None to help, farmers raise funds to lay road to rain-hit fields

Hyderabad: With neither officials nor politicians hearing their pleas to lay an approach road to access their fields during rains, farmers of Tekmal village in Medak district have now decided to do it on their own. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The farmers took up the work a few months ago after collecting about Rs 8 lakh. "There is still more work to be done. The govt should realise that the approach road is a necessity for us and come forward to complete it," said Baja Kistaiah, a 60-year-old farmer. There are nearly100 families in the village and over 20 families are affected as their fields spread over 25 acres, which is on the other side of the Gunduvagu stream, becomes inaccessible during rains. Tractors and harvesters get stuck in the mud and even labourers are unwilling to work due to lack of a proper approach road, farmers said. Paddy and cotton is cultivated here. The farmers said that they sourced the material including sand, cement, gravel and cement pipes with the money collected and began the work. The approach road about 50 feet and is being laid by using reinforced cement concrete pipes, they said. The culvert over Gunduvagu will facilitate the water from the stream to flow through the cement pipes when it rains, allowing farmers to easily access their fields. The entire work would take about Rs 10 lakh more. Kistaiah said that not all farmers from the affected families have been able to contribute. "It is not right to pressure them, but they have all agreed to do it. Since we did not want the work to get delayed, we started it," he said.
