Brother of Spanish PM Sánchez to be tried on corruption charges
The younger brother of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, musician David Sánchez, is set to be tried on corruption charges, after a judge rejected a final appeal on Thursday, according to state broadcaster RTVE.
David Sánchez, 51, is facing accusations of abuse of office and influence peddling related to his position as head of the Badajoz Provincial Office for the Performing Arts.
Rejecting the appeal and ordering the opening of an oral hearing, the investigating judge said there was "clear evidence of criminal behaviour," noting that the position occupied by Sánchez had been created especially for his benefit and adapted to his "personal preferences and professional aspirations," according to RTVE.
A court spokesman confirmed the report upon request.
Sánchez is set to be tried alongside 10 other defendants in the case, including the regional head of the Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in the Extremadura region and the president of the Badajoz provincial administration, Miguel Ángel Gallardo.
The centre-left PSOE is the party of Sánchez' brother, the prime minister.
The news is expected to go down well with the opposition conservatives who have long been denouncing cronyism and corruption among the PSOE ranks, including levelling accusations at the prime minister's family.
