Bristol, TN K9 dies after medical emergency

BRISTOL, Tenn. (WJHL) — One of the Bristol Tennessee Police Department's (BTPD) K9s died in late April after a medical emergency. The BTPD stated in a news release that K9 Kai died on April 24. Kai, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois, was trained to detect explosives and help the BTPD find suspects. TDEC warns against eating catfish from Sullivan Co. reservoir According to the department, Kai became ill during his annual certification with partner Lt. Matt Cousins. BTPD Chief Matt Austin said Kai was a talented K9 who helped the department on numerous occasions. 'Kai's multi-faceted training, keen sense of smell, speed and intelligence made him a valuable asset for our department,' Austin said in the release. 'He was skilled at apprehending suspects and often was called to investigate suspicious items or search public venues to ensure a safe environment for others before the doors opened. He became a beloved member of the BTPD family during his distinguished career, and our thoughts remain with Lt. Cousins as he mourns the loss of his partner and friend.' Kai was born in Holland and came to the U.S. in 2017 for training in Ohio. The K9 joined the BTPD in January 2018. Over the course of his career in Bristol, Kai conducted 175 explosive searches, apprehended 21 suspects and completed almost 1,700 hours of training. He also assisted other federal, state and local agencies 57 times across the Tri-Cities region. The department will start the process to fill Kai's position in the near future. BRISTOL, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Bristol, Tennessee Police Department (BTPD) will host a Drug Take Back event on April 26 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Community members are asked to bring old, unwanted or expired medications to the drop-off site at the Bristol Tennessee Municipal Parking Lot (Courthouse Parking Lot, 801Anderson Street). Perscriptions, over-the-counter medications and supplements will be accepted at the 'no-questions-asked' event, the BTPD said in a news release. 'The Police Department is encouraging individuals to rid their households of unused medications that pose a safety hazard and can contribute to prescription drug abuse,' the BTPD said in the release. 'Additionally, proper disposal is much safer for the environment and the water supply, as flushing or throwing away medications puts waterways and aquatic life at risk.' BRISTOL, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Bristol Tennessee Police Department (BTPD) presented a Citizen Appreciation Award to Lukas Roberts on Tuesday night. Roberts received the distinction for exhibiting bravery in a perilous situation, the City of Bristol, Tennessee said in a social media post on Wednesday. Johnson City downtown 'last call' bill passed by TN General Assembly The award stems from an incident that occurred last summer when a disruptive individual entered Lukas' place of business and began threatening employees and customers. Lukas acted quickly, restraining the suspect until police arrived. Through this act of bravery, he protected his fellow employees and prevented further harm to a female customer who had been assaulted. The City of Bristol, Tennessee The post said that the BTPD commended Roberts for his 'remarkable courage, leadership and concern for the well-being of his community.'
