'Unflappable' Dog Dale breaks club record in AFL rout
Dashing defender Bailey Dale has racked up a Western Bulldogs record of 49 possessions in a 91-point demolition of Essendon at Marvel Stadium. After winning five of their previous six games, Essendon had the chance to test their credentials against a genuine finals contender on Saturday night. But they wilted against the red-hot Bulldogs, who showed no ill-effects following a match in the sapping Darwin humidity last week by slamming through the first nine goals of the game. The Dogs' 18.19 (127) to 5.6 (36) victory came in front of 47,366 fans, with thousands of Bombers fans making an early exit amid the on-field carnage. Essendon failed to curb Dale's influence in any way, as the 28-year-old almost notched 50 disposals in the dying stages. By three-quarter time, Dale had already equalled the Bulldogs' record of 32 uncontested possessions in a game. Dale broke the possession mark for a Bulldogs late in the last quarter, previously held by former captain Ryan Griffen. "(Dale) is pretty unflappable," Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said. "His instincts in the game, his game sense is as good as anyone." Essendon coach Brad Scott insisted they had plans to stop Dale, just none worked. "Clearly both of them didn't work, and then we went to play an even number in the forward line and try to attack him, and that didn't work either," Scott said. "I just think it's a really good lesson for us, that we need to be better with ball in hand and absorbing their pressure." Essendon didn't register their first goal of the match until the 17th minute of the second quarter, and didn't add another in the first half to be 59 adrift at the main break. After slumping to 0-2, the Bombers' only defeat before facing the Bulldogs had been to premiership favourites Collingwood. But their five victories had come against bottom-seven teams, meaning a clash with the high-flying Bulldogs (6-4) was always going to be a serious challenge. The Bulldogs had game-breakers everywhere, typically led by captain Marcus Bontempelli, who slotted the first goal of the match. Small forward Rhylee West was imposing in the air and on the ground inside-50, finishing with a game-high four goals The Bulldogs, who are without star forward Sam Darcy long-term, also hammered Port Adelaide by 90 points two weeks ago. Bulldogs forward Arty Jones, who was recalled for his first game since round two was subbed out early in the second term with a hamstring injury. The Bulldogs have a five-day break before heading to Geelong for a Thursday night showdown against the Cats, as they meet former teammate Bailey Smith for the first time. Essendon have a chance to rebound when they face rebuilding Richmond in the Dreamtime match next Friday night. Bulldogs deliver Essendon a brutal reality check in record-breaking night
The Western Bulldogs have delivered Essendon a brutal 91-point reality check in the most one-sided encounter we've seen in 2025. Remarkably, the margin could have been bigger given the 18.19 (127) to 5.6 (36) result – making the Dogs now the only side to record two 90-point plus beltings so far this season. It was a one-way training run for the Dogs from the opening bounce as they opened up a 10-goal to one half time buffer to effectively seal the match. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? He also set an AFL record for 2025 with 1016 metres gained. Rhylee West also had a career-best night with four goals from his 19 disposals and at one point hit the Bombers with an NBA-inspired 'too small' taunt. The only sour note was a hamstring injury to Arty Jones who was subbed out before half time. For the Bombers, there were shades of their 2019 disaster against the Dogs when they managed just the one goal to half time. To their credit, Essendon continued to fight – but still recorded their second worst ever total in a loss to the Bulldogs. The 91-point win highlighted just how dominant the Dogs are across the ground as they won every facet of the contest. The AFL's number one ranked scoring side in the past five matches showed exactly why they are so dangerous – eclipsing their average of 112 points. Fox Footy's Nathan Buckley even described the side as the AFL's 'Globetrotters'. In the demolition of the Dons, there were two standouts – Dale racking up a club-best 49 disposals and the work of the 're-cast' West. The makeshift forward finished with a team-high four goals in an eye catching display. 'He's so combative, you've got to love how he goes about it,' Buckley praised. 'He would be a frustrated midfielder – someone who wasn't able to make it and push into the midfield. 'But he's been re-cast and he's accepted that role. He became a stopper … now he's a stopper, a competitor and a goal scorer. 'He's been exceptional.' Essendon went in to Saturday night's contest with five wins from their past six games and appeared ready to test themselves against a strong Bulldogs outfit. But what we got instead was an Essendon that simply rolled over and failed to stop the Bulldogs' charge. Brownlow Medallist Buckley said the 91-point belting sent a 'fairly clear message'. 'You come up against the best sides in the competition and you get an audit of your own game,' Buckley explained. 'Essendon, despite what they've put together in the last six weeks, have been given a fairly clear message that there's still a lot of work to do in most phases. 'That will be the licking of the wounds during the week and working out, 'OK, where do we go from here?'.'

Western Bulldogs gun Bailey Dale shatters club disposal record with 49 in huge win over Essendon
Western Bulldogs defender Bailey Dale has set a new club record for disposals with a staggering performance in his side's 91-point demolition of Essendon. Dale ran riot under the roof at Marvel Stadium, racking up an astonishing 49 disposals in a monumental display. The running defender did as he pleased throughout the night, finishing the game with the absurd stat line of 37 kicks, 12 handballs, five marks and 1016m gained. The 49 possessions beat the previous club record of 47, which was held by Ryan Griffen and Jackson Macrae. As well as Dale, Tom Liberatore feasted in the midfield with 34 touches, while Matt Kennedy (31), Ed Richards (27 and two goals) and Marcus Bontempelli (24 and two goals) were also prominant. Rhylee West capitalised up forward with four goals and Buku Khamis chimed in with three. The only downside was the suspected hamstring injury to Arthur Jones in the second term. The win lifts the Bulldogs up to fifth place on the ladder, ahead of Adelaide and Geelong on percentage.
