Cop's ‘Khaki' number plate costs him Rs 5,000
Lucknow: A sub-inspector of Lucknow Police was fined Rs 5,000 on Monday for riding a motorcycle at busy Hazratganj crossing with "Khaki" written in place of a valid registration number plate in violation of traffic norms.
A photo of the officer, identified as Mahendra Pratap Singh Baghel, riding the motorcycle in uniform, went viral on social media. The image drew public ire, with many accusing the cop of misusing his position and setting a poor example.
Taking swift action, Bagresh Sharma, in charge of the secretariat outpost under Hazratganj Police Station, issued a challan of Rs 5,000 under the Motor Vehicles Act.
SHO Hazratganj Vikram Singh said: "The officer was clearly in violation of the law.
Wearing a uniform does not give anyone immunity. If needed, departmental action will also be considered."
The incident comes amid a citywide crackdown on traffic violations, particularly targeting tampered, modified, or missing number plates.
A senior traffic police official said: "Govt officers and uniformed personnel are expected to uphold the law, not bypass it. This action serves as a clear message — traffic rules apply to everyone, without exception."
