A police officer slain Saturday night during a gun battle with an armed man has been identified as Samuel Riveros, a nine-year veteran of the Baldwin Park department, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. Riveros, 35, and his partner were responding to a call of shots fired around 7:15 p.m. on the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue, where they found a man unresponsive. As they tended to the victim, a gunman armed with a rifle ambushed the officers, killing Riveros and wounding his partner. The unidentified victim was found on the front lawn of the home that prompted the Baldwin Park Police response, the City of Baldwin Park said in a statement, and was pronounced dead at the hospital.. Riveros' partner, Anthony Pimental, was in stable condition on Sunday, officials said. The suspect was also shot and was in stable condition. 'Our officer was an amazing man,' Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert Lopez told reporters during a press conference early Sunday morning. 'He was an avid snowboarder, a Dodger fan. One of the interesting things that I found is he would travel and go see the Dodgers play at different stadiums across the United States. It's extremely tragic to have to deal with this.'Baldwin Park Mayor Alejandra Avila also addressed his city's loss, saying in the statement: 'Last night was a night of tragedy for our community. Many in our community have been affected by these crimes, and I ask that you embrace your officers and neighbors, support them in their time of need and show one another the best of Baldwin Park.'A somber procession from Baldwin Park to Boyle Heights followed the fatality as the slain officer's body was taken to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner's office. Baldwin Park officer shot and killed was 'amazing guy,' police chief says
The law enforcement community in Los Angeles was in mourning on Sunday after a police officer was killed in a shootout Saturday. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, officers with the Baldwin Park Police Department responded to reports of a man with a rifle at about 7:12 p.m. on the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue. The officers found the suspect, and the encounter escalated into a shooting. 2 officers were shot, as well as the suspect. Both officers were transported to a local hospital, where one was pronounced dead. The other officer is in stable condition, the LASD said on Sunday morning. The suspect is also in stable condition. He was taken into custody and remains unidentified publicly. The body of a man with a fatal gunshot wound was found at the location of the initial reports. On Saturday, L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna said it's believed that the suspect was involved in that killing. The deceased officer remains unidentified publicly as of 10:20 a.m. Sunday. During a news conference on Saturday night, Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert Lopez called the fallen officer an "amazing guy." "He answered a call of duty of shots fired to protect our residents in Baldwin Park," Lopez said. "He and his other officer responded and as is customary with any police officer, or any sheriff's deputy, they always respond and go into the fire." Lopez added that the man was an avid Dodgers fan and snowboarder. On Sunday, Assemblywoman Blanca E. Rubio, who represents Baldwin Park, issued a statement about the tragic event. "Thank you for the courage you held and the deeply humble decision you made to protect and serve the people of Baldwin Park, may you rest easy," Rubio said in part. "The sacrifices these officers make to keep us safe is unbelievable; something we are reminded of when we witness tragedies such as the one that happened last night." contributed to this report.

1 officer killed, 1 wounded and another person dead in Los Angeles County shooting
One police officer was killed and another was injured after a shooting Saturday evening in a city west of Los Angeles, authorities said. Another person was found dead. An adult male suspect was wounded but has been taken into custody, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna. He said the department is leading an investigation into a double homicide in Baldwin Park. Luna and Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert López held a news conference shortly after the shooting. 'It's extremely tragic to have to deal with this,' López said. The injured officer is in good condition and with his family, he added. Police in Baldwin Park responded to a call at around 7 p.m. of someone shooting rounds with a rifle. When the officers arrived, they were 'met by gunfire,' Luna said. At least one officer fired shots after police came under fire. It is unclear how many shots were fired, but the sheriff said that he believed the weapon used in the shooting has been recovered. The names of the victims have not been released as of Sunday morning. López said the officer who was killed was an 'amazing man' who liked snowboarding and traveled to see Dodger games across the United States.

In a second video reviewed by the outlet, an additional six shots were fired 10 minutes later 'near the corner of Palm and Filhurst Avenue as helicopters circled overhead.' "It sounded like fireworks … just going off constantly back and forth … but then you hear patrol cars from everywhere, coming in, swarming. It was crazy," a witness told ABC 7 Eyewitness News.
