India expresses dismay over Durga Temple demolition in Dhaka

New Delhi: India has expressed dismay over Bangladesh Muhammad Yunus-led interim government's decision to allow demolition of a makeshift Durga Temple in Khilkhet in Dhaka, saying that the governnment instead of providing security to the temple, projected the episode as illegal land use and allowed the destruction of the temple. Addressing a weekly media briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the action has resulted in damage to the deity before it was shifted. When asked about Temple demolition in Bangladesh, he said, "We understand that extremists were clamouring for demolishing the Durga temple in Khilkhet, Dhaka. The interim government, instead of providing security to the temple, projected the episode as illegal land use allowing and they allowed the destruction of the temple today." "This has resulted in damage to the deity before it was shifted. We are dismayed that such incidents continue to recur in Bangladesh. Let me underline that it is the responsibility of the interim government of Bangladesh to protect Hindus, their properties, and religious institutions," he added. Bangladesh Railway authorities on Thursday demolished a makeshift Durga Temple constructed on its land in Dhaka's Khilkhet. The temple was demolished three days after a mob demanded the removal of the temple. The Bangladesh Railway authorities said that they demolished Khilkhet Sarbojanin Shri Shri Durga Mandir as it was constructed illegally on railway land. The decision of the authorities has been condemned by several minority organisations, alleging that the authorities demolished the temple without providing prior notice to the community people. The temple committee members alleged that a mob of more than 500 people, with sticks, took position in the temple while the worshippers were staying in the temple at about 9 pm (local time) on Monday, Bangladesh-based newspaper New Age reported. They alleged that the railway authorities only demolished the temple while all other establishments remained untouched. Speaking to New Age, the committee secretary Arjun Roy said that they took permission from the railway authorities to celebrate Durga puja there in the past year and to use the place for their worshipping temporarily. He further said, "But the authorities demolished everything today without giving us a prior notice. We are very disheartened over the incident." Speaking to New Age, Bangladesh Railway's Dhaka divisional estate officer Md Nasir Uddin Mahmud said that the demolition of the temple and other illegal establishments began at about 10 am(local time). According to him, a number of establishments were built on the railway's land illegally and they came to know regarding the makeshift temple on Monday. Md Nasir Uddin Mahmud stated that the temple's committee did not take permission from the uahtorites, New Age reported. The Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, the Mahanagor Sarbojanin Puja Committee, and the Minority Rights Movement in separate statements condemned the mob incident and the demolition of the temple.

India denounces demolition of Hindu temple in Dhaka, says dismayed that such incidents continue to recur

New Delhi, June 26 (UNI) India today denounced the demolition of a Hindu temple in Dhaka following pressure from an Islamist mob, saying it is the responsibility of the Interim Government in Dhaka to provide security to the temple. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in his media briefing, said that India is dismayed that such incidents continue to recur in Bangladesh. 'We understand that extremists were clamouring for demolishing the Durga temple in Khilkhet, Dhaka. 'The interim government, instead of providing security to the temple, projected the episode as illegal land use … and they allowed the destruction of the temple today. 'This has resulted in damage to the deity before it was shifted. 'We are dismayed that such incidents continue to recur in Bangladesh. Let me underline that it is the responsibility of the interim government of Bangladesh to protect Hindus, their properties, and religious institutions.' According to reports, a Durga Mandir in Dhaka was demolished by the administration today, days after a large mob of Islamists threatened to bring it down. The Khilkhet Sarbajanin Durga Mandir was demolished based on an order issued by the Bangladesh Railway's Dhaka Division Deputy Commissioner and Divisional Estate Officer. The idols in the temple, puja materials and other items in the temple were destroyed in the operation. To another question on trade issues with Bangladesh, the spokesperson said: 'The trade-related amendments announced by India in respect of Bangladesh were based on Bangladesh's own quest for fairness, equal treatment, and reciprocity. We await resolution of the underlying issues pending with the Bangladeshi side for a long time. These issues have been raised by India at several structured meetings earlier, including at the Commerce Secretary level talks.' To a question whether the two countries are renegotiating the Ganga waters treaty, the spokesperson said that India and Bangladesh share 54 rivers, which also includes the Ganga. 'To discuss all relevant issues that form part of this cooperation, the two countries have bilateral mechanism in place, which is the Joint Rivers Commission. We also have consultations of concerned state governments, representatives in our own internal consultations on such issues to frame our approach. We are prepared to engage with Bangladesh on all matters in an environment that is conducive for mutually beneficial dialogue.' UNI RN

Eid-ul-Adha 2025: Bangladesh Railway opens advance ticket sales for Bakrid travel

As Eid-ul-Adha approaches, the festive rush has officially begun and so has the scramble to secure a train ticket home. To make travel smoother this year, Bangladesh Railway kicked off advance ticket sales on May 25 morning for journeys scheduled on June 04, 2025, marking the start of the pre-Eid travel season. In a move aimed at reducing long queues and improving convenience, the railway authorities have gone fully digital this year: 100% of regular intercity train tickets are now available online, with no sales at station counters for these services. Ticket sales for passengers traveling to the Western region began promptly at 8 am while sales for the Eastern region went live at 2 pm. To meet the massive demand during the holiday season, ten special Eid trains will be in operation across five routes, running in two phases — from June 04 to June 06 and again from June 09 to June 14, 2025. Some of these services will even run on Eid-ul-Adha day itself. Unlike regular trains, however, tickets for special Eid trains will only be available at station counters so travellers eyeing these routes will need to plan an in-person visit. This Eid-ul-Adha season, a total of 43 intercity trains will be running across the country, offering around 33,315 seats. Additionally, 25% of each train's capacity will be reserved for standing tickets, which will be sold only at station counters. For added flexibility, each passenger is allowed to purchase up to four tickets per transaction but do take note: tickets bought in advance are non-refundable. So if you are planning your Eid-ul-Adha getaway by rail, now is the time to grab your tickets and lock in your seat. On May 06, 2025, the Council of Advisers greenlit a 10-day public holiday for Eid-ul-Adha, beginning on June 05. With ample time off and a robust travel schedule in place, it is shaping up to be one of the smoothest Eid-ul-Adha journeys in recent memory. Whether you are heading home to reunite with family or planning a peaceful escape, Bangladesh Railway is helping make your Eid-ul-Adha journey a little easier this year — one online ticket at a time.
