'Disrupts peace, harmony, and unity': Former Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa slams actor Kamal Haasan over Kannada language remark

NEW DELHI: Former Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa on Tuesday criticised actor on X over his remark that "Kannada is born from Tamil", and demanded an apology. B.S. Yediyurappa stated (translated), 'Kannada is truth, Kannada is eternal' is not just the rallying cry of Kannadigas, but also the pledge of Kannadigas towards Mother Bhuvaneshwari, the deity of Kannada. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Many senior linguistic experts have demonstrated that Kannada did not originate from any specific language. It is deeply regrettable and condemnable that artist Kamal Haasan, who is neither a historian nor a linguistic expert, has spoken insensitively about the Kannada language. His behavior, which unnecessarily disrupts peace, harmony, and unity, is not right. In the fervor of expressing his opinion, he has hurt the sentiments of crores of Kannadigas, and he must respectfully apologize to Kannada and Kannadigas. Apologizing does not make anyone smaller, nor does arrogance make anyone greater!' The Chennai-based producers of Thug Life, set to release on Thursday, had on Monday filed a petition before the Karnataka High Court challenging the ban imposed by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce. The petitioner sought a restraint order against KFCC and adequate security for the producers, cast, and others. KFCC had announced the ban on May 30 citing Haasan's remark that 'Kannada is born from Tamil'. Raajkamal Films International, the petitioner, argued the KFCC's action was based not on the film's content but on personal remarks by the actor. It also submitted that the film had been certified by the CBFC and the ban infringes upon Article 19(1)(g). KFCC president M Narasimhalu had said the film would not be allowed to screen unless Haasan apologised. He also said distributors were awaiting a conversation with the actor. Reports suggested the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce had reached out to Haasan to resolve the matter. Mandya MLA Ravikumar Ganiga on Monday said Ooty and Hosur, though currently in Tamil Nadu, were historically part of Karnataka and should be merged back. He criticised what he described as a pattern of disregard from Tamil Nadu toward Karnataka's interests.

BJP chargesheet against Karnataka govt is a bundle of lies: CM Siddaramaiah

MYSURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday tore into BJP and its chargesheet on the two-year-old Congress government alleging that development works have come to a standstill with the implementation of the five guarantees. The CM called it a bundle of lies and said BJP leaders BS Yediyurappa, R Ashoka and BY Vijayendra have made baseless charges. After launching projects worth Rs 513 crore at KR Nagar, he said, BJP and JDS leaders should visit the town to know whether the government has carried out development works or not. BJP should know that with the guarantee schemes, 50-60 lakh women use free buses every day and around 500 crore women have used the facility since its introduction two years ago, he said. Can a bankrupt government take up work worth Rs 513 crore, he asked. Accusing the previous BJP government of looting the state, he said it sanctioned projects worth Rs 2.70 lakh crore without allocating funds. Previous CM Basavaraj Bommai gave orders to carry out works worth Rs 1.66 lakh crore for which the Congress government had to pay, he claimed. The huge turnout of four lakh people at the rally in Hosapete marking two years of the Congress government is a testimony to good governance as people are happy with the guarantees, he said. Karnataka, now the second highest in GST collection, will be first in the next financial year, he said. Centre should take steps: Siddaramaiah on CovidOn the increasing number of Covid cases in several Asian countries like Singapore, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the Union Government should take immediate precautionary measures to protect the citizens.

Karnataka set to get its first marine sanctuary near Karwar

Bengaluru: Karnataka is set to get its first marine sanctuary in Uttara Kannada district, with a key committee of Karnataka State Board for Wildlife (SBWL), headed by forest minister Eshwar Khandre , greenlighting the proposal. Formally called Mugli-Apsarakonda Marine Sanctuary , the proposal now awaits the formal nod from the state cabinet. The sanctuary near Karwar will sit over 5,960 hectares, of which 835 hectares comprise the territorial waterbody of Arabian Sea, extending up to 6km from the shore, and another 835 hectares will be laterite plateau. Sources said the proposal has been pending before the state cabinet ever since it was approved by SBWL headed by then CM BS Yediyurappa. The proposal suffered delays due to Covid. In 2022, it was brought back to the front burner. This will be India's seventh marine sanctuary after the two in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and one each in Gujarat, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. The Karnataka sanctuary will have 5,400 hectares of mangrove forests, along with endangered species such as humpback whales, spot-tail sharks, olive-ridley turtles, and 80 species of sea birds. The 14 species of coral reefs found around Netrani Island, over 50 phytoplankton, and more than 100 zooplankton species, along with two species of sea grass and 100-plus species of seaweeds, will also be part of the sanctuary, according to forest department. Bhimgad villagers to be rehabilitated on May 17 The SBWL standing committee has resolved to complete the controversial rehabilitation of villagers from Talaiwadi village in Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary of Khanapur taluk in Belagavi district. This is the first non-tiger reserve rehabilitation project, which courted controversy over disparity in providing financial packages. While the state govt resolved to pay each of the 15 families Rs 15 lakh, villagers demanded more along with other facilities. Forest minister Eshwar Khandre had held a meeting with them in Dec 2024 and convinced the villagers to voluntarily relocate outside the forest. Officials said the villagers will be given cheques at a function in Bhimgad Sanctuary on May 17.

Karnataka, a step away from declaring its first marine sanctuary at Apsarakonda near Karwar

A draft estimation of the boundary of the Mugli-Apsarakonda Marine Sanctuary close to Honnavar, Karnataka. BENGALURU: Resolving hurdles for declaring Karnataka's first marine sanctuary, the standing committee of the State Board for Wildlife (SBWL), headed by Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre , on Wednesday gave its approval to declare ' Mugli-Apsarakonda Marine Sanctuary ' as Karnataka's first marine sanctuary. Deferred multiple times previously, the proposal now awaits the state cabinet nod to be formally notified as the state's first marine sanctuary. Deliberating on the long-pending proposal, the committee unanimously resolved to recommend the project for final approval by the state cabinet. 'The sanctuary will cover an area of 5,960 hectares, out of which 835.02 hectares comprise the territorial water body of the Arabian Sea extending up to 6 km from the shore, and another 835.302 hectares of laterite plateau will be part of the marine sanctuary,' explained a forest official who was part of the meeting. The proposal to declare the first marine sanctuary of Karnataka was pending before the state cabinet ever since it was approved by the Karnataka State Board for Wildlife (SBWL), headed by then CM BS Yediyurappa. He even announced in his budget speech an allocation of Rs 1 crore for setting up the marine sanctuary. However, the proposal was deferred due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Subsequently, in 2022, the official announcement was deferred yet again. However, the project finally gained momentum and was placed before the cabinet on Thursday. Once declared, this will be the seventh marine sanctuary of India after the two in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and one each in Gujarat, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. Out of the 5,960 hectares, the Mugli-Apsarakonda Marine Sanctuary will have 5,400 hectares of mangrove forests along with endangered species such as humpback whales, spot-tail sharks, olive-ridley turtles, and 80 species of sea birds. While the state government resolved to pay each of the 15 families Rs 15 lakh, villagers demanded more money along with other facilities. However, Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre held a midnight meeting with the villagers in December 2024 during the winter session of the legislature at Belagavi and convinced the villagers to voluntarily relocate outside the forest. Officials revealed that on May 17, the villagers will be handed over cheques at a function in Bhimgad Sanctuary.

Karnataka Government mulls renting floors in proposed twin towers in Majestic to private firms

BENGALURU: The high-rise twin towers due to come up in Majestic area to house government offices, could be shared with private companies, with the State government looking to rent out certain floors as a means to earn additional revenue. It has initiated the process to study the feasibility of construction and model to be adopted. At present, government offices are scattered across Bengaluru, including the Multi-Storeyed Building next to Vikasa Soudha, BMTC terminus in Shanthinagar, Kendriya Sadan in Koramangala, VV Towers and other places. When BS Yediyurappa was chief minister in 2020, it was proposed to accommodate all offices in one place, and the government zeroed in on an 8-acre land parcel next to Anand Rao Circle flyover to construct the twin towers. Though initially planned for 25 floors each, the plan was later increased to 59 floors as per Floor Area Ratio. But the cabinet has now given approval to opt for Transferable Development Rights (TDR). With this, the number of floors to be constructed will be more. 'We have written to the BBMP, seeking to know how many floors can be built on the available land. Once we get a reply, we will get a clear picture,' a senior PWD official told The New Indian Express. The State government has called for tenders from a consultant for a feasibility study and transaction advisory services. The transaction advisory will have a team of experts, including realtors. 'The experts will decide how to go about construction of the twin towers, whether to go for Private Public Partnership or whether the government can take a loan and bear the entire expense, or any other model that will benefit the government to reduce financial burden,'' sources said. The experts will also work out the feasibility of renting out certain floors to private firms, including IT companies, to yield income. 'We wanted to house all government offices here, without causing much financial burden,' said official sources. Pointing out that land availability is a major concern in Bengaluru, sources said, 'When we have over 8 acres of land in a prime location with bus, train and Metro connectivity, many would be interested. This is, however, in the initial stage,'' sources said. The State government also proposes to connect the twin towers with MS Building and other government offices.
