Aaron-Wooi Yik win S'pore Open, third title this year

Malaysia's world No 3 pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik had to come back from a first-game loss to beat their South Korean rivals. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Reigning Asian men's doubles champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik created a personal record today by winning the Singapore Open title, their third crown in a year. It was no walk in the park for the world No 3 pair as they had to come back from a first-game loss to beat the dogged 10th ranked South Korean pair Seo Seung Jae-Kim Won Ho 15-21, 21-18, 21-19 in 65 minutes. Aaron-Wooi Yik captured the Badminton Asia Championship title in April and Thailand Open crown two weeks ago. This is their first title in Singapore. The two pairs have played each other twice with both winning once each. In a post-match interview, Aaron attributed today's victory to their mental strength in focusing on the tense match, despite being fatigued having played three tournaments back-to-back. 'We told ourselves not to rush but to keep playing one point at a time. We thank the fans here and back home for the motivation and support. This win is not only for us but also for all of them,' he said. The two-time Olympic bronze medallists won US$74,000 (RM315,296) as the winners of the Singapore Open while the runners-up won US$35,000 (RM149,126) in the World Tour Super 750 event. Aaron-Wooi Yik, who were recently-crowned Malaysian Sportsmen of the Year, have now won a total of five titles in their career. Today's victory also ends Malaysia's 17-year title drought at the Singapore Open in the men's doubles event. The last time a Malaysian pair won the title was Zakry Latif- Fairuzizuan Tazari in 2008. Aaron-Wooi Yik had a remarkable run in Singapore as they defeated some of the world's top pairs, namely Denmark's Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard, Japan's Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi, compatriots Man Wei Cheong-Tee Kai Wun and India's Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy en route to the final.

Loh Kean Yew books 2025 Thailand Open semi-final showdown with rival Kunlavut Vitidsarn

SINGAPORE: Singapore's Loh Kean Yew advanced to the semi-finals of the 2025 Thailand Open, setting up a high-stakes clash against a familiar opponent - Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn, the reigning world champion and top seed. Loh booked his place in the semis after beating Denmark's Rasmus Gemke on Friday (May 16). Currently ranked 11th in the world, Loh will be looking to break a long losing streak against Kunlavut, who holds a 7-1 head-to-head record over him. The Thai has won their last five encounters, including a straight-sets victory in April at the 2025 Badminton Asia Championship, where he edged out Loh 23-21, 21-10 in the men's singles semi-finals. Loh finished with bronze. Loh's sole victory over Kunlavut was about a decade ago. Their semi-final match is scheduled for Saturday. Earlier in May, Loh clinched the men's singles title at the 2025 Taipei Open by defeating top seed and world number 7 Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan.

Sportsman of the Year award gives timely boost to Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik ahead of triple challenge

Malaysia's men's doubles badminton pair, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, aiming for a second world title later this year, received a timely boost ahead of three challenging tournaments in as many weeks. Chia and Soh, who won the world title in 2022, won the National Sportsman Award for 2024 for defending their Olympic Games bronze medal by beating Denmark's Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in Paris. The world No. 5 pair didn't attend the awards ceremony, graced by Malaysia's King, Sultan Ibrahim, as they are competing in the Thailand Open. They will play France's Julien Maio-William Villeger in the first round. They were selected ahead of Lee Zii Jia (badminton), Mohamad Aniq Kasdan (weightlifting), Wong Weng Soon (wushu), and Latif Maxzakir (pencak silat). After Thailand, Chia and Soh will compete in the Malaysia Masters (May 20-25) and Singapore Open (May 27-June 1). The events come a month after Chia and Soh claimed their first Asian title by winning the Badminton Asia Championship. The pair defeated China's Chen Boyang and Liu Yi 21-19, 21-17 in a thrilling 46-minute final held in Ningbo, China. They had stated then that their goal for this year was to reclaim the world crown they won three years ago, to become Malaysia's first badminton world champions. Chia and Soh have never won more than one international title a year, but this could be another record-setting year for them, as they have adapted quickly to the tutelage of new coach Herry Iman Pierngadi. The Indonesian started working with the Malaysian pair in January after 30 years with the Indonesian BA, where he trained some of the world's best doubles combinations. Among them were world and Olympic Games champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan and Chandra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan. Meanwhile, Nor Farah Ain Abdullah is the first female lawn bowler to win the National Sportswoman of the Year. She received the top prize following her gold medal at the 2024 World Indoor Bowls Championships in Guernsey. Nor Farah Ain won the award ahead of Sin Li Jane (tenpin bowling), Nurul Izzah Izzati (track cycling), Nor Farah Mazlan (pencak silat), and Tan Cheong Min (wushu). Sin, however, didn't go home empty-handed, as she was part of the winning Women's Team with Natasha Mohamed Roslan, Gillian Lim, Nora Liyana Natasia Norkamal, Faten Najihah Ahmad Faik, and Nur Syazwani Sahar. The national sepak takraw team won the Men's Team Award. Bonnie Bunyau Gustin was crowned National Paralympic Sportsman after defending his gold medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games by breaking the world record in the 72kg category. The National Paralympic Sportswoman title was won by lawn bowls athlete Hasmunirah Maliki, who won the women's singles title at the 2024 World Field Bowling Championships. The National Men's Coach Award went to powerlifting coach Jamil Adam, and the National Women's Coach Award went to Siti Rahmah Mohamed Nasir from pencak silat. Sunny Si Poh Heng from the Sarawak Tenpin Bowling Association and former president of the Malaysian Badminton Association, Tan Sri Norza Zakaria, were recipients of the Sports Leadership Award. Melaka Governor Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam was the recipient of the Sports Personality Award. Johor Motorsport Racing Team (JMR), Malaysian Deaf Sports Association, Selangor Red Giant (E-Sports MLBB), and the late sports commentator, Datuk Hasbullah Awang, received Special Awards.

Herry denies Aaron-Wooi Yik's performance declined

KUALA LUMPUR: National men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi denied that the declining performance of the 2025 Badminton Asia Championship (BAC) champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik was the reason for their defeat in the 2025 Sudirman Cup quarter-finals against Japan, recently. On the contrary, he considered the national pair, ranked fourth in the world, to be unlucky when they lost to the 17th-ranked pair, Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi 21-12, 20-22, 21-23. 'The match result itself showed a tough competition. We won the first set then narrowly lost the next two sets. 'For me, it was more a 'luck' factor in the final points, not because their performance had declined,' he told reporters after the national squad's training session here today. According to Herry, the selection of players was made collectively by the coaching staff and Aaron-Wooi Yik was fielded after taking into account the 'champion aura' even though the most recent meeting between the professional pair of Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Mohd Rumsani and the 2021 world champion was in favour of the national pair. Meanwhile, regarding the latest performance of Aaron-Wooi Yik after undergoing intensive training under his supervision, Herry said the national pair had shown improvement but there was still room for improvement. 'Their playing style is different now, but the aspects of physical strength and attacking power, especially from the back of the court, still need to be improved,' he said. He said Aaron-Wooi Yik will next compete in the Thailand Open from May 13 to 18. 'They remain among the country's main backups. With continued hard work, I am confident they will be able to bounce back and perform better in the upcoming tournament. At the 2025 Sudirman Cup in Xiamen, China, Malaysia crashed out in the quarter-finals after losing to the hosts 0-3. Earlier, Malaysia emerged as the runner-up in Group C, losing 2-3 to Japan in the final group stage match.
