India's PV Sindhu bows out of Indonesia Open following her loss in pre-quarterfinals
Jakarta [Indonesia], June 6 (ANI): Ace Women's Indian shuttler PV Sindhu lost her pre-quarterfinals game and crashed out of the ongoing Indonesia Open 2025 badminton tournament on Thursday, as per the In keeping with the theme of the match, the opening game was a see-saw affair. Pornpawee Chochuwong led 11-10 at the mid-game break before extending her advantage to 16-10, only for Sindhu to fight back and make it level at 18-all. Pornpawee Chochuwong still earned the first game point of the match at 20-19, but Sindhu once again showed her resilience by saving it before going on to wrap up the opener herself. The second game was lop-sided as Pornpawee Chochuwong won it without much resistance from the Indian badminton player. The final game of the contest saw PV Sindhu lead 15-11, but she couldn't hold on against Chochuwong, who won the match in an hour and 18 minutes. Sindhu's ouster ended India's challenge in the singles section of the BWF Super 1000 tournament. In the men's doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty rallied from behind to beat the Danish duo of Rasmus Kjaer and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen 16-21, 21-18, 22-20. After dropping the first game, world No. 22 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty raised the bar in the second and they were neck-to-neck with the Danish pair at 14-14 before closing it with a flourish to force the decider. The deciding game saw both pairs give it their all as Satwik-Chirag saved a match point before coming away with a tense win in an hour and eight minutes. Meanwhile, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand lost their pre-quarterfinals match in straight games against Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto in the women's doubles. Even though the Indian badminton players put up a fight in the second game, they lost 21-13, 24-22 to the Japanese duo, bringing an end to India's challenge in the women's doubles. India's mixed doubles campaign also wrapped up after Sathish Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath were beaten 21-7, 21-12 by sixth seeds and world No. 6 Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand. Indonesia Open 2025: Satwik-Chirag duo enters quarterfinals, Sindhu exits in round of 16; Treesa-Gayatri pair bows out
Indian men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty came back from a game down to notch up a win on Thursday to enter the quarterfinals of the Indonesia Open. Satwik-Chirag beat Denmark's Rasmus Kjaer and Frederik Sogaard 16-21, 21-18, 22-20 in a match lasting one hour and eight minutes in the BWF Super 1000 tournament. In singles, P.V. Sindhu bowed out after losing to Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong in the Round of 16. Sindhu started brightly and recovered from 10-16 down to take the opening game. However, Chochuwong responded emphatically in the second, surging to a 10-point lead before closing it out 21-10. The decider remained neck and neck for the most part, but Chochuwong pulled away in the final stretch to seal the match 21-18. The women's doubles duo Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand lost 13-21, 22-24 to Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto of Japan in the round of 16 stage. In mixed doubles, Sathish Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath exited after a straight-game loss against Thailand's Dechapol Puavarankuroh and Supissara Paewsampran. The scoreline read 21-7, 21-12 in favour of the Thai shuttlers, who wrapped up the match in just 25 minutes.

They will now be joined by the mixed doubles pair of Sathish Kumar Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath, who recovered from defeat in the first game before winning the next two for a 15-21, 21-16, 21-17 in 45 minutes on Court 3. However, two other Indian mixed doubles pairs went down in contrasting fashion. Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto took second seeds Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei of Malaysia to three games before losing 11-21,21-16, 14-21 in 59 minutes. Fellow Indians, Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh went down tamely 15-21, 9-21 to Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch of Denmark in a Round of 32 match. Another mixed doubles pair, Rohan Kapoor and Gadde Ruthvika Shivani went down to the Japanese duo Yuichi Shimogami and Sayaka Hobara 11-21, 9-21 in 33 minutes. In men's singles, World No 37, Kiran George was sent packing by former World Champion Loh Kean Yew 20-22, 9-21. India still has some interest intact in the event as PV Sindhu will be meeting fifth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand in a Round of 16 match on Thursday.

Indonesia Open 2025: Sindhu triumphs in three-game thriller; Lakshya Sen exits in first round
Two-time Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu emerged victorious in a three-game thriller against Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in the Round of 32 at the Indonesia Open on Tuesday, while Lakshya Sen suffered a first-round exit. Sindhu won 22-20, 21-23, 21-15 in a gruelling contest that lasted one hour and 19 minutes. After taking the opening game, the Indian appeared poised to close out the match in straight games, but Okuhara fought back to force a decider. Sindhu maintained a steady lead for most of the third game, keeping enough distance between herself and Okuhara to secure a place in the second round of the BWF Super 1000 event. In the men's singles, Lakshya endured his fifth first-round exit of the season, going down 11-21, 22-20, 15-21 to China's Shi Yu Qi. Among other results, Anupama Upadhyaya bowed out following a straight-games defeat to South Korea's Kim Ga Eun. Later in the day, HS Prannoy and the men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will be in action.

BAI injects bigger finance to boost badminton
Keeping in tune with the fast growth of the sport across the country, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) has sanctioned bigger financial incentives to boost the game. In its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the capital, the BAI approved the enhancement of prize money for National championships from Rs. 75 lakh to Rs. 1 crore. The under-19 Nationals will have Rs. 70 lakh prize purse, from the current Rs. 35 lakh. The under-15 and 17 National championships will have Rs. 75 lakh prize, while the under-13 and under-11 Nationals will offer Rs. 30 lakh and Rs. 7 lakh respectively. The veterans also have a lot to cheer, as the Nationals will offer a Rs. 38 lakh prize money. The BAI will offer all the prize money of the National championships as a grant to the host. Quite impressively, the prize money for National ranking tournaments has been doubled to Rs. 10 lakh for under-19 tournaments, Rs. 8 lakh for under-15 and 17 tournaments and Rs. 6 lakh for under-13. 'We are providing grants to State Associations to ensure development across the State, and the current increase in grants will help them enhance their existing programs,' said the president of BAI, Himanta Biswas Sarma. He acknowledged the point that looking after the youngsters and motivating them by providing better financial incentives was critical for the development of the game. Rewarding excellence For excellence, the BAI has allocated further funds. A player or pair winning the World Championship gold will get a cash prize of Rs. 20 lakh. A player or pair winning the BWF Super 1000 title will get Rs. 10 lakh. A player winning the World junior Championship will get Rs. 15 lakh and it will be Rs. 10 lakh for clinching the Asian junior championship. To ensure former players get into coaching to accelerate the growth of young players, the BAI has announced a monthly award of Rs. 1 lakh to Olympian coaches, and Rs. 50,000 to other coaches training the national campers. The grant for State Associations has been increased from Rs. 7.5 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh. That apart, they will also get additional grants for hosting National ranking tournaments. Overall, the BAI has pledged about Rs. 10 crore annually to strengthen the game across the country, right from the grass roots level.
