Michelle Bachelet Closes Door to Third Run for Chile Presidency

(Bloomberg) -- Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said she won't run for head of state in this year's election, resisting pressure for her to represent the center-left in a field that's dominated by opposition contenders. There needs to be unity among progressive politicians, said Bachelet, who was Chile's first-ever female head of state in 2006-2010 and then governed again in 2014-2018. 'From the bottom of my heart, I thank everyone for the affection, support and confidence that so many fellow citizens have showed me,' Bachelet wrote. 'I will enthusiastically support whoever is ultimately selected to represent our sector in the November elections.' Bachelet, a member of the Socialist Party, has remained well-liked among voters who admire her combination of experience, empathy, and emphasis on social justice. A recent poll showed her placing second for the November presidential election with backing from over 15% of respondents, support that may now transfer to former Interior Minister Carolina Toha, who announced her candidacy for the center-left on March 4. While Bachelet had previously said she wouldn't run again, her enduring popularity and recent silence revived calls that she reconsider. In her second term, she included the communists in the ruling coalition that had governed Chile for most of the period since the return of democracy in 1990. A Pulso Ciudadano survey published on Sunday showed conservative candidate Evelyn Matthei leading the race for head of state with support from 24.3% of voters, followed by Bachelet with 15.9%. Hard-right contenders Jose Antonio Kast and Johannes Kaiser garnered 10.6% and 9.7%, respectively. Toha polled just 1.9%. The first round vote will be on Nov. 16 and a run-off, if needed, would take place on Dec. 14. Local laws forbid consecutive terms for any head of state, meaning that current President Gabriel Boric will not be able to seek reelection.
