Manitoba officials says wildfire contained in Flin Flon, wind change could push it into city
Article content Fire crews in northern Manitoba have so far been able to contain an encroaching wildfire that forced thousands from their homes, while more residents in Saskatchewan have been told to leave due to a fast-moving blaze. Article content Article content Officials in Flin Flon, Man., say the fire burning near the mining city has been contained to outside its perimeter highway, and that as of Saturday evening there have been no structure losses. Article content Article content Manitoba has issued an evacuation order for Bakers Narrows Provincial Park, just south of Flin Flon, due to the blaze in the area. Article content Wildfires in Manitoba have displaced more than 17,000 people, and evacuees are being offered food and shelter in several communities. Article content Thousands have also been affected by wildfires in Saskatchewan and Alberta, with several communities already forced to evacuate. Article content The weather has not been cooperating in parts of the Prairie provinces where wildfires are burning out-of-control. Article content Flin Flon Mayor George Fontaine has said a change in wind direction could push the fire into the city. Article content Officials said in a Facebook post Sunday morning that electricity has been restored in parts of the city and that work continues to get all areas back online. Article content 'We're incredibly grateful for all of the support that departments from across Manitoba have provided us. They've done an outstanding job protecting our homes and the town we love,' the post said. Article content 'Our utmost gratitude goes out to all of those who have taken time away from their homes and families to put themselves in harm's way.' Article content Article content Higher courts in Manitoba and Saskatchewan were scheduled to meet in Winnipeg this week for a joint education session, but both courts decided to cancel the meeting given the pressing need to make hotel spaces available for evacuees. The province has issued an evacuation order for Bakers Narrows Provincial Park, just south of Flin Flon, due to the blaze in the area. City officials say there were some property and structure losses in the Bakers Narrows area, but did not have total numbers on how many properties were affected. Wildfires in Manitoba have displaced more than 17,000 people, and evacuees are being offered food and shelter in several communities. Manitoba to implement new restrictions as wildfires continue to burn out of control

THE CANADIAN PRESS/David Lipnowski The Manitoba Wildfire Service is increasing fire and travel restrictions throughout the province in an effort to combat the current wildfire situation. The province said in it's latest fire bulletin Thursday that 'human activity continues to significantly contribute to Manitoba's current wildfire situation.' With that, the service will be implementing Level 3 restrictions for all 22 burn areas in the province starting at 8 a.m. on Friday. The newest restrictions would mean all hiking trails and water routes are closed, all burn permits are cancelled and no other permits will be issued, camping is restricted to developed campgrounds, boats are only allowed at developed shorelines, and lodge access is only allowed at main lodges. The local conservation officers also has discretion for travel permits for industrial operations on non-designated or unrecognized roads, the province said. The Level 3 restrictions will be in place until further notice. A full list of the province's burn areas can be found online. Along with the new restrictions the province shared the state of emergency will be in effect until June 26. The province also announced Bakers Narrows Provincial Park campground is now closed and all campers need to leave the campground by 8 p.m. There continues to be 22 wildfires burning in Manitoba and there have been 103 fires in 2025.
