Two Maoists killed in encounter in Sukma
Raipur: Two Maoists including a woman were killed in an encounter in the insurgency-hit Sukma district of Bastar division in Chhattisgarh on Wednesday. One of the deceased is said to be the Local Organisation Squad (LOS) Commander of Pedaras, who was carrying a reward of Rs five lakh on his head. A joint team of Kukanar Police Station personnel and Sukma District Reserve Force jawans marched out for a search operation based on reliable intelligence inputs regarding the presence of cadres of the banned CPI Maoist outfit in the region. Sukma SP Kiran Chavan told TOI that an encounter took place between security forces and Maoists in the Pusgunna area in Kukanar region. After the exchange of fire, two Maoist bodies were recovered from the site of the encounter. During the search operation, which began around 2 pm, there were intermittent exchanges of fire between the security forces and Maoists. Preliminary identification indicates that one of the deceased is Baman, the Local Organisation Squad (LOS) Commander of Pedaras, who was carrying a reward of Rs five lakh on his head, SP said. The identity of the woman cadre is yet to be ascertained. From the site of the encounter, one INSAS rifle, one 12-bore rifle, along with other arms, ammunition, and explosive materials, were seized. Additional reinforcement teams have been deployed, and intensive search operations are going on in the surrounding dense forest areas to trace and apprehend other Maoist cadres who may have escaped taking advantage of the terrain. Further details will surface once the operation concludes and the forces return to the base camp.

The exchange of fire happened in the Pusgunna area under the Kukanar Police Station of the Sukuma district. The other body recovered from the site is of a woman cadre whose identity is yet to be ascertained, according to a statement. The security forces have also seized one INSAS rifle, one 12-bore rifle, along with other arms, ammunition, and explosive materials. The search operation launched by a joint team of Kukanar Police Station staff and Sukma DRG based on reliable intelligence inputs regarding the presence of Naxal cadres of the banned CPI Maoist outfit in the region, the statement added. Additionally, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai lauded security forces over the success of the operation. In a post on X, Vishnu Deo Sai wrote, "Police personnel and the joint police team of Sukma DRG have achieved a major success in the anti-Naxal operation in the Pusgunna area under Kukanar police station in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh. During the search operation, the jawans neutralised two naxalites in an encounter, including Pedaras LOS commander Baman, who was carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head." "Our security forces are fighting against Naxalism with full force. Congratulations to the soldiers for this success in the anti-Naxal operation," he added. This comes a day after additional superintendent of police (ASP) Akash Rao Girepunje was killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast, which was allegedly planted by Maoists in the Konta area. The Kukanar police and the district reserve guard (DRG) launched a joint search operation on Tuesday, based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the presence of CPI (Maoist) cadres in the Pusgunna forests, said a statement issued by the Bastar Police. After the gunbattle stopped, security personnel recovered the bodies of two Maoists, including a woman. The identity of the female Maoist is yet to be confirmed,' inspector general of police, Bastar Range, Sunderraj P said. The security forces also recovered one INSAS rifle, a 12-bore firearm, along with ammunition and explosive material from the site. 'Additional teams have been deployed in the surrounding dense forests to track fleeing Maoists. Intensive search operations are ongoing,' a senior officer said.
