Delivering justice to last citizen of country is our fundamental duty: CJI Gavai
Prayagraj, May 31 (UNI) Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai on Saturday said that whether it is the judiciary or the executive, it is our fundamental duty to deliver justice to the last citizen of the country. On the occasion of the inauguration of the newly constructed chambers and multi-level parking building of Allahabad High Court, the CJI said that in the 75 years of the Constitution, the judiciary and the executive have made many such laws, which have contributed greatly to bringing social and economic equality in India. "Land has been taken from the landlords and given to the people. Farmers were made the owners of the land. There are many such laws, under which the working class and labour class of the country were empowered," he said. On this occasion, he thanked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for providing funds for such a big facility for the lawyers. He said that this building is being inaugurated today on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar, who worked in India with a sense of social justice, and is a matter of pride for us. The CJI said that when Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar presented the final draft of the Constitution of India before the Constitutional Assembly on November 25, 1949, the speech he gave was a direction-giving one for our country. "At that time, he had warned that unless we remove social and economic inequality, democracy will not be able to be established in this country in the true sense. Today we see that in our 75-year journey, our executive and judiciary have made a big contribution to bringing social and economic equality along with equality in India," he said. He said that as the CM also said that our Constitution has strongly taken the country forward towards progress in the period of 75 years. "When the Constitution was being made, it was said that it is too federal. Then Baba Saheb had replied that this is such a Constitution which will keep India united and strong in both normal and emergency situations," he said. He said, "Today we see what the situation is in our neighbouring countries and India today, after 75 years, is not only progressing, but whenever the country faces a crisis, it has remained strong and united. If the credit for this should be given to anyone, it should be given to the Indian Constitution." The CJI said, "I am happy that after becoming the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, I have got the opportunity to speak on the holy land of Prayagraj in the first official programme itself. We have had a very close relationship with Prayagraj. Just now on the stage, Meghwal ji said that Yogi ji is the most powerful and hardworking CM of this country. I would like to say that the land of Allahabad belongs to powerful people." He said that the land of Prayagraj has a very dignified contribution in the history of UP. "The name of this land is written in golden letters in the legal field. Before independence, Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru, Tej Bahadur Sapru and many such legal scholars are named among the few best lawyers of the country," he said. He said, "Similarly, in the Hindi literature of India, many scholars of Prayagraj like Mahadevi Verma, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Sumitranandan Pant, Suryakant Tripathi Nirala, Subhadra Kumari Chauhan have made a significant contribution. The entire country also respects the sacrifice of Chandrashekhar Azad in the history of India's independence." The CJI said, "Today, by inaugurating this grand building, we are dedicating it to the citizens of the country. I would like to congratulate the Allahabad High Court, its Chief Justice, all the Justice brothers and sisters and all the members of the Bar Association of Allahabad High Court that you have got such a grand building that will make the Bar Association of the entire country jealous. I keep roaming a lot in the country, have also gone abroad a lot, but I have not seen such a big building and so many facilities for advocates anywhere in the world," he said. He said, "For this, I would like to thank the CM for giving such a huge amount of funds. Not only this, with the efforts of the CM, work is also being done on judicial buildings in all the districts. In this, all the facilities will be provided to the judges as well as the parties, litigants and lawyers." Justice Gavai said that the government and the High Court have taken care not only of the judges and the lawyers but also of the litigants. "We have been told that a big construction will be done on the adjacent plot and great facilities will be provided to the litigants who come there. There will be special facilities for all, including the disabled and women. All these things show that we work not only for the lawyers or the judges but also for the citizens of the country, who come to the judiciary in the hope of justice," he said. He said, "I especially want to mention the judges of the High Court who sacrificed their bungalows for this building. This is a unique example between the bar and the bench. Unless the bar and the bench work together, the chariot of justice cannot move forward." UNI AB GNK

BJP slams Cong for bid to take credit for caste census
Patna: BJP state president Dilip Jaiswal on Monday criticised the Congress for attempting to take credit for the caste-based census recently announced by the Narendra Modi-led central govt. "Credit goes to the one who actually delivers," Jaiswal said in Kishanganj, questioning why the Congress failed to conduct a caste census during its six decades in power. The Union cabinet's political affairs committee last week approved the inclusion of caste data in the delayed national census, which has been pending for four years. Since the announcement, political parties across the spectrum have been vying for credit. "Those (Congress and RJD) who are talking about caste census or reservation in the private sector today could not implement it during their rule. Why?" Ambedkar poster: UP SC/ST panel orders FIR against SP
Lucknow: A day after the Uttar Pradesh Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission took suo motu cognizance of a controversial poster by the Samajwadi Party's Lohia Vahini in which a photograph of BR Ambedkar was used with the face half superimposed with the face of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, the panel on Thursday ordered the Lucknow Police Commissioner to register an FIR under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The commission called it a "grave insult" to the Dalit icon. Commission chairman Baijnath Rawat strongly condemned the act, saying: "This is not just an insult to Baba Saheb, but a direct attack on the faith of the SC/ST communities. The society will not tolerate it." He further alleged that the SP has a history of insulting Dalit icons and glorifying anti-national elements. Rawat asked for a compliance report to be submitted to the commission by May 5. "Whether in power or in opposition, the SP repeatedly disrespected the Dalit community. Akhilesh Yadav's attempt to equate himself with Baba Saheb reflects a deeply flawed mindset," he said. The commission also demanded a public apology from the SP, calling the act a "deliberate and shameful" attempt to distort history and hurt Dalit sentiments.

Bihar election: Eye on votes, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal takes part in Dalit Mahapanchayat
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Bihar Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president Dilip Jaiswal along with Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary jointly attacked Congress party alleging that party did not do anything for the upliftment of the Dalits. They all had gathered to address people during 'Dalit Mahapanchayat' organised by 'Bihar Ravidas Vikas Sangh Parivar' at Miller High School ground in Patna on Sunday (April 27, 2025) to honour Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. Mr. Meghwal said that the Constitution given by Baba Saheb Ambedkar gave equality, freedom and brotherhood. Referring to sandalwood, he said that no matter how you look at sandalwood, its fragrance remains the same. 'Man should also be like that and there should be no difference between man's words and actions. Baba Saheb used to say that there is a difference between the words and actions of Congress leaders. He never used to like the Congress leaders,' Mr. Megwal said. He also accused the Congress of conspiring against Baba Saheb. He said that 'Baba Saheb is immortal'. With an eye on Dalit votes, all the leaders, including Health Minister Mangal Pandey paid floral tribute to Baba Saheb's picture and bowed in front of him. Praising the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, Mr. Jaiswal said that it is continuously working for the upliftment of the Dalit community. He stressed that the Congress ruled the country for 65 years, but it kept the poor people poor only. 'Congress party did not try to take the poor forward despite coming to power with the slogan of Garibi Hatao (remove poverty). The poor people were never their priority,' Mr. Jaiswal alleged. He also accused the Congress party for misleading the country. He alleged that Baba Saheb was never respected by Congress and the grand old party always humiliated him which the country has not forgotten. 'Everyone knows when Baba Saheb died, even two yards of land was not made available in Delhi for his last rites, not only this, fare was charged from his wife for carrying the body. Today the same Congress is shedding crocodile tears in his name,' Mr. Jaiswal said. He claimed that Congress party did not even provide land for building Baba Saheb's memorial, however when Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, Baba Saheb's memorial was built in Delhi and the NDA government honoured him with Bharat Ratna. Mr. Choudhary while addressing the Dalit Mahapanchayat echoed the same claiming only the NDA government is uplifting the Dalit society by following the footsteps of Baba Saheb. 'When the NDA government was formed in Bihar, then the work of giving reservation in the Gram Panchayat elections was done. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had written a letter to all the Chief Ministers protesting against the reservation. Whenever reservation was opposed, it was done by the Congress party,' Mr. Choudhary alleged. He asserted that BJP led NDA talks about Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas and India are moving forward under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Listing out the achievements of the State government, Mr. Choudhary said that the work is being done to change Bihar under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. 'The central and state governments are working together for the welfare of Dalits. Schemes are being implemented continuously for the development of the poor in Bihar. People are getting direct benefits of these schemes,' Mr. Choudhary said. The Deputy Chief Minister also stressed that following the footsteps of Baba Saheb, the double engine government of Mr. Modi and Mr. Kumar is implementing 22 types of schemes for the upliftment of Dalits and 80% of the families in Dalit settlements have got Ayushman cards. Mr. Chaudhary said that in this year's budget, the scholarship of Dalit students has been increased from ₹1000 to ₹2000 per month and a decision has been taken to build Savitribai Phule hostels in all 38 districts.
