Russian diesel still flowing to Syria on US-sanctioned tankers: Data
A second tanker under US sanctions is moored near the Syrian port of Banias and may deliver a diesel cargo from Russia, data shows, as Moscow and Damascus strengthen ties. Moscow backed former Syrian autocrat Bashar al-Assad during more than a decade of civil war in Syria, but wants to improve relations with the new interim leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, as Russia wants to retain the use of its two military bases in the country. According to LSEG data, the Barbados-flagged Proxima, with around 30,000 metric tons of diesel departed from Primorsk in February and is drifting near Banias, as it waits to discharge its cargo. The Proxima was placed under US sanctions on January 10, along with around 180 other vessels. Last week, the tanker Prosperity, also under US sanctions, arrived in Syria's coastal waters, carrying about 37,000 metric tons of diesel loaded in the Russian Baltic port of Primorsk. Both tankers turned off their ship tracking devices on arrival, concealing their operations, shipping data shows. Recently, Syria received a new shipment of its local currency printed in Russia and more shipments were expected in the future in another sign of improving ties between Moscow and Syria's new rulers. Western countries, including the US, EU and Britain are also easing sanctions pressure on Syria.

Kyiv: Russian strike on Ukraine's Odesa port kills four
KYIV: A Russian ballistic missile strike overnight on the southern Ukrainian port city of Odesa killed four people and damaged a Barbados-flagged cargo ship, Ukrainian authorities said Wednesday. The attack late Tuesday came as Ukraine endorsed an American proposal for a 30-day ceasefire and agreed to immediate negotiations with Russia. Ukrainian officials said the attack occurred as the cargo ship was being loaded with a grain consignment intended to be sent to Algeria. 'Unfortunately, four people died – citizens of Syria. The youngest victim was 18, the oldest was 24 years old. Two more people were wounded – a Ukrainian and a Syrian,' Oleksiy Kuleba, vice prime minister for reconstruction wrote on social media. 'Russia is attacking Ukraine's infrastructure, including ports that are involved in ensuring the world's food security,' he added. Separately, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region said a 47-year-old woman was killed during a Russian missile attack on the central city of Kryvyi Rig, the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainian air force said that in total Russia had launched three missiles at the war-battered country overnight as well as 133 drones of various types, including the Iranian-designed Shahed-type attack drone. Its air defense units shot down 98 of the drones, the air force added.

ALBAWABA - Four Syrians were killed in a Russian missile attack that targeted Odessa on Tuesday night, a Ukrainian official said and added that the airstrike also hit a Barbados-flagged ship in the southern city's port, a Ukrainian official said.
