Muslims take out protest in Shivamogga against Waqf (Amendment) Act
Shivamogga
Hundreds of members of the Muslim community in Shivamogga took out a protest march in the city on Saturday, opposing the Waqf Amendment Act 2025.
The protesters, holding national flags, began the march from Waqf Bhavan and reached the Deputy Commissioner's office. Along the march, they raised slogans—Save Waqf and Save Constitution. They assembled in front of the office, where they held a protest meeting. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board had convened the protest.
Addressing the protesters, Shahul Hameed, a religious leader of the community, said that the protest was held to oppose the Centre's move. The BJP had been making decisions targeting people of one particular religion all these years. 'We are all Indians, and we have equal rights as per the Constitution,' he said.
The amendments to the Waqf Act were against the interests of the Muslims. 'The amendments allow non-Muslims on the Waqf committees. However, this is not allowed in any committees with respect to the properties of other religions. The amendments should be withdrawn,' he demanded.
Balkhees Banu, MLC, Sudhir Kumar Murolli, Congress spokesperson, and others participated in the meeting. The organisers later submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Gurudatt Hegde.
The district administration had deployed police across the city to avoid any untoward incident during the protest. The police had restricted vehicles on the roads where the protest march was held. Superintendent of Police G.K. Mithun Kumar and other senior police officers monitored the situation.
