‘Bewakuf hai kya?': Anurag Kashyap's harsh reaction when Nawazuddin Siddiqui imitated Al Pacino for Gangs of Wasseypur
Nawazuddin Siddiqui's portrayal of Faisal Khan in Gangs of Wasseypur will be forever etched in the memories of cinema lovers. But few people know that Nawaz was inclined to imitate Hollywood legend Al Pacino to bring gravitas to the performance. In a new interview, the actor revealed that director Anurag Kashyap would have none of it and had different advice for him. (Also read: Did You Know Nawazuddin Siddiqui trained Ranveer Singh for his Bollywood debut in Band Baaja Baarat?) In an interview with Filmfare, Nawaz recalled, "I went on the first day acting like Al Pacino. I had thought about emulating him beforehand. I used to have phases – Robert De Niro for three months, Al Pacino for three months, and Brando. He said, 'Bewakoof hai kya tu? (Are you stupid?) Don't do that, you will become stiff and stuck in one place." Nawaz added that he tried to use the Scarface actor to make his performance more powerful; however, Anurag had a different suggestion. 'Anurag said that vo mera kaam hai, main tere peeche 6 foot ke log khade kardunga, apne aap powerful lagega (That's my work, I will put tall men behind you, you will look powerful). Don't do anything, be normal. I couldn't sleep the whole night. I felt that he was right. The very next day, I went and forgot everything. Bhaad mein jaaye, main Nawaz hu, main jaisa dikhta hu vaisa hi jaakar karunga. (Let it go to hell. I am Nawaz, and I will act the way I feel is right" The advice clearly worked for him, as Gangs of Wasseypur became a cult classic and is still revered by the audience. Nawazuddin is currently seen in the movie Costao. He plays Costao Fernandes, a Goa customs officer who sacrifices everything to bust a gold smuggling operation. Directed by Sejal Shah, the biographical drama also stars Priya Bapat, Kishore, Hussain Dalal, and Mahika Sharma in key roles. The film is streaming on ZEE5.

Salman Khan's THIS Co-Star Trained Ranveer Singh For His Bollywood Debut
Last Updated: The actor mentioned that Ranveer Singh already had the skills needed to be an actor. He just learnt how to use them. Ranveer Singh made a stellar debut with Anushka Sharma in Band Baaja Baarat. His debut role was a breakthrough role that put him on the map. In a recent chat with Pinkvilla, Nawazuddin Siddiqui revealed that he trained Ranveer in his workshop. However, the Kick actor maintained that Ranveer had his capabilities and only needed to learn how to use those skills. Nawazuddin Siddiqui said, 'I trained Ranveer for a while for his role in Band Baaja Baarat, and in one sense, I had become the 'workshop guy'. I used to say that whoever wants to be an actor and get launched, I am there for you. Even though he was in the workshop, I don't believe you actually teach acting; he had his own capabilities. All I did was show him several ways to use that skill, but at the end of the day, the person has to do it themselves." Although Ranveer Singh became popular after the film's release, very few people had faith in him before his debut. In an earlier episode of Koffee With Karan, Karan Johar recalled how he was not convinced by Aditya Chopra's decision to launch Ranveer. He said, 'I was meeting Yash uncle (Yash Chopra) for lunch. So some assistant directors were playing table tennis. Aditya Chopra pointed out that one of those boys is not AD; he is the boy who is starring in Band Baaja Baaraat. I said, 'Who?'" 'I saw the poster of the film, and I told them that they have to change this poster. I was like, 'I have no hope. I'm not going to go and see this film because Aditya never calls me for any previews anymore. I went to see this film, and I was like, 'Oh my god. He's a movie star,'" Karan added. Today, Ranveer Singh is among the top actors in India. He is currently shooting for Dhurandhar. He also has Farhan Akhtar's Don 3 in the pipeline. As Nawazuddin Siddiqui, he has proven his acting chops time and again and has worked with actors like Salman Khan, Varun Dhawan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan. He was recently seen in Costao and was lauded for his performance. First Published:

Did You Know Nawazuddin Siddiqui trained Ranveer Singh for his Bollywood debut in Band Baaja Baarat?
Nawazuddin Siddiqui has carved a niche for himself with his outstanding performances in some of the most memorable films and series. But do you know the Gangs of Wasseypur star has also worked as an acting coach and helped none-other-than Ranveer Singh for his Bollywood debut? In an interview with Pinkvilla, Nawazuddin opened up about his acting journey where he talked about his life before and after the super success of Anurag Kashyap's 2012 film Gangs of Wasseypur. When asked if he had trained Ranveer Singh for Band Baaja Baarat in 2010, the actor replied, "For some time, yes, I had trained him. I had become a guy who would take workshops often. If someone wanted to become an actor and get launched, I was the go-to person." However, asked if he would take the credit for Ranveer Singh's skill as a brilliant actor, Nawazuddin has this to say: "Ranveer Singh is a very good actor. Acting can't be taught. It's not some magic potion. You have to discover it within yourself. He (Ranveer) had his own talent. Yes, you can be shown different ways to approach, but eventually, you have to walk it yourself," the actor added. Nawazuddin is currently seen in the movie Costao. He plays the role of Costao Fernandes, a Goa customs officer who sacrificed everything to bust a gold smuggling operation. Directed by Sejal Shah, the biographical drama also stars Priya Bapat, Kishore, Hussain Dalal, and Mahika Sharma in key roles. The film is streaming on ZEE5. Ranveer, on the other hand, is busy shooting for Aditya Dhar's film Dhurandhar. It is a spy thriller set against the backdrop of Indian intelligence agencies, where Ranveer is reportedly playing a R&AW agent. The film also stars Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal and Akshaye Khanna.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui recalls training Ranveer Singh for Band Baaja Baaraat: ‘He had his own capabilities, I showed him several ways to use that skill'
Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui has made a name for himself with incredibly layered roles and he is now branching out as a producer as well. Interestingly, apart from being an actor and producer, Nawaz has contributed to Bollywood as an acting coach as well. He recently revealed in an interview that he helped Ranveer Singh before his debut film Band Baaja Baarat, a role that made Ranveer a household name almost overnight. While making an appearance on Pinkvilla's YouTube channel, Nawaz talked about his career in detail and shared anecdotes from several parts of his life in the industry. A notable chapter had the Gangs of Wasseypur actor helping young actors to prepare for auditions and roles in Bollywood. Among the many he trained in his workshops, he also trained Ranveer Singh. 'I trained Ranveer for a while for his role in Band Baaja Baarat, and in one sense, I had become the 'workshop guy'. I used to say that whoever wants to be an actor and get launched, I am there for you. Even though he was in the workshop, I don't believe you actually teach acting; he had his own capabilities. All I did was show him several ways to use that skill, but at the end of the day, the person has to do it themselves.' While talking about acting workshops and acting schools, Nawaz noted that every time a film with a new flavour or a twist comes along, it always has theatre artists in it. 'Places like NSD have a huge part to play in whatever our industry is today, and all realistic movies have actors who have come from these institutions.' As mentioned before, Band Baaja Baarat put Ranveer Singh on the map, but even though he was trained by Nawaz, there was a time when his casting as the protagonist was not supported by many. Director Karan Johar had actually advised producer Aditya Chopra not to cast Ranveer in the film. In an episode of Koffee With Karan, the director recalled the story and shared that he thought Ranveer was an assistant director on the film. 'I was meeting Yash uncle (Yash Chopra) for lunch. So some assistant directors were playing table tennis. Aditya Chopra pointed out that one of those boys is not AD; he is the boy who is starring in Band Baaja Baaraat. I said, 'Who?'' Karan admitted that even though Aditya was hopeful regarding Ranveer, he had no hopes for the film even after the shooting was completed and posters were released. 'I saw the poster of the film, and I told them that they have to change this poster. I was like, 'I have no hope. I'm not going to go and see this film because Aditya never calls me for any previews anymore. I went to see this film, and I was like, 'Oh my god. He's a movie star,'' added Karan. Since then, Karan and Ranveer's relationship has only blossomed, and it even led to the blockbuster film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahanni (2023). The film also starred Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi.
