Jessica Pegula makes admission after stunning 1st-round loss
The post Jessica Pegula makes admission after stunning 1st-round loss appeared first on ClutchPoints. World No. 3 Jessica Pegula made a striking admission after a stunning 1st-round loss to an unranked Italian player at Wimbledon. The three-time Masters 1000 winner was coming into the All England Lawn Tennis Club looking to build off a productive grass-court season. Pegula was coming off a win at the Bad Homburg Open, with encouraging victories over top-10 players Iga Swiatek and Emma Navarro. Elisabetta Cocciaretto, however, had other plays, dominating this clash to win 6-2 6-3. The 24-year-old made it to the 3rd round of Wimbledon in 2023 and looked as comfortable as ever on Court 2, hitting 17 winners. Pegula, on the other hand, hits just five winners while recording 24 unforced errors on the evening. The American, in particular, struggled on her second serve, winning just 42% of the points on it. In the post-match interview, Pegula was brutally honest about her disappointment over the result, while giving major credit to Cocciaretto. 'She played absolutely incredible tennis. She just was hitting her shots and going for it, serving big, serving high percentage, going big second serves, redirecting the ball. It was just her day, I honestly think…It was terrible (on her serve). It's so frustrating when something you've been working on so much doesn't come and help you when you want it to, especially on grass…It's really a bummer to lose. I'm upset that I wasn't able to turn anything around. But at the same time, I do feel like she played kind of insane. Kudos to her.' Pegula is still the No. 3 player in the world by a fair margin and will probably stay in that spot heading into the summer hard-court season. The pressure will be on during this stretch, particularly as the US Open looms. Jessica made it to her first major final at her home slam in 2024, where she eventually fell in a tight straight-set affair to Aryna Sabalenka. Overall, Wimbledon has seen its share of upsets on both the men's and women's sides so far. Coco Gauff also fell in the 1st round on Tuesday, and several top 10 men's players are already out. There are still plenty of quality Americans in the draw, with Madison Keys probably being the best bet for the women. Emma Navarro also won her opening round clash and can make a deep run on the grass. But it was an overall disappointing day for the United States, with their top 2 seeds now out. Lions can roar to clean sweep over Australia
What a match, what a victory, what a Saturday morning celebration after the British & Irish Lions stormed to a sensational series win over Australia by taking the second Test with a seismic late try. The Melbourne Cricket Ground has hosted many memorable Ashes moments throughout the ages with arguably the greatest being the 1982 fourth Test with just a single boundary required for the Baggy Green to regain the famous urn when Jeff Thomson edged an Ian Botham delivery to Chris Tavare at second slip. The hosts' hearts skipped several beats as he fumbled the ball only for Geoff Miller to snaffle it before it could hit the ground and England were triumphant. This time the last-gasp heroics were supplied by Lions full-back Hugo Keenan who bulldozed his way over the line to give the tourists a stunning 29-26 victory in front of record crowd of more than 92,000 fans. The drama didn't end there, however, as rugby's equivalent of VAR was called into action, although this didn't take six minutes or longer to be decided and the nail-biting fightback from 23-5 down was confirmed. The first Test in Brisbane wasn't quite so gut-churning with the tourists winning 27-19 but it wasn't really as comfortable as the final score suggests with the Lions dominating the first half and the hosts causing all manner of problems as they regrouped after trailing 17-5 at the interval. The series may be decided but the third Test in Sydney will be just as gripping, with no quarter given. Australia will be firing on all cylinders as they seek to a modicum of pride and redemption by winning the final Test while the Lions have stated from the start that they want to return to the northern hemisphere with a 3-0 whitewash tucked under their belts. It's safe to assume Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt will field the strongest possible line-up and it would be a surprise if his opposite number Andy Farrell didn't do the same with the Lions chasing a perfect 9-0 success rate on the tour and the first Test clean sweep in Australia since 1927. Can they do it? The character and physical and mental fortitude displayed as they registered the biggest comeback in Lions history more than suggests they can and bookmakers agree, with bet365 posting the best odds on another victory at just 1/3. The better wager to place before another early Saturday morning pint at your rugby club or in the pub is 4/6 with BoyleSports that the Lions win by more than six points. Mirra Andreeva played some delightful tennis as she reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon before losing in straight sets via two tie-breaks to Belinda Bencic and she also advanced to the last eight at the Bad Homburg Open after battling through to the last four on the clay at the French Open, Italian Open and in Madrid. The 18-year-old Russian won the women's title at Indian Wells in March and is terrific each-way material for this week's Canadian Open in Montreal at 9/1 with William Hill and bet365. More Trending Taylor Fritz is the second seed in the men's draw and has the benefit of being in the fourth quarter of the draw over in Toronto where he dodges most of the big guns in action such as Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune and the promising Joao Fonseca. The American will potentially have to face either Andrey Rublev or Miami Open champion Jakob Mensik in the last eight but should be going at full pelt by then and is 6/1 with bet365 to take the title. It has taken Iga Swiatek a long time to figure out the grass at Wimbledon, but it looks as if she's finally done it. The native of Poland had never made it beyond the quarterfinals in her first five trips to the All England Club, leaving many to wonder if she'd be another elite player who just could never make sense of the unique conditions at Wimbledon. This year has been different. Not only has Swiatek been dominant at Wimbledon – she's dropped just one set during the tournament – but she also was terrific at the Bad Homburg Open, a warm-up event played on grass. Swiatek vs. Bencic odds, preview Player Odds Iga Swiatek -334 Belinda Bencic +250 Odds via bet365 Swiatek made it to the finals at Bad Homburg, where she lost to Jessica Pegula, but she defeated three difficult opponents in straight sets before falling to the American in the showpiece. Bencic was able to outlast Mirra Andreeva in two tiebreakers in the quarterfinals, but the Russian only broke serve once in that match, which is not a luxury Bencic will be able to rely on against Swiatek, who is one of the best defensive players in the sport. Belinda Bencic gets ready to serve at Wimbledon. Getty Images At her best, Swiatek is a master at getting balls back in play and grinding out long points, forcing her opponents into mistakes. That strategy isn't easy to pull off on the grass, which usually favors speed and power, but the Warsaw native has figured out how to make it work this year. Bencic will need to be at her best to get a foothold in this match, but there's every chance that Swiatek doesn't even allow her that opportunity. Swiatek's grass-court form is too hard to ignore, and there's a good chance that this one is over quickly. The Play: Swiatek -1.5 sets (-120, bet365)

American Jessica Pegula Bids Farewell to Wimbledon in Stunning Upset
London – SABA: In a major shock at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the year, world No. 3 Jessica Pegula of the United States was knocked out in the first round on Tuesday by Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto, ranked 116th in the world. The Italian player needed just 57 minutes to secure a straight-sets victory (6-2, 6-3) over her American opponent, marking her first win against Pegula in their second career meeting. This loss comes as a huge blow for Pegula, who had high hopes for a deep run at Wimbledon. Her participation followed just two days after winning the Bad Homburg Open in Germany, where she defeated Poland's Iga Świątek in the final. The 2023 US Open runner-up has had a disappointing performance in Grand Slams this year, having previously exited in the third round of the Australian Open against Serbia's Olga Danilović and the round of 16 at Roland Garros at the hands of world No. 361 French player Lois Boisson. Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Italian, Cocciaretto, has never advanced past the third round at Wimbledon. Her best Grand Slam performance remains a round of 16 appearance at last year's French Open. This unexpected result shakes up the women's draw at Wimbledon, leaving fans wondering if Cocciaretto can capitalize on this momentum for a deeper run in the tournament.
