra-responsive experiences for remote workers, content creators, and power users. These systems support Wi-Fi, voice, Ethernet, and more, so BSPs can meet the growing needs of connected homes and businesses with unmatched performance and reliability. GigaPro 7p6: Wired-like speeds via wireless connectivity for small businesses, commercial spaces, and MDUs. Launching later this year, the GigaPro® 7p6 will support high-density, low-latency connectivity. For BSPs deploying SmartMDU, the 7p6 can support shared amenities like security systems, tenant Wi-Fi, and back-office networks. Plus, BSPs can reduce wiring costs and simplify deployment using Power over Ethernet (PoE). For business environments like office buildings, warehouses, and manufacturing facilities, the 7p6 extends SmartBiz capabilities like cybersecurity and simplified network segmentation to power advanced digital displays, real-time automation, and more. Calix is dedicated to helping BSPs solve resource and talent gaps with comprehensive support and training. The award-winning Calix Success team provides hands-on guidance, workshops, onsite training, educational materials, and much more to ensure that BSPs can upskill their workforce and maximize the benefits of the Calix Platform.
