Barnsley fold women's team amid financial pressure
Barnsley have folded their women's team after less than two years as a professional outfit because of financial open letter to fans from chairman Neerav Parekh explained the board were "devastated to have reached this tough decision" after the FA ruled the club's playing facilities were not up to the standard required for the women's fourth the Reds' majority owner insisted immediate action was required to avoid a financial drag on the rest of the club which could ultimately put the mens' and academy operations at have been informed by the FA that, despite mens' academy teams playing competitive league fixtures on the Showcase and 4G pitches adjacent to Oakwell, those facilities were not up to the standard required for the women's team. The board maintained moving the women's team into the main stadium or to another venue was neither financially nor logistically added it was with "great sadness" that the decision had been taken to withdraw from FA Women's National League ahead of the 2025-26 season."Whilst as a club we applaud the efforts of the FA to provide financial backing to the WSL and the Women's Championship, that funding does not trickle down sufficiently to the Women's National League and the financial restraints put upon the club this summer has driven us to make this difficult decision," said the statement, external."It may have been possible to obtain temporary dispensation from the FA, however this would only delay the inevitable decision around the additional costs of playing at a different venue. "Whilst this was not an easy or unanimous decision at board level, and we are devastated to have made this tough decision, it remains important that Barnsley FC continues to be a viable business."Incurring further significant losses would be irresponsible and reckless, impacting on both the club and community and putting the entire men's and academy operation at risk."Barnsley's board added they remained committed to the women's game and would continue to invest resources into grassroots football for women and girls in the local area.

New role for former Carlisle United favourite Keogh
Former Carlisle United favourite Richard Keogh has landed a new coaching role in League One. He has become assistant boss at Barnsley, having left his previous position at fellow third-tier club Blackpool. Keogh, 38, will be No2 to Conor Hourihane at Oakwell for the 2025/26 season. He had been on the coaching staff at Blackpool since last June. His arrival at Barnsley featured in a number of appointments as Hourihane, who took permanent charge in April. The Oakwell boss said of Keogh: "I've known Richard for a number of years, he is a natural leader and his reputation as a coach has grown massively in the past year. "I'm looking forward to working with him again and I know he has the experience, and the skill set required to help me implement my vision for how I want the team to play." Blackpool boss Steve Bruce expressed his regret at Keogh's departure but wished the former Blues defender well. "Naturally, we're disappointed to see him leave, but his new position allows him to be closer to his family and continue to progress in his coaching career. We wish him the very best for the future." Blackpool finished ninth in League One last season with Barnsley 12th. Republic of Ireland international Keogh was a favourite at Brunton Park during a two-year spell from 2008 to 2010. He made 88 appearances and scored six goals for the Cumbrians in that time, and was a popular player for his all-action style. He also had a seven-game spell on loan with the Blues in the 2007/08 season. Keogh's previous clubs include Bristol City, Wycombe Wanderers, Huddersfield Town, Cheltenham Town, Coventry City, Derby County, MK Dons, Blackpool, Ipswich Town and Forest Green Rovers. * Also in League One, meanwhile, former Carlisle United defender Macaulay Gillesphey helped Charlton Athletic reach the play-off final. He was in the Addicks side that defeated Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 in their second leg to go through by that scoreline on aggregate to face Leyton Orient in the final. Gillesphey's long ball forward led to Matty Godden's goal at The Valley that sent Nathan Jones' Charlton to the final on Sunday, May 25. In League Two, ex-Blues midfielder Brandon Comley featured as Walsall booked their place in the play-off final against AFC Wimbledon. He came off the bench in the Saddlers' 2-1 second-leg win over Chesterfield, sending them through 4-2 on aggregate. AFC Wimbledon defeated Notts County 1-0 to progress 2-0 on aggregate.

Football history project collects fans' memories
Barnsley FC fans have been invited to share their old photos and memorabilia of the club for a "digital archive" book. The project is being led by artist Julian Germain, who said he wanted to photograph possessions such as scarves and tickets. The book, called Barnsley FC: The People's Visual History, is scheduled to be published in November. Mr Germain said it would "shine a light on the connection people have with their club". So far Mr Germain has been given a photo of a fan with player Neil Redfearn in 1992; an album of pictures taken by Barnsley Chronicle sports reporter Selwyn Dunford in the early 1960s; and a completed "progress chart" for the 1973-4 team cut out from Shoot magazine. The project is supported by the club, its fan advisory board, and club sponsor Parliament. Mr Germain said it also explored the value of what could be seen as throwaway items, which people had instead chosen to keep. "A lot of the items that come along, in some way, are marked by the individual that owns them," he said. Some of the donated match programmes have been annotated with details of the size of the crowd or the scorers on the day, or have tickets taped to the cover. Mr Germain has previously published a visual history of Sunderland AFC's FA Cup win in 1973. However, he said Barnsley FC had "fantastic history". "It has always survived, even in the dark days of the 1970s when they were in Division Four for seven consecutive seasons." He added he would be particularly interested in meeting a fan who had supported the club during this period. On the season progress chart, which had results filled in, he said he was "amazed" it had survived. "There are quite a lot of valuable bits of memorabilia out there, and a lot of them are very lovely. "But something that was just in a kids' football magazine can be of just as much interest to me."
