It also helped create communal spaces in Black communities that hosted intimate fellowship events like dinners, picnics, and lunches. This lifestyle was upended during the destabilization of Black Farmers and the Great Migration when many Black families were separated, as some left their land and their family obligations or even sold their land to move north in search of better opportunities. Prior to and during the early years of the Great Migration (1910–1970), Black farmers made up a significant portion of the agricultural industry, accounting for 14% of all U.S. farmers by 1920. However, discriminatory policies, land dispossession, systemic racism, and the Great Depression led to this decline, with Black Farmers making up less than 2% by 1970, owning only a few million acres. Coordinated efforts, including targeted policies and programs, encouraged this shift, promising economic advancement that was often met with new systemic challenges tied to urban living. Lebanon County Prothonotary opening on Saturday, March 22 for passport applications
The Lebanon County Prothonotary's office will hold another Passport Acceptance Day Saturday, March 22, for residents looking to apply for a passport. The prothonotary's office, located that the Lebanon County Municipal Building in Room 104, will be open from 8 a.m. till noon. This is the fifth time the office has hosted a passport day on the weekend for residents. Prothonotary Barbara Smith said the event receives a lot of positive comments from the public, as keeping the office open on the weekend helps those who have issues during the week like schedule conflicts, work or children in school. "It's just a walk-in, no appointment necessary," she said, adding that "the entire prothonotary's office will be there, plus someone with the clerk of courts (office) and we'd have two interpreters also for the Hispanic speaking population." The Lebanon County Sheriff's Office will also be open on March 22 for security purposes to the building, and the office staff will be processing applications for the Pennsylvania license to carry firearms permit. All residents applying for a passport must appear in person, and bring the following: A passport application, which is available in the prothonotary's office, filled out in black ink. An original birth certificate, which includes parents' names and a raised seal, or a naturalization certificate. An old passport if it has been expired five years or longer. A driver's license or identification card. Children 15 years and younger need both parents to be present with photo ID, while children who are 16 or 17 need one present to be present with photo ID. Bring or obtain a passport photo, which can be obtained at the prothonotary's office for a $10 fee. The following fees apply, and are payable to the U.S. Department of State in the form of a check or money order (cash is not accepted): A passport book for residents 16 years and older is $130, a passport card is $30. A passport book for residents 15 years and younger is $100, and a passport card is $15. There is also $35 processing fee for each application, which is payable to the prothonotary's office. Smith said these fees may be cash, check or money order, and processing fees for multiple passports may be combined into one payment. There is no processing fee for active or retired military personnel. The processing time for a new passport is 4 to 6 weeks, according to officials. Residents can pay an additional $60 fee for the expedite service, in which a new passport can be processed in 2 to 4 weeks. Brighton independent living community spotlights National Caregivers Day
BRIGHTON, N.Y. (WROC) – Friday is National Caregivers Day, which serves as an opportunity to show appreciation for those who take care of their loved ones in times of need. One story comes right out of St. John's Meadows Independent Living Community in Brighton, where gratitude knows no bounds. Bill Smith was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in 2018. His wife, Barbara Smith, has been at his side throughout their journey. 'It's a busy thing. I'm kind of doing things for both of us,' said Smith. The Smiths are part of the St. John's Meadows community in Brighton, and there, they say they have found a true community. 'National Caregivers Day is very close to our hearts here at St. Johns. About four years ago during COVID, we started an initiative that was aimed at supporting specifically caregivers whose loved ones have dementia. We actually, about a year ago, were able to do a respite program, which provides free resources and respite to caregivers. They can get fellowship, engagement and activities – and the caregiver themselves gets to have some free time,' said Jennifer Lesinski, vice president of marketing at St. John's Meadows. Friday, the St. John's community highlighted selfless love and care in people like Barbara Smith, as well as the staff who are working to make a difference day in and day out. 'We know a lot of these folks are doing it behind the scenes and are not recognized. It's really hard for caregivers to get time away from the caregiving role. They're doing this 24/7. They often don't have the resources, especially if they don't have family in the area,' said Lesinski. For Smith, she says there's no shortage of gratitude to St. John's for helping to enhance the quality of life for her husband, and for herself. 'I guess it's just that, yes, it's a lot of work. And yes, it can be stressful. But there's some good things about it, too. I get to spend time with him at this point in our lives and although that time is sometimes stressful, it also is very good. It's very good to spend time together for both of us,' said Smith. St. John's Meadows is currently raising funds for a new comprehensive center that will be dedicated to treating dementia and supporting caregivers. Officials hope to open the center in 2026. Velocity Urgent Care Center rebrands to Sentara Urgent Care
PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A re-branding is underway for Velocity Urgent Care Centers in Virginia. Starting on Feb. 3, the 18 urgent cares will be called Sentara Urgent Care after Sentara gained full ownership of Velocity in December 2023. Adoption of Sentara's Epic electronic medical record took place in August of 2024. The transition to Sentara signage is underway. 'This branding process brings us full circle back to Sentara,' said Kurt Hofelich, vice president of ambulatory services for Sentara Health. 'We're glad to have Sentara Urgent Care back in the family.' In 2017, Sentara partnered with Velocity Urgent Care. They grew the chain into 18 centers throughout Virginia.
