DC faces lawsuit for inadequate pedestrian signals for the blind
WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — For most people, crossing the street in the District means looking out for turning cars or bikes. But for the visually impared, alerts and vibrations at the crosswalk are lifesaving. It's a warning when it's safe to step off the sidewalk. There's now a new class-action lawsuit accusing the District of failing to do enough to keep everyone safe. When you press the button as a crosswalk and hear a voice say 'wait,' or 'walk sign is on to cross M Street,' that's an accessible pedestrian signal (APS). They help blind people like Qudsiya Naqui get around safely. 'A lot of the times, the APS are placed in the wrong place, or they're not working at all, or they're not there at all. And sometimes they're too quiet, so I can't hear them,' Naqui said. Dupont Circle park to be closed this weekend during WorldPride That's why she and four others are suing D.C. There are visual pedestrian signals at more than 1,600 intersections, but Naqui says only a fraction have accessible pedestrian signals. 'We're trained to listen for parallel traffic and to listen to traffic patterns. That's kind of how we get around,' Naqui said. 'But in D.C., that can be extra challenging because of the complexities of the streets.' At the intersection of 14th Street and New York Avenue NW, most of the buttons are covered, and the one that isn't doesn't work. 'Some of our plaintiffs have had really scary close calls where they've started to cross the street and somebody has had to pull them back,' said attorney Kaitlin Banner. 'We even have one of our clients whose cane was hit by a car when she was trying to cross the street where there was no accessible pedestrian signals.' Naqui said she'll often choose a route that's all perpendicular streets. It's easier to navigate but costs her a 'time tax.' 'Sometimes those routes avoiding the diagonal streets, avoiding the circles can take me up to double as long to walk,' Naqui said. It's not just inconvenient, but Banner said it violates federal and local law. 'We hope that with this lawsuit, we can work together with the district to make sure that we have safe intersections for people who live here, people who travel here, people who visit here,' Banner said. This lawsuit follows similar successful lawsuits in New York City and Chicago. Both cities were found to be in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and ordered to install thousands of new accessible pedestrian signals. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Clare clinch minor hurling last-four spot with win over Galway
Clare 2-21 Galway 2-13 An eight-point victory didn't flatter Clare, as they got their second knockout win in eight days to reach the last four of the All Ireland Minor Hurling Championship. Despite falling four behind 90 seconds into the second period, this Clare side expertly turned the tide and defended quite well, to limit Galway to just a point for the remainder. Powered on by the likes of Dara Kennedy and Jack O'Halloran in defence, the class of Ian O'Brien, Liam Murphy and sharpshooter Paul Rodgers pushed them past the winning post with something to spare. Galway, for their part, contributed to a decent contest, and it certainly was a game when they played, wind assisted in the opening half. Having lost the Leinster final, this was their road back but the Banner bump sees them dumped out. A fine start by Kenneth Burkes charges saw Galway lead 0-5 to 0-2 early on with Gus Lohan and Ronan Cahalan making some early contributions in attack. However, Clare, who finished third in Munster, were able to get back level when a piledriver from Rory Ralph saw the first green flag after 13 minutes. Clare really had momentum and O'Brien added two points, one after a smart Cathal Mannion save. Galway needed something and a surge before half-time got them back in front. First a Jack Shaughnessy free was cancelled out by a beautiful Paul Rodgers sideline cut. But next, a Galway goal. Superb vision from Tadgh Mac Cártaigh found Cahalan in acres of space, allowing him to rattle the net. Frees at either end late in the half meant Galway led 1-12 to 1-11 at half-time. A penalty from the first play of the second period went to Galway. Shaughnessy saw it saved but sharp to the rebound was Mac Cártaigh who found a way past Leon Talty. This could have kick started Galway's challenge. However, Clare shrugged it off and were within a point on 48 minutes, as Ben Talty clipped over. They went ahead through a goal from Liam Murphy who danced past his man. The same man got two of the final six points to set up an exciting looking last four clash with the Rebels, next weekend. Galway's failure to score a point from play in the second half will show possibly how short they fell, but Cahalan and Cillian Roche were denied late consolation goals by the post and keeper, respectfully. Mark Ruffalo to reprise his role as Bruce Banner bringing Hulk to Spider-Man: Brand New Day: Reports
Mark Ruffalo is set to return as Bruce Banner in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, according to exclusive reports from Nexus Point News. The actor's yet to be confirmed return, marks his tenth appearance in a mainline Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project. While the details of his character's role in the upcoming film remain under wraps, it's confirmed that Ruffalo will play a significant part, far beyond a mere cameo. It's still unclear whether Banner will transform into his green alter ego, the Hulk, or remain in his Professor Hulk form, but his role will likely provide mentorship to Spider-Man's Peter Parker. Ruffalo's last portrayal of Banner was in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, where his character was involved in a storyline that saw his cousin, Jennifer Walters, transform into She-Hulk after being exposed to his blood. Banner, still in his Professor Hulk persona, helped Walters control her powers, and later appeared with his son Skaar in the series finale. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be the fourth film in the MCU's Spider-Man series, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), with a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Tom Holland will reprise his role as Spider-Man, with Zendaya and Jacob Batalon returning in supporting roles. Michael Mando is also reportedly in talks to return as Mac Gargan. The film, set to be released on July 31, 2026, will begin filming in late July in London, with production expected to wrap in the Fall. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is part of Phase 6 of the MCU and will follow Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
