Pedestrian killed after being hit by two vehicles in Sandakan
Published on: Saturday, May 31, 2025 Published on: Sat, May 31, 2025 By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: SANDAKAN: A 50-year-old local woman died after being hit by two vehicles in an accident around 10.50 pm on Friday at Batu 4, Jalan Utara. Sandakan acting police chief Supt. Ramasamy Kuppan said initial investigations revealed that the first vehicle, a BYD Dolphin, was heading from IJM to Taman Tinosan in rainy and dark conditions when the pedestrian suddenly crossed and stood on the road. The driver, unable to brake in time, hit the victim, who was then thrown onto the path of an oncoming Naza Citra, which ran over her due to the close distance. The woman was taken to Duchess of Kent Hospital but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment in the emergency zone. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 2024 BYD Dolphin Premium Long Term
The BYD Dolphin is the brand's most affordable machine, an all-electric hatch starting at $39,990 for the Essential. That's $10k cheaper than when it first arrived here. The choice for buyers is whether to go for the Essential value, or pay extra for the $48,990 Premium. This more potent model has recently joined the NZ Autocar line-up, resplendent in its striking pink livery. The difference between variants is more than just specification. Essential comes with a 70kW/180Nm motor but the Premium has double the power, with 150kW and 310Nm of torque. That means 0–100km/h drops from a sedate 12.3sec to a brisk seven seconds in the Premium. Read more 2023 BYD Dolphin Extended review Of more relevance perhaps is the extra range you get with the Premium. The Essential offers a respectable WLTP driving range of 340km from its 44.9kWh Blade battery. Step up to the Premium, and you'll get a larger 60.48kWh battery offering 427km. DC fast charging also improves: the Essential supports up to 60kW, while the Premium can hook up to 80kW chargers. Both models are well specified with BYD's rotating 12.8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a full suite of driver assistance systems and V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality. The Premium adds extras like heated front seats, wireless phone charging and a panoramic glass roof. There's also a suspension upgrade. Where the Essential uses a torsion beam set-up in the rear, the Premium switches to a multi-link arrangement for improved ride and handling. Upping the spend to the Premium seems justified in our eyes, given you get more than just a few extra creature comforts. The added power, range and dynamic boost are good value for the money. Our GM, Gavin Shaw, has been enjoying the Dolphin for the past month. With his weekly mileage amounting to around 350km, he is getting by with one fast charge a week. He says this takes around 40mins, and it is easy to monitor the process if you are not in the vehicle by using the app. After being an EV skeptic for many years, he has enjoyed the refinement of the power delivery and the ample power of the Premium. Equally impressive for him are the open road dynamics with controlled body roll in bends and a good ride on the highway. His only real bugbear with the Dolphin is the thick A pillar restricting outward vision at some intersections, especially when turning right. While not a fan of the colour combination, he is getting used to the constant comments questioning his supposed lifestyle choice. He says women love the colour combination however. After having spent the past few months being electrically motivated (he was in the Atto 3 prior to this) his view on EVs has changed somewhat. He says he has been pleasantly surprised, particularly as a die-hard enthusiast of petrol power. He reckons that anyone who is hesitant about the idea of an EV should experience one for more than just a quick drive around the block. He reckons the benefits, including the relative ease of refuelling at home, can only be realised with an extended test drive. BYD to expand Hungarian operations with new Budapest HQ
Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said: 'Our goal is for foreign investors to bring development capacities to Hungary. Not only manufacturing but also development capacities. Our idea has always been that the factories arrive first, then the factories' development centres arrive and then the research centres arrive. 'It doesn't work the other way around. First production, then development and then research. That is why today's [Friday] meeting and agreement are of great importance, because now BYD is opening a new era — the company is also bringing its development centre to Hungary.' The company recently launched the new BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid bakkie and Sealion 6 and 7 SUVs in South Africa. The company also sells the BYD Dolphin and Seal models, the former launched locally in 2024 as the cheapest EV on sale in South Africa with a starting price of R539,000. BYD has also been supplying commuter busses to the City of Cape Town for many years.

Hyundai's new ‘Insteroid' concept set to bring racing game styling
Hyundai has teased us with a few images of its new concept car with the Insteroid. The Insteroid will be based on the firm's new Inster compact EV, which rivals the Fiat 500e and BYD Dolphin. The manufacturer claims that the Insteroid's design has 'racing game-inspired' styling with 21-inch wheels, a large rear roof spoiler and lower diffuser, as well as air vents featured in the wheel arches. Also, the car utilises the same 'Pixel' LED light designs as in the Inster production car as well as featuring circular rear LED tail lights. Images of the car's interior are yet to be revealed at this stage, however the car could receive a similar cabin to the regular Inster with a high driving position, wood-effect trim, physical climate control buttons and flat-folding front and rear seats. Also, thanks to a boxy design, the Insteroid should provide plenty of space for occupants. Details of the car's powertrain have not been revealed yet, but the standard Inster comes with either a 42kWh or a 49kWh battery pack that gives a claimed range of up to 369 km on a single charge. It's likely that the Insteriod will adopt the standard car's larger battery pack and will have a boost in power. The car's name is a combination of 'Inster' and 'Steroid', which the manufacturer claims the car reflects the 'funky, youthful and muscular' nature built up from the regular car. The Insteroid will be unveiled to the public next month, however, it's uncertain at this stage whether the car will go into production.
