Russia to integrate AI model Gigachat into ISS systems
-- Russia is set to incorporate its domestic artificial intelligence model, Gigachat, into the International Space Station's (ISS) IT systems, according to the head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos. Gigachat, a product of Russia's largest bank, Sberbank, is one of the country's two main large language models (LLM), as Russia aims to keep pace with the United States and China in the global AI race. Dmitry Bakanov, the chief of Roscosmos, disclosed that the forthcoming mission to the ISS this fall will carry all the necessary equipment for Gigachat to operate. The AI model will aid the crew in processing satellite imagery, doubling the highest resolution from one meter per pixel to 0.5 meters. Bakanov made this announcement at a technology conference in Moscow, describing the AI integration as "direct assistance for the cosmonauts." Earlier this year, in April, a Russian spacecraft transported American astronaut Jonathan Kim and Russian cosmonauts Sergei Ryzhikov and Alexei Zubritsky to the ISS. The next Russian mission to the ISS is scheduled for November 27. Russia has committed to participating in the ISS until 2028. Additionally, the country has plans to launch the initial two modules of its own new space station in 2027. Russia plans to integrate homegrown AI model into space station
MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia plans to integrate its homegrown Gigachat artificial intelligence model into IT systems on the International Space Station (ISS), the head of space agency Roscosmos said on Tuesday. Gigachat, developed by the country's largest bank, Sberbank, is one of Russia's two flagship large language models (LLM) as it tries to catch up with the United States and China in the global AI race. Roscosmos chief Dmitry Bakanov said that the next mission to the ISS this autumn will deliver everything needed for the model to function. Gigachat will assist the crew with processing satellite imagery, increasing the maximum resolution from one meter per pixel to 0.5 meters. "This is a direct assistance for the cosmonauts," Bakanov told a technology conference in Moscow. In April, a Russian spacecraft delivered American astronaut Jonathan Kim and Russian cosmonauts Sergei Ryzhikov and Alexei Zubritsky to the ISS. The next Russian spacecraft mission to the ISS is planned for November 27. Russia has announced it will participate in the ISS until 2028 and plans to launch the first two modules of its own new space station in 2027. Sberbank is focusing on developing AI agents - goal-directed generative AI systems designed to process information, make decisions and take actions without direct, constant human input.

BRICS exchange Earth remote sensing data
SEENEWS The BRICS countries, under the agreement on cooperation in the field of the Earth Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation, have exchanged data covering more than 27 million square kilometres of the Earth's surface. This was reported by the press service of Roscosmos, citing remarks by its Director General, Dmitry Bakanov, at a meeting of the heads of the space agencies of the member states, according to BRICS TV. Bakanov noted that within just the first year of implementing the agreement, participants received a significant volume of information. Notably, China provided Russia with data covering 560,000 square kilometres, which was used for environmental monitoring. In turn, Russian satellites supplied Indian partners with information on 34,500 square kilometres, aiding efforts in the aftermath of earthquakes. Bakanov emphasised that the implementation of the agreement represents an important step in developing cooperation for the peaceful exploration of outer space. The data is collected from the satellites and ground infrastructure of the five member countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. He also expressed hope that new BRICS members would show interest in joining the agreement. During the meeting, a roadmap was presented for the phased creation of a data exchange platform for Earth Remote Sensing from 2025 to 2029. Former head of Ukraine's Security Service Bakanov is not involved in any criminal cases
Ivan Bakanov, former Head of the Security Service of Ukraine, is not involved in any criminal cases of the State Bureau of Investigation. Source: a response from the State Bureau of Investigation to Ukrainska Pravda's inquiry Quote from the document: "There are no criminal cases against Ivan Bakanov in the cases of the State Bureau of Investigation investigators." A response from the State Bureau of Investigation to Ukrainska Pravda's inquiry Screenshot: Ukrainska Pravda Why this is important: On 17 July 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Bakanov from his post as head of the Security Service of Ukraine for "failure to perform official duties, which led to human casualties or other serious consequences", as provided for in Article 47 of the Disciplinary Statute of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As it was revealed in February 2023, the Security Service of Ukraine conducted an internal investigation of its former head, but its results were classified. To date, it has not been known whether Bakanov is involved in criminal cases related to his former work. Support Ukrainska Pravda on Patreon!

Head of Russian Space Program Mysteriously Axed
The second chief of the Russian space corporation Roscosmos has been sacked after just two and a half years. Russia's space chief Yuri Borisov has been replaced by former Roscosmos staffer and former deputy minister of transport Dmitry Bakanov, Ars Technica reports. The news comes less than three years after Dmitry Rogozin, Russia's former highly abrasive and unpredictable space head, was replaced by Borisov. Borisov has proved to be a far more predictable agency leader than Rogozin, though that clearly wasn't enough to hang onto the role. While we have no idea why Borisov was sacked, there are plenty of unverified rumors swirling, as Ars reports, from a failed intermediate-range ballistic missile test last year to the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of Borisov's 43-year-old son. Especially following Russia's extremely costly invasion of Ukraine, Russia's space efforts have stagnated, suffering a lack of private investment, brain drain, and slowing commercial markets, in Ars' analysis. The country is still looking to launch its own orbital space station to replace the International Space Station. Late last year, Roscosmos threw its weight behind NASA's plans to destroy the International Space Station starting in 2030. But whether the first two modules of the new station will launch as soon as 2027, plans that Borisov announced in 2024, remains to be seen. The war in Ukraine has severed many of Russia's ties to its international space partners, forcing it to forge its own way. The company's efforts to land an uncrewed spacecraft on the Moon also failed in 2023, marking a major setback for Roscosmos' ambitions. Bakanov was the head of a company called Gonets, a small satellite communications system that was mainly used for government purposes, Reuters reports. Gonets represented Russia in the global satellite comms project OneWeb, but the country pulled out in 2018, citing possible risks to national security. Could Bakanov's appointment be a sign that an international arms race in space is heating up? According to Reuters, the last agreement limiting the number of nuclear weapons between the US and Russia is set to expire next year, which could set the stage for a race to deliver nuclear weapons into orbit. The two world powers clashed at the United Nations last year over a proposed ban on nuclear weapons in space. In short, we can only guess as to why Borisov was axed. But given the turbulent years the space agency has been through already, Roscosmos is in dire need of new energy. Meanwhile, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is currently getting plush government contracts for his own company while aiming his sights at regulators from within the White House — putting the US space program on a very different trajectory.
