Barber Takeover 1.0 empowers youth with free professional training
Participants observe a live demonstration by Dilly The Barber during the event on Friday night. MIRI (June 8): The Barber Takeover 1.0 2025 event, running from June 4 until today at the Miri Visitor Information Centre (VIC), features a free barber workshop designed for youth and individuals interested in pursuing a career in professional hairstyling. Organised by Posh Work in collaboration with Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) Miri branch and managed by event coordinator Siti Hawa Sarkawi, the initiative aims to equip participants with both basic and advanced haircutting skills, while also addressing the current shortage of skilled workers in local barbershops. According to Siti Hawa, the workshop offers comprehensive exposure, including modern cutting techniques, hair care, and customer service—all essential skills for those wishing to enter the industry. 'Many young people are interested in this field but don't know where to start. We're providing this platform for free so they can try it out, learn, and be ready to step into the real industry,' she said. In addition to technical training, the programme also plays a role in helping reduce unemployment among local youth. As a strategic partner, DUBS Miri has expressed its commitment to continue supporting such initiatives in an effort to strengthen Bumiputera youth participation in the skills and entrepreneurship sectors. Over the five-day event, attendees are also treated to live demonstrations by professional barbers, hands-on training sessions, and experience-sharing from successful industry players. Barber Takeover 1.0 is seen as a catalyst for empowering youth and advancing the local barbering industry through strategic collaboration between associations, the private sector, and the entrepreneurial community. MIRI (June 7): A total of 100 local residents received free haircuts during the two-day Barber Takeover 1.0 community programme, held on June 4 and 5 at the Miri Visitors Information Centre. The initiative, supported by the Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, aimed to ease the cost of living for local families as they prepare for the school reopening after the festive season. Of the total of recipients, 41 individuals benefitted on the first day, with 59 more receiving services on the second day. The majority of participants were primary school pupils. According to POSH WORK event manager Siti Hawa Sarkawi, the programme not only benefited the community but also serves as a platform for young barbers to showcase their skills. 'Programmes like this should be held regularly so their benefits can reach more people, while also strengthening community spirit and promoting entrepreneurship,' she said. Located on Jalan Melayu, the Miri Visitors Information Centre was chosen as the venue due to its role as a tourism hub and a site for various community events. Barber Takeover 1.0 also featured a free haircut workshop and sharing sessions, DJ and local talents performances, coffee and pastry booths, food trucks, and interactive activities for visitors. The strong public turnout reflected strong support for the inclusive and community-friendly event. Capping off the programme is the Barber Takeover Battle, set to take place this weekend (June 7 and 8), bringing together talented barbers from across Malaysia and Brunei. The organisers expressed their gratitude to Ting for his continued support, and hoped for future collaborations to further empower the local community. Barber Takeover free haircut lead miri
