Arsenal 'ladies saved the club' after Champions League crown, says Wright

Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright said the women's team have saved the north London club after they beat defending champions Barcelona 1-0 on Saturday to win their second Champions League title after an 18-year wait. Renee Slegers' Arsenal, featuring in their first Champions League final since lifting the trophy in 2007, held firm to deny favourites Barcelona a third consecutive European crown. Arsenal withstood a flurry of chances from Barcelona before forward Stina Blackstenius struck a winner in the 75th minute, to the delight of their 5,000 travelling fans at the Jose Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon. "The ladies have saved the club. We've got something to celebrate," Wright said, adding that Arsenal should hold a parade in north London for their Champions League win. "They have beaten Barcelona in the Champions League, no one gave them a chance. Even I was saying it was going to be tough because they average four goals a game. "The embarrassment of not getting anything this season when we played so well with the men," he said. The women "deserve everything they are getting, all the accolades because this is a magnificent achievement." Barcelona were playing in their sixth final in seven years, with a team widely regarded as the best in the world, featuring Ballon d'Or winners Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati, two of the most influential midfielders in the women's game.

Arsenal shock Barcelona to snatch Champions League glory

Barcelona Femeni's push for a third successive UEFA Women's Champions League title has been blocked by Arsenal. Pere Romeu's side headed into the final at Sporting CP's Estádio José Alvalade as strong favourites to win on the back of another dominant domestic campaign. Advertisement The Catalan giants defended their Liga F and Spanish Supercup titles from 2024 with a Copa del Reina final spot against Real Madrid already in the diary. However, there will not be a repeat of the 2024 trophy quadruple, as the Gunners upset the odds in the Portuguese capital. Arsenal end Barcelona's European dream in Lisbon Barcelona controlled the early stages, without really threatening Arsenal, and the English side saw an early goal ruled out. Irene Paredes' own goal was chalked off by VAR following an offside in the build up to the chance being created. Arsenal then carved out the better openings, but Barcelona improved after the restart, despite being unable to find that all-important goal. The crucial moment came with 15 minutes to go as substitute Stina Blackstenius crisply fired home from Beth Mead's superb pass. That allowed Arsenal to dig across 11 minutes of added time as Barcelona's European dream fizzled out. Barcelona Femeni's Champions League Defeat to Arsenal means Barcelona Femeni remain on three Champions League titles won from 2021, 2023 and 2024. Advertisement That keeps the Catalans as the third most successful side in the competition's history behind Eintracht Frankfurt on four and Lyon on eight. Romeu's charges still have two more games left to play this season as they take on Real Madrid in the Copa del Reina final on June 7 in Huesca. They are already through to the final of the Copa Catalunya Femenina but a date for their clash with Levante Badalona has not been set by the RFEF at this stage – but is expected to be after the other final. Barcelona president shares stands with UEFA chief and Luis Figo during Women's UCL final

Barcelona Femeni are on the hunt for their third successive UEFA Women's Champions League trophy tonight. The Catalan outfit are facing off against Arsenal in the finals of the competition at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon, Portugal. Advertisement Naturally, Barcelona president Joan Laporta is in attendance at the stadium to support the Femeni team as they seek to complete a hat-trick of European trophies. During the clash in Lisbon, though, one moment caught the eye of the fans in particular as Laporta was spotted sharing the stands with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin as well as former Barcelona and Real Madrid footballer Luis Figo. It is no secret that the relations between Barça and UEFA have been affected since the Super League project with Ceferin being a vocal advocate against the rogue league. Laporta will be hoping Barça Femeni win the UWCL. (Photo by Juan Manuel) Meanwhile, Figo is pretty much a persona non-grata as far as Barcelona fans are concerned, having left the club to join arch-rivals Real Madrid two decades ago. Advertisement It must be remembered that Figo, currently a UEFA ambassador, was involved in a minor altercation with a section of Barça supporters in Portugal earlier this week. So, it was certainly intriguing to see Laporta standing in close quarters with the former Portugal international as well as Ceferin. It must, however, be noted that Laporta was seen sharing a stand with Ceferin and Figo in close quarters in the last year's UWCL final as well which Barcelona went on to win. As far as the game is concerned, at half-time the scoreline reads 0-0 with Alexia Putellas, Aitanoa Bonmati & co. yet to break the deadlock.

We've got a tasty encounter between two of the best-supported clubs in women's European football. Barcelona take up the roles of resounding favourites. The Femeni have won this competition three times in the last four years and continue to set the gold standard. They have scored 196 goals, won 43 of 46 games in all competitions, and averaged more than four goals per game this season. In more instances than they have scored fewer than three goals (11), they have scored six or more goals (13). As for underdogs Arsenal, they've relished in the responsibility of spoiling the set norm. The Gunners are the only side in the history of the competition to go to the final after competing in the first qualifying round – securing top spot over Bayern Munich in the group before toppling Real Madrid and Lyon. Renée Slegers has overseen the North Londoners' second-half-of-season form with a clear understanding and delicate touch that has produced wonder to make the first final featuring an English side since Chelsea in 2020-21 – she'll need that and more to produce another magic act. Kick-off at the sold-out Estádio José Alvalade, 5pm GMT.
