Ballpark Ambassadors program aimed at improving visitor experience near Coors Field
DENVER (KDVR) — On Monday morning, several ambassadors hit the streets around Coors Field as part of a new program aiming to improve the visitor experience to the area.
The Ballpark General Improvement District was created and one of its first orders of business was to get this ambassador program up and running, with the four major goals of hospitality, cleaning, safety and outreach.

Coors Field is typically surrounded by black and purple hats, but now add orange to the mix.
'So you can easily see us,' said Luke McCarthy, operations manager for the Ballpark GID Ambassadors Program.
Before the Rockies season starts, the ambassadors' first goal is cleaning up the neighborhood, deployed with trash cans and brooms for all things big and small.
'We like to say 'no butt left behind,' so we pick up every cigarette butt,' said McCarthy.
And when fans start to show up next month, especially from out of town, those orange hats make them easy to spot to answer questions about anything from the nearest restaurants to directions to the ballpark.
'We're here to help,' said McCarthy.

Safety is also a priority. McCarthy said the ambassadors are all trained directly by Denver police staff on de-escalation and to call 911.
'So we can assist as best as possible without impeding whatever needs to get help,' he says.
Denver police provided a statement on the ambassador program:
'DPD believes public safety can best be achieved through partnerships with the community, and the ambassadors will provide extra eyes and ears in the downtown area to report crimes or safety concerns for police response and investigation. DPD looks forward to working with the ambassador program in helping provide a safe environment for people enjoying downtown Denver.'

Ambassadors are also trained to engage with the area's homeless population.
'We'll have a list of resources available for those individuals, get to know them, building profiles, understanding what their needs are,' said McCarthy.

McCarthy said the group, which is funded privately through the Ballpark GID, is excited to get started in its first year in Denver.
'We have over 150 contracts around the country so it's well proven that this works,' he said.
McCarthy said the group has 18 full-time ambassadors right now and has some more positions open currently.
