Joachim (fifth from right) presenting a souvenir to Tun Musa during the visit.-Information Department photo KOTA KINABALU (May 14): Seven events have been organized in conjunction with the 72nd Official Birthday Celebration of the Governor of Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, starting from June 14. Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who is also the chairman of the Main Celebration Committee, stated that related programs have been arranged to enliven the occasion. 'This year, we only have seven events or seven programs, which we hold annually. 'The first will be a tea party with special-needs children on June 14. 'After that, on June 15, we will hold Sabah Ethnic Day. We believe that Tun, as the Governor, is the umbrella for all the people of Sabah, so this event is to celebrate everyone in Sabah. 'Following that, on June 19, there will be a tahlil (prayer recitation) and thanksgiving ceremony. As usual, on June 21, we will hold the official parade ceremony, the Conferment of Sabah State Awards, Honors and Medals, and the State Banquet in the evening,' he told the media after paying a courtesy visit to Tun Musa at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Wednesday. He added that the Sabah Ethnic Day Celebration, scheduled to take place at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), is expected to bring together nearly all ethnic groups in the state, with an estimated attendance of over 1,000 visitors. Also present were Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Isnin Aliasnih, Kota Kinabalu City Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah and director of the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department, Datuk Jumain Abdul Ghani.

40 years of The Banquet

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A Sioux Falls nonprofit that serves free meals to the community is 40 years old this year. The Banquet opened its doors in June of 1985. Connecting resources on MMIP Day 'It was just a group of people from a variety of walks in our region that realized there was a need in Sioux Falls for some type of feeding ministry, but even more importantly, there was a need in our community to have a way for people to give back,' The Banquet Executive Director Tamera Jerke-Liesinger said. KELOLAND News took viewers inside the Banquet back in November of 1985 as guests enjoyed a hot meal. A mom eating with her son explained just how helpful the service was for families. 'Gives the mothers a break, where you don't have to fix meals and stuff. It helps on food at home,' a guest told KELOLAND News in 1985. 40 years later, the Banquet is still filling different needs for people. Kayla Beitelspacher lives with cerebral palsy, and says the Banquet helps her remain independent and live in her own home. 'This place makes it easier for me not to have to cook,' Beitelspacher said. The Sioux Falls woman also enjoys the company. 'It's a place to come eat and fellowship and get to know new people,' Beitelspacher said. From people seeking fellowship to the homeless, guests come to the Banquet for many different reasons. 'We're serving working poor families that are doing their best to pay their rent, make sure their kids are at school, put gas in their car, but by the time they do all that stuff, putting a nutritious meal on the table is virtually impossible,' Jerke-Liesinger said. When the Banquet launched 40 years ago, it served one meal a week, but more meals were added over time. 'If people are hungry one day a week, it stands to reason they're hungry more days of the week,' Jerke-Liesinger said. Today the Banquet serves 16 meals a week between its two locations. Volunteer Don Snowberger has seen much of the growth and changes over the years at the Banquet. He's been with the organization for 37 years, first as an employee and now as a volunteer. He does tasks like washing dishes and mopping the floors. 'If you're down here, especially for breakfast, it's like family. I know some of the people on a first name basis, they talk to me. I'm usually at the dishwashing window and it's like family,' Snowberger said. Volunteers play a critical role at the Banquet. 'The volunteers are all of it. Every single one of these meals is prepared by and served by volunteer groups. The majority of the meals are even paid for by the volunteer groups, so the Banquet ministry does not happen without that volunteer,' Jerke-Liesinger said. The Banquet officially hits the 40 year mark on June 17th. 'When you think about a humble beginning in a really small building with a very small kitchen and 60 people showed up that first night. When you think over 40 years later we're serving 1,000 meals a day some days, that's pretty incredible,' Jerke Liesinger said. The Banquet first opened at a location on Main Avenue across from the downtown library. Today, it has locations on East 8th Street and on North Marion Road. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Bloc Party announce 20th anniversary reissue of Silent Alarm

Bloc Party have announced a special 20th anniversary reissue of 'Silent Alarm'. The 'Banquet' hitmakers released their debut album - which peaked at number three in the UK charts - in February 2005, and two decades later they're preparing to drop a four LP box set packed with rare tracks on September 26. As well as the original album, the collection will include B-sides and rarities, as well as a 2004 BBC Radio 1 John Peel session and seven demo tracks. There will also be a two CD reissue and double LP repress. In 2018, the group announce plans to hit the road around the world performing the record in full for the first time, and they're set to repeat that later this year. In January, frontman Kele Okereke opened up how it felt to be revisiting the album. He told Billboard: 'It's nice to be able to go back and listen to those records, and to remember where I was when I wrote them, the conversations that I was having and the people that were in my life. 'That's the stuff that comes back to me when I go back to these songs and I don't really do that so often. 'I had to do it for 'Silent Alarm' as I had to relearn the songs. "I've always been obsessed with looking forward, but I am recognizing that we've done something quite good and it's nice to bask in that sometimes.' Before their debut album dropped, Bloc Party had started building up an "underground" reputation for themselves thanks to singles and EPs, but they were determined to "strive further than what people were expecting" with the first full length. Kele added: "We knew it had to be expansive and there was this fear that we might be pushing it too far when we were in the studio, but we didn't succumb to that, and I'm glad that we managed to express what we wanted to express. "I'm glad that it worked and we made the best record we could, because it has stood the test of time."

XENIA, Ohio (WDTN) — The city of Xenia is honoring their fire chief as he prepares to retire. Fire and EMS Chief Kenneth E. Riggsby is retiring after 42 years of public service. During the Xenia City Council meeting on April 24, the city honored Riggsby through the unanimous passing of a resolution expressing appreciation for everything he's done for the community. Riggsby is a graduate of Xenia High School, who began his firefighting career as a volunteer firefighter for the Xenia Township Fire Department. He joined the Xenia Fire Division in 1983, ascending the ranks to eventually become chief in 2011. Xenia leaders commend Riggsby for his role in modernizing dispatch systems, improving staffing levels and launching the Division's first Fire Officers Academy in 2018. In recognition of his leadership, the city renamed its Outstanding Leadership Award in his honor. The 'Kenneth Riggsby Outstanding Leadership Award' was presented to him at the Fire & EMS Division's Awards Banquet on March 19, 2025. 'Chief Riggsby has been an exceptional leader whose commitment to this community and to his colleagues has never wavered,' said City Manager Brent Merriman. 'His thoughtful leadership and institutional knowledge have guided the Fire & EMS Division through times of both progress and adversity. His legacy will be felt for years to come.'
