Asking for help is a strength, Jonassen tells Tze Yong
KUALA LUMPUR: National men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong has been advised to seek support and not go through his recovery journey alone, following confirmation that he will undergo surgery for an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. National singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen said that while Tze Yong is mentally strong, it is important for him to know that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. 'At the end of the day, it comes down to the athlete. Please always ask for help. When you're there, you're not on your own. But sometimes it can feel that you're there on your own with your own issue and those things. Do reach out. 'It's not a weakness to ask for help. For sure, we'll be there monitoring all the way,' he told reporters when met at a training session here today. The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), in a statement on Friday, confirmed that Tze Yong, 25, was forced to retire from his opening-round match against Hong Kong's Angus Ng Ka Long at the Malaysia Masters last month due to knee pain. BAM said a thorough medical examination and magnetic resonance imaging have since confirmed a torn ACL requiring surgical intervention. Despite the setback, Tze Yong, in the same statement, said he is optimistic and committed to his rehabilitation journey. Jonassen said it is important for the 2022 Commonwealth Games men's singles silver medallist to focus on the recovery process one step at a time. 'Of course, it takes a strong character to want to come back, and that's why I believe he has the ability to do so,' he said. Previously, Tze Yong has suffered various injuries, including a muscle tear in his back and a spinal injury last year. He underwent a long period of rest and rehabilitation before returning to action in the Badminton Asia Championship 2025 in Ningbo, China, in April.

May be tough for Tze Yong to regain old form after ACL setback
KUALA LUMPUR: The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained by national men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong may well see him struggle to regain his old form, said former world number one Roslin Hashim. The ex-national shuttler also admitted that even before the ACL injury, Tze Yong's performances of late had been quite shaky since returning to action in April following a back injury. 'When Tze Yong sustained the lower back injury previously, he had to undergo surgery... now he has got an ACL injury (knee). These two lower parts of the body are extremely crucial to a shuttler. 'When he came back to action (after his lower back injury), his performance wasn't that stable either. At an age where he should be reaching his peak powers but, unfortunately, he has suffered another serious injury and his recovery this time will take a long time. So, it will be difficult for Tze Yong to regain his old form,' he told Bernama. The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) confirmed in a statement yesterday that Tze Yong suffered an ACL injury, with the 25-year-old shuttler also admitting to finding it hard to accept this latest injury blow after all the efforts he had put in to get back to action. BAM singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen said Tze Yong, who may be sidelined for nine to 12 months, is currently undergoing prehabilitation (prehab) to strengthen the knee and the surrounding muscles ahead of the scheduled surgery for the ACL injury he sustained at the 2025 Malaysia Masters last month. Tze Yong has suffered various injuries, including a muscle tear in his back followed by a spinal injury since last year and underwent a long period of rest and rehabilitation before returning to action in the Badminton Asia Championship 2025 in Ningbo, China, in April. Despite his bleak assessment of Tze Yong's situation, Roslin, however, hopes the 2022 Commonwealth Games men's singles silver medallist possesses a burning desire and determination to fight back from adversity. 'I sympathise with Tze Yong, I hope he remains strong. If he intends to get back on the court, he will need every ounce of his inner strength and remain steadfast in facing this latest setback,' he said. Roslin, winner of the men's singles gold medal at the 2001 SEA Games, said the absence of the Johor-born Tze Yong, ranked 199 in the world, has also been a huge loss for the national camp. He admitted that Tze Yong is a player with huge potential, having once risen to as high as 14th in the world, and has the qualities required to be one of the world's top shuttlers. 'It's like we have lost a truly good player. We could see his potential as he won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games... unfortunately, injuries have curtailed his progress,' he said.

ACL injury could sideline Tze Yong for up to a year
KUALA LUMPUR: National men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong is expected to be out of top-level competition for up to a year due to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury he sustained at the recent Malaysia Masters. Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen said this is the worst-case scenario for Tze Yong, who is scheduled to undergo surgery. 'The operation date has not been set. It (surgery process) is quite technical, but what I understand is that the stronger you can get before the surgery, the better your recovery will be. 'There are also some bruises and swelling that need to go away. Again, everything we're doing right now is to give him the best chance to have a successful surgery,' he told reporters at Akademi Badminton Malaysia, Bukit Kiara, here today. Jonassen acknowledged that recovering from an ACL injury is one of the most demanding challenges for an athlete, but the case of Spain's former Olympic champion Carolina Marin, who returned strongly after similar injuries, gave Tze Yong hope. Jonassen is confident that Tze Yong will find inspiration from her experience and make a comeback when the time is right. 'I can't speak for him (about the early retirement question), but from my understanding, he is very motivated to come back. 'As long as there's motivation, we must follow the path. We're taking inspiration from other top athletes who have managed to bounce back. I believe in Tze Yong's ability and determination,' he added. Jonassen clarified that Tze Yong will not be eligible for a second protected ranking as it can only be granted once within a particular period. 'My main concern right now isn't the rankings. It's about getting the surgery done, going through the rehabilitation, and keeping Tze Yong motivated,' he said. With Tze Yong's absence, Jonassen revealed plans to strengthen the senior men's singles squad by grooming juniors who are transitioning to the senior level this year. 'It's always a tough blow when one of your best players is out due to injury. But we will keep working hard to develop the next generation,' he said. This morning, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) confirmed that Tze Yong will undergo knee surgery after scans revealed the ACL injury. 'It's tough to accept, especially after all the hard work leading up to this point, but I know this is just another challenge to overcome. I'm staying positive, following the prehab plan, and I'm fully focused on coming back stronger. I also want to thank all my fans for your kind messages - it really means a lot to me,' said Tze Yong. Tze Yong has suffered various injuries, including a muscle tear in his back followed by a spinal injury since last year and underwent a long period of rest and rehabilitation before returning to action in the Badminton Asia Championship 2025 in Ningbo, China, in April.
