Influencer and TV star tragically dies aged 30
Beloved TV star and influencer Nihal Candan has tragically died aged 30 after a devastating battle with anorexia nervosa. The Turkish household name first rose to fame in 2014 during her stints on reality shows Bu Tarz Benim and Survivor. Beyond TV, Ms Candan cultivated a significant social media following where she shared beauty, fashion and lifestyle content, eventually launching her own beauty brand. In November 2023, Ms Candan and her sister Bahar were arrested on charges of fraud and money laundering, allegedly connected to a scam involving discounted vehicle sales. During her time in prison, Ms Candan developed anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder characterised by an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted body image. Her health deteriorated rapidly, leading to her release from prison in Apeil 2024 due to medical concerns. Ms Candan was admitted to hospital earlier this month sparking a public plea from her sister. 'My sister was taken to the hospital, she has anorexia … Do something, my sister is dying,' she said. On June 19, quick-thinking doctors were able to save Ms Candan's life after her heart stopped temporarily. Tragically, just one day later she suffered a second cardiac arrest and despite resuscitation efforts she was pronounced dead. Ms Candan had reportedly dropped to just 23 kilograms while undergoing treatment in hospital. Devastating footage of her funeral has emerged with clips of her sister crying while holding a photo of Ms Candan with the words '1995 – infinity' written below. Hundreds of fans flocked to the comment sections of Ms Candan's latest post to share their heartfelt condolences, calling it 'devastating' and a 'tragedy'. 'I literally cried over this. she was so young and beautiful,' said one. 'You left this world too early … But the energy, smile and memories you left behind are still with us,' said another. 'There is nothing to say, I don't know what to say, I'm so sorry,' wrote a third. The Federation of Women's Associations of Turkey has since shared a statement detailing the 'deadly pressure' of society. 'Nihal Candan's death due to anorexia nervosa once again reveals that the pressures and impositions placed on women's bodies by society can reach deadly levels,' they wrote on X 'Aesthetic norms, the fantasy of the perfect body constantly reproduced by the media, and the feeling of 'having to be beautiful' push women to take life-threatening risks, while TV programs and competitions objectify them. This issue also reflects a broader problem of inequality. It is something we must discuss and debate extensively.' Ms Candan had just celebrated her 30th birthday in hospital last week.

Several local reports claim that the star reportedly weighed 23 kilograms before passing. According to CCN Turkey, Candan lost approximately 37 kilograms in the last two years, which worsened her already severe condition. The Turkish influencer passed while she was undergoing treatment at a local hospital, when her heart suddenly stopped, and doctors couldn't revive her using CPR. Anorexia is an eating disorder that affects individuals in a variety of ways, including body image issues, fear of gaining weight, and repeated food restriction in the desire to stay thin. Fashion designer Pınar Kerimoğlu revealed Candan's worsening condition shortly before fellow influencer Sıla Doğu confirmed Nihal Candan's death on Instagram. Additionally, before her passing, Candan's sister, Bahar, wrote on her socials, "My sister was taken to the hospital, she is anorexic... Do something, my sister is dying. She could not digest what she experienced. I hope you can feel remorse for slandering a young person like this and ruining her life." Last week, Candan celebrated her 30th birthday with a Labubu-themed cake in the hospital alongside her friends. Who was Nihal Candan? Candan was a successful Turkish influencer with more than 900,000 followers on Instagram. She first rose to fame in 2014 after appearing on "Bu Tarz Benim," a famous fashion show in Turkey. Her popularity helped launch her own business, Nihal Candan Beauty Center. However, despite a successful career in fashion, Candan and her sister were arrested in 2023 on charges of fraud and money laundering. After serving time in prison, Candan developed severe anorexia and lost over 30 kilograms, leading to her release in 2025 for immediate hospitalization.
