Balearia Adds High-Speed Ferry to Tarifa-Tangier Route

Rabat – Spanish ferry company Balearia has expanded its services between Tarifa in Spain and Tangier in Morocco, by adding a new high-speed ferry, the Jaume I, starting today, Friday. The ferry departed from the port of Tarifa at 11:00 AM. The Jaume I can carry over 600 passengers and 150 vehicles. With this new addition, Balearia will increase its daily trips on this route from four to six. The company plans to further expand the service in the upcoming weeks and offer between eight and 12 daily trips, depending on demand. 'It's a very important route for our customers, for Moroccans, and for all tourists visiting Morocco, particularly the city of Tangier,' said Bassoul, a Balearia spokesperson. 'We aim to offer a comfortable and punctual service to all those who place their trust in Baleària.' Balearia has been operating between Spain and Morocco for over 20 years. This new Tarifa–Tangier route is the company's fourth connection between the two countries. It already runs services from Tangier Med to Algeciras and Motril, and from Nador to Almeria. Balearia also announced that it has won a 15-year contract (2025–2040) to operate this route. As part of the agreement, the company will introduce two new electric ships with 800 passenger seats each. These vessels, to be built in Spain, will offer 100% electric travel, making this route the first 'Green Corridor' between Africa and Europe. 'We hope that once the service is up and running, all those who travel with us will enjoy a journey free of noise, vibrations, and emissions,' concluded the spokesperson. New Tarifa-Tanger ferry route by Baleària enhances Spain-Morocco links

The Spanish shipping company Baleària will launch a new maritime route connecting the port of Tarifa (southern Spain) to Tanger Ville starting on May 8, the company announced in a statement on Tuesday. This route will be operated by the high-speed ferry Avemar Dos, which recently successfully completed docking trials at both ports. This marks the fourth route operated by Baleària between Spain and Morocco, according to the company. Upon its opening, the line will offer four daily round trips in each direction, with the frequency expected to gradually increase during the summer season. The crossing, estimated to take one hour, will initially be operated by Avemar Dos, before the introduction of a second, renovated high-speed ferry. «The launch of this new line is a strategic step to strengthen our presence in Morocco», said Georges Bassoul, CEO of Baleària, as quoted in the statement. As part of its energy transition, the company also plans to construct two 100% electric, zero-emission high-speed ferries, which are expected to serve this route by 2027.

Maritime Routes Resume Between Spain, Morocco After Weather Delays

Doha – Maritime traffic between Morocco and Spain resumed cautiously on Friday after severe weather conditions forced cancellations and disruptions on Thursday. The Port Authority of Tangier Med has authorized vessels to increase their scheduled trips to address the backlog caused by Thursday's suspension. According to Spanish media, high-speed ferries operated by Armas Trasmediterránea and Baleària, along with Baleària's conventional ferry service, have resumed normal operations following the improvement in weather conditions. However, maritime connections between Tarifa and Tangier City remain suspended due to ongoing adverse weather. Thursday's disruptions were triggered by wind speeds exceeding 70 kilometers per hour, coupled with treacherous wave conditions that rendered navigation hazardous in the Strait of Gibraltar. By Friday, conditions improved markedly, with wind speeds dropping to an average of 22 kilometers per hour, while gusts ranged between 30 and 35 kilometers per hour, allowing for safer passage. This marks the second weather-related disruption within a week. On Tuesday, passenger movement between Algeciras, Tarifa, and Tangier ports was affected by unfavorable weather conditions impacting the Gibraltar Strait. Several morning departures from Algeciras to Tangier Med were impacted, while all maritime connections from Tarifa were canceled that day. Port authorities have advised passengers to contact their respective shipping companies directly regarding potential delays or cancellations of scheduled trips. Looking ahead, maritime traffic between Tangier Med and Spanish ports remains at the mercy of weather conditions, with forecasts suggesting another potential suspension next Tuesday due to anticipated strong winds and maritime disturbances in the region. These disruptions come amid a period of intense atmospheric pressure shifts affecting the region since early March, bringing storms and powerful winds that have led to widespread flooding across several countries. These weather patterns have helped alleviate the drought conditions that have dominated the region in recent years.
