Craig O'Sullivan puts seal on Cork minor success despite Cormac Spain's heroics for Waterford

The young men in red led by five points after 62 minutes but a never-say-die Déise nearly forced extra time. Top scorer Spain hopped the ball into the net but Cork sub Sam Ring hit back straight away with a green flag at the other end. On 66 minutes, Spain found the bottom corner from a close range free with a Paul Flynn-esque strike. It brought the Ballygunner hotshot's tally to 2-10 for the game and 5-50 in this year's championship. Ring won a vital free at the death however and O'Sullivan celebrated as it sailed between the posts. The number 12 finished an eventful evening with eight points (five from play) and seven wides and a total of 47 points for the season. Wing backs Michael T Brosnan and Colm Garde played starring roles for Fergal McCormack's charges. They dominated puckouts and won crucial frees. Midfielder Tom A Walsh clipped over three points from play in the first half. Substitute Ryan Dineen weighed in with two in the second period. Callum Coffey was stretchered off for the winners in the third quarter and the game was held up for six minutes. The stricken full forward re-emerged for the trophy presentation and a chant of "There's only one Callum Coffey!' coming from the jubilant Rebels. This was Cork's first provincial title at this grade since 2021. The 16-year wait goes on for Waterford. SCORERS – Cork: C O'Sullivan 0-8 (3fs), S Ring 1-0, TA Walsh 0-3, R Donovan, C Deane, E O'Shea, R Dineen 0-2 each, S Coughlan 0-1. Waterford: C Spain 2-10 (1-6fs, 1 65), D Murphy 0-2, H Quann, S Power, J Zeljkovic 0-1 each.

Powerful Déise finish secures Munster final place

Munster MHC: Waterford 1-21 Clare 1-15 Fraher Field was rocking and roaring in the last quarter as the Waterford minor hurlers finished like a train to set up a Munster final with Cork on May 16. The sides were level nine times before Cormac Spain's long range free bounced into the back of the Clare net five minutes from the end. Late points from Spain and substitutes Caoilinn Reville and Pierce Quann raised the volume levels even higher. 1-6 without reply sent the Déise through to their first provincial decider since 2021. "That last 15 minutes was heroic stuff," manager James O'Connor stated. Midfielder Jack Power put on an exhibition of high fielding that ignited the home crowd. The Ballygunner man made eight clean catches. "Jack would have that in his bag of tricks! He is a unique talent. For me, he is one of the best minors in the country. It was like stuff you saw back in the 80s and 90s! It was brilliant to watch." Power outshone Waterford top scorer Cormac Spain who finished with 1-12. Paul Rodgers, younger brother of Clare senior Mark, was a constant menace at full forward for the visitors. He shot 1-8 including a blistering second half strike. In glorious sunshine, Waterford led 10-9 after an opening half where the sides were level on seven occasions. The hosts could have been further ahead as they registered seven wides and two balls short. The score of the half came on 14 minutes when Jack Power motored forward and offloaded to Jamie Shanahan who spun around like a ballerina before he sent the ball between the uprights. Power made three terrific catches. Cormac Spain sent over five points for the Déise including two from play. Zak Phelan stuck to his task however and won two balls off the Ballygunner hot shot. Gearoid O'Shea also got two from play while Dylan Murphy nailed a beauty from the scoreboard corner. Clare had six different scorers. Paul Rodgers supplied three points. He enjoyed a great tussle with Conor Lynch on the edge of the square. Waterford goalkeeper James Comerford saved a low shot from Graham Ball in the eighth minute. Points from Spain (free), Shanahan and Shane Power made it 13-9 to the Déise within four minutes of the restart. Rodgers nailed a free in response. On 36 minutes, Rodgers was pulled back by Lynch as he tried to advance on goal. Referee Kevin O'Sullivan signalled advantage as Rodgers rifled a shot past Comerford at his near post (1-10 to 0-13). Comerford was on his toes to intercept another Clare goal chance moments later as John Barry couldn't pick out Liam Murphy. Three Rodgers frees left the visitors a goal to the good entering the final quarter (1-14 to 0-14). Clare sub James O'Donnell bore down on goal with twelve minutes left but couldn't finish from a tight angle. Two Spain frees cut the gap to one. The number thirteen then hared down the end line and flashed the ball across the face of goal and wide. The teams were tied with five minutes to go when a Spain free, from inside his own half, hopped off the surface and deceived Clare goalkeeper Leon Talty. There was only one winner after that. Stephen Frampton hails Waterford's shock win over Clare as boss Peter Queally makes his mark

AVOIDING the spotlight helped Waterford make such a bright start to their Munster SHC campaign. That is according to Stephen Frampton, who is hoping 2 Stephen Frampton hailed his former teammate Peter Queally for his leadership of Waterford 2 Waterford and Peter Queally stunned Brian Lohan's Clare in the Munster SHC semi-final Waterford have yet to qualify for the But they could hardly have dreamt of a better beginning to their 2025 bid than a toppling of the Frampton was thrilled for his former team-mate Queally, who served as a selector to predecessor read more on gaa He achieved his first aim by steering his side back to Division 1A of the National League, before going on to oversee last weekend's victory against the Banner. And ex-Waterford wing-back Frampton said: "He's been around the block with a number of teams so he's gained great experience. "It was one of those things where each time he was going for the job, there was another strong competitor there looking for it as well. "He was very unlucky in that sense but he's grabbed the bull by the horns now and he's really making a great fist of it so far." Most read in GAA Hurling Having competed in the second tier of the league, Waterford were also on a bye for the opening weekend of the Championship. Queally's charges subsequently came in somewhat under the radar, which Frampton believes stood to them when they hosted Clare at Walsh Park. Tipperary GAA legend reveals surprising difference between 'pressure' of playing for club vs county Reflecting on the eight-point win, the Ballygunner man said: "It was badly needed from a Waterford point of view. "Expectation levels going into the match were low, which is great in Waterford because we're just so hungry for success and craving it that there can be a frenzy at the start of every Championship. 'The fact that the lads played in Division 1B this year, I suppose there was less of a spotlight on the team and I think it really helped things." Frampton is keen to see Waterford make home advantage count again tomorrow when they aim for a first Championship win over Limerick since 2011. While redevelopment work was carried out at Walsh Park in 2023, the Déise played their home Championship games in Thurles. They returned to their own backyard last season, beating Cork and drawing with Tipperary. HOME FORTRESS Frampton, who served as a selector during Liam Cahill's term in charge, said: "Peter alluded to it after the game last weekend and I know when I was involved a few years ago. "We wanted to make Walsh Park an ugly place to go for teams. 'Hopefully when all the work is done it will remind me of the likes of Ennis with how tight and compact it is. The crowds are so close and it creates a massive atmosphere. 'If things aren't going well for an away team, it can probably be quite intimidating. "It would be great if we could keep creating that type of scenario in Walsh Park because it should be our fortress and it should give us an advantage. 'It certainly seemed that way last Sunday. The team gave the crowd something to shout about and they got behind the team as well."
