Madrid makes debut as Imola dropped from 2026

The race in Madrid will run on a new 5.47km circuit around the Ifema exhibition centre between the Spanish capital and Barajas airport [Getty Images] The new Madrid Grand Prix will be held as the final race of an uninterrupted European section of the Formula 1 season next year. Madrid, to be held on 11-13 September, will be a second race in Spain and replaces the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola in Italy in a schedule that remains at 24 races. Advertisement Madrid's debut is one of a number of changes, most of which have been made in an attempt to streamline transport and reduce carbon emissions. Canada, traditionally held in early June, has moved to 22-24 May, the date that would have been expected to be filled by Monaco, which will now be held on 5-7 June. The switch ensures that Canada follows the Miami race on 1-3 May, creating what F1 describes as "significant freight efficiencies as some equipment can move directly from one to the other". Every race from Monaco on the first weekend in June to Madrid is then in Europe, before the Azerbaijan event on 25-27 September kicks off the final intercontinental part of the season. Advertisement The moves are in line with F1's new rules, in which revised engines run on 100% sustainable fuels. The season starts in Melbourne, Australia, on 6-8 March. The Bahrain Grand Prix, which has become the most common opening race, is again in April as a result of the timing of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Bahrain and the Saudi Arabian race will be held a week apart, but unlike this year there is a two-week gap between the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix in March after Australia, rather than the one of this season. The British Grand Prix will be held on 3-5 July, and the season will mark the final appearance of the Dutch Grand Prix. It will be held at Zandvoort on 21-23 August. Advertisement The traditional Spanish race at Barcelona retains its place on 12-14 June as it fulfils the last year of its existing contract. The season ends with two groups of three races on consecutive weekends - the US Grand Prix in Austin on 23-25 October followed by Mexico and Brazil, and then the Las Vegas Grand Prix on 19-21 November followed by Qatar and Abu Dhabi, which brings the season to a close on 4-6 December. 2026 F1 calendar Australia - 6-8 March China - 13-15 March Japan - 27-29 March Bahrain - 10-12 April Saudi Arabia - 17-19 April Miami - 1-3 May Canada - 22-24 May Monaco - 5-7 June Spain (Barcelona) - 12-14 June Advertisement Austria - 26-28 June Great Britain - 3-5 July Belgium - 17-19 July Hungary - 24-26 July Netherlands - 21-23 August Italy - 4-6 September Spain (Madrid) - 11-13 September Azerbaijan - 25-27 September Singapore - 9-11 October United States (Austin) - 23-25 October Mexico - 30 October-1 November Brazil - 6-8 November Las Vegas - 19-21 November Qatar - 27-29 November Abu Dhabi - 4-6 December

In Spain, soaring rents force hundreds of homeless to seek refuge at Madrid airport

Victor Fernando Meza works during the day, but his salary is not enough to afford rent in the Spanish capital Madrid. So, once again, the 45-year-old Peruvian will spend the night at the airport. Advertisement On a sweltering May evening, Meza arrived at Barajas airport before 9pm - just in time to get past security. Any later, and people without a boarding pass are not allowed in under a new policy implemented a week ago to deter the hundreds of homeless people staying overnight. The measure aims to address the rising number of people sleeping in Spain's busiest airport – a situation thrust into the spotlight by images showing rows of people lying on the floor among bags and shopping trolleys, sparking a blame game between government officials. Those who call Barajas home say the increased scrutiny in Europe's fifth busiest airport is unwelcome. Homeless people lay on the floor of Terminal 4 of the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport in Madrid. Missing Mother of 6 Among Bodies Found Dead in Homeless Encampment

Police said the bodies of two people were discovered inside a tent in the Westlake district of Los Angeles on Monday, May 12 The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed one of the victims as Lucrecia Macias Barajas, a mother of six 'It devastated us,' one of Barajas' daughters said about their motherA mother of six children who went missing for several days is among the victims found dead inside a tent at a California homeless encampment, authorities said. The discovery happened on Monday, May 12, at the 1200 block of Huntley Drive near the 110 Freeway in the Westlake district of Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Times reported. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed in an email to PEOPLE on Friday, May 16, that one of the deceased victims was Lucrecia Macias Barajas, 46. The medical examiner's office said the other victim was a male in his 30s. He has not yet been identified pending notification of next of kin. is now available in the Apple App Store! Barajas' daughters told CW affiliate KTLA that their loved one was a mother of six children and an Army veteran. 'My sister, she called to tell us that she found our mom dead,' Amely Becerra, one of Barajas's daughters, told the outlet. 'It devastated us. We didn't understand how it happened.' Barajas was reportedly missing for several days and her family was unable to reach her, per KTLA. They were able to trace Barajas's cell phone signal to the location of the tent. NBC affiliate KNBC shared footage posted on Instagram showing two of Barajas' children breaking down upon discovering their mother's body in the tent, which was reportedly locked from the inside. A GoFundMe was established on behalf of Barajas' family so they could bury their mother next to her father in Nicaragua. 'Those of you who knew Lucre know very well that she would give the food out of her mouth to make sure you had a bite to eat,' the organizer wrote in the description. They added, 'She loved wholeheartedly and was selfless, caring, loving. She left us all too soon and it is a shame to lose such a wonderful human being. Not only because she was our sister but because she was a saint to whoever got to meet her.' Residents who live in the vicinity described the encampment as a drive-through for drugs, KNBC reported, adding that neighbors have contacted the city a number of times about it but to no avail. 'I want people to know she wasn't a homeless drug addict, because that's not true,' Becerra told KTLA. 'Some people are coming to that conclusion and that's not fair. She was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.' On the same day of the discovery of the two bodies, California Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled a model ordinance for cities and counties 'to immediately address dangerous and unhealthy encampments' and help connect people experiencing homelessness to shelter and services. The ordinance would include banning persistent camping in one location and prohibiting encampments that block free passage on sidewalks. PEOPLE contacted the LAPD and the GoFundMe organizer for additional information on Friday. Read the original article on People

Warning as Madrid restricts access to airport

Madrid 's airport is restricting access during off-peak hours to address the growing issue of homeless people seeking shelter in its terminals. Spain 's airport authority, AENA, announced the new measures on Wednesday night. It said that only travellers with boarding passes, airport employees, and those accompanying ticketed passengers will be allowed entry to Barajas during periods with limited flight activity. The move comes after months of increasing numbers of homeless people, reportedly in the hundreds, setting up encampments within the terminals, often near walls and bathrooms. AENA said it had asked Madrid city officials for help in addressing the problem months ago, but had received little help so far. 'Airports are not places designed for living in, but rather are infrastructure solely for transit, which in no case offers adequate conditions for overnight stays,' AENA said in a statement issued on Wednesday. A political blame game between authorities at different levels of government has left the issue largely unaddressed before the peak summer travel season. Spain received a record 94 million international tourists in 2024. It is the most popular overseas destination for people in the UK. However, earlier this month, Jet2 's CEO Steve Heapy warned of a growing reluctance among British holidaymakers to visit Spain due to anti-tourism protests. Mr Heapy noted a growing "perception" that some Spanish residents resent the influx of tourists. In recent years, several Spanish cities popular with tourists have seen demonstrations by locals protesting the impact of tourism, particularly on rental costs. Protest banners have displayed slogans such as "tourists go home", contributing to the negative perception among potential visitors. Mr Heapy said: 'We've had people ringing the call centre and going into travel agents, asking questions like 'is Spain safe', 'are we still welcome in the resort'.' He went on: 'It is becoming a big issue unfortunately, and perception becomes truth.' Mr Heapy said 'unlicensed tourism' – such as people staying in private accommodation listed on Airbnb – is 'causing a huge problem' and 'needs to be controlled'. Issues such as uncertainty over visitor numbers, unpaid tourist taxes and properties that 'could be death traps' are among the issues, he said.

Family devastated after missing mother found dead at L.A. homeless encampment

Family members are devastated after a missing woman was one of two people who were found dead at a homeless encampment in the Westlake district of Los Angeles. On May 12, Lucrecia Macias Barajas, 46, was found dead inside a sidewalk tent that had reportedly been locked from the inside. The body of her male friend, whose identity was not released by the L.A. County Medical Examiner's office, was also found at the scene. Neighbors said at least one of the bodies had been partially eaten by dogs. The grisly discovery was found at an encampment along Huntley Circle near downtown L.A. After Barajas had been missing for several days and family members had been unable to reach her, they eventually traced her cell phone signal to the tent where her body was found. Video of the scene showed one of her daughters wailing with grief outside the tent. 'My sister, she called to tell us that she found our mom dead,' said Amely Becerra, the victim's daughter. 'It devastated us. We didn't understand how it happened.' Her daughters said she was an Army veteran and a loving mother of six children with whom they had just spent time over the weekend. 'I want people to know she wasn't a homeless drug addict, because that's not true,' Becerra said. 'Some people are coming to that conclusion and that's not fair. She was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.' A resident who lives near the encampment said they were distraught to learn of the bodies being found. 'When I heard her harrowing screams, it shook us all to our core,' the resident, who did not wish to be identified, told KTLA. 'We all just started shaking because we absolutely knew someone was dead outside.' The homeless encampment has remained a chronic issue for many nearby residents, who say the area attracts criminal activity, drug use, safety hazards and even unruly animals. One neighbor said that his dogs were attacked by animals living in the encampment. When he tried reporting it, he claims the Los Angeles Police Department told him there was nothing they could do about it. 'This place has been a danger zone,' the man said. 'People don't feel safe, and nothing is ever done to clear it for good.' Neighbors said the area has been neglected by city officials and despite repeated complaints, nothing is being done to curb the growing problems. 'The neighbors complained about the dogs that were in this situation, the encampments,' said Raul Claros, founder of California Rising. 'The city did nothing and we feel that these two individuals would still be alive if those encampments weren't there.' Another resident said that power had been illegally hooked up at the encampment for months and that despite a fatal RV fire in January, the site continues to be occupied. L.A. Mayor Karen Bass sent KTLA a statement on the incident, saying, 'This case reinforces our urgent need to address this grave humanitarian crisis. We will continue collaborating with the council office to bring more Angelenos inside and do all that we can to improve public safety.' The cause of death for Barajas and the unidentified man remains under investigation. A GoFundMe page to help Barajas' family with funeral expenses can be found here.
