Prateik Smita Patil reveals a custody battle between Raj Babbar and Smita's family followed his birth: ‘Kaun maa, kaun baap'

Smita Patil and Raj Babbar's son Prateik has changed his last name a few time since the last decade or so but now, he has chosen to go with Prateik Smita Patil, in the honour of his late mother. In a recent interview, Prateik shared that soon after his birth, when his mother passed away, there was a custody battle for him, and even after his mother's side got his custody, there were discussions about Prateik's last name, which at that time, was decided to be Babbar. In a video shared on Varinder Chawla's YouTube channel, Prateik shared that a custody battle ensued after his birth, and there was a controversy around his last name. 'I was born Prateik. There was a custody battle for me from my mom's side of the family and my father's side of the family. My mom's side won. There was still a battle for the surname. Finally, in the passport, it was 'Prateik Smit Babbar'. It wasn't even Smita, so growing up I was 'Prateik Smit Babbar'. In school, everyone thought I was Christian because they would wonder 'why Smit?', no one cared for Babbar. Everyone just called me Smit,' he said. Prateik said that in his first film, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, he was credited as 'Prateik Babbar' but subsequently, he went with just 'Prateik' for a few years. 'In my first film, my name was Prateik Babbar and then the devil got the better of me and I started thinking 'Kaun hai maa? Kaun hai baap? (Who is mom? Who is dad?)' Then I started thinking, 'I don't want to be Patil, I don't want to be Babbar. I want to be just Prateik.' For a few films, I was only Prateik because I was bitter about my parents. I was like, I don't want to belong to them. They have only given me trauma my entire life. I don't want to belong to them and then I continued with Prateik,' he said. 'I had to embrace that name, it makes me complete. Now, I am complete, I feel complete. Priya said 'Prateik, you owe it to her, she gave her life for you, you owe that, you are her son' and that hit different. I was like 'this is who I have to be',' he said.

FIIT JEE CFO detained at Delhi Airport after return from Doha last week, questioned

FIITJEE's Chief Financial Officer, Rajeev Babbar, was detained last week at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) and questioned by the Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) after he landed in the Capital from Doha, Qatar, said sources. The action came days after an FIR was registered against the coaching centre chain with pan-India presence over allegedly abruptly shutting down multiple centres amid a financial crisis and non-payment of salaries to staff. The Delhi Police had issued a look-out circular against the CFO as he was named in the FIR. He was stopped at the airport soon after he landed, as per officials. 'The airport officials informed the EOW about his detention, and a team rushed to the airport. A team of EOW officials took him into their custody and questioned him about the case. He was asked about the transaction details with the managing partners of the FIITJEE,' a source said. 'But later, he was allowed to go. He was told he might be asked to come again,' he added. Babbar has been asked not to leave the country till the probe is underway, the source added. On March 12, the EOW registered a cheating case against FIITJEE after receiving 192 complaints from parents of students who studied at its Preet Vihar centre in East Delhi. The centre had shut down in January. Later, fresh complaints were received from parents of students enrolled at the Kalu Sarai centre in South Delhi. These complaints were also added to the same FIR, an officer said. The Kalu Sarai centre is among the prominent ones of the chain. According to another source, the EOW often issues LOCs (look out circulars) against the persons named in the FIRs of cases registered by the unit so that they cannot go out of the country till the probe is underway. 'In this case too, the LOC was issued and as soon as Babbar landed in Delhi, he was stopped by the airport officials at the IGIA and the EOW was informed,' the source said, adding, Babbar may be called for questioning again in the future. The source added further probe into the case is underway, and Managing Director DK Goel, who is also named in the FIR, may also be called for questioning soon. The FIR was registered under sections 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), and 120B (punishment for criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the EOW police station, as the complaints had started coming in since 2022. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the new criminal code of India, came into effect on July 1, 2024, replacing the IPC. The EOW started a probe after it received around 35 complaints in February, which has now gone up to over 200, said police. These complaints were initially filed with the local police in East Delhi and South Delhi and later forwarded to the EOW, as the amount was suspected to be large and needed a thorough investigation. In a statement earlier, FIITJEE had said the 'present turmoil is temporary'. 'Company officials are working to resume operations at all places within a reasonable time,' it added. It had also blamed managing partners for the financial crisis that led to the closure of several centres. Alleging a conspiracy, it had also claimed that it had 'not closed any centre as part of its own decision' On Thursday, multiple teams of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at the premises of FIITJEE in Delhi-NCR, as part of its money laundering investigation against the coaching institute.
