Former R.I. Senator Coyne is running for lieutenant governor

Coyne served in the Senate from 2015 to 2023 after becoming the first Democrat to win the seat representing Barrington in more than 100 years. She served as a Barrington Town Council member from 2010 to 2014.

In an announcement video, Coyne highlighted her work in the State Police, including her work on narcotics and intelligence investigations, wearing a wire and going undercover, and fighting corruption and white-collar crimes.

'As a mother of four, I know that there are great challenges facing our state,' Coyne said. 'We need to tackle the high cost of housing, protect our aging adults, keep our communities safe, and make life more affordable for families.'
Coyne was born and raised in Pawtucket, and she attended the University of Rhode Island on an athletic scholarship for swimming. She was among the first women to graduate from the State Police Training Academy and she served as a State Trooper for more than 20 years.

Coyne is married to Gerald J. Coyne, who retired after 20 years as the state's deputy attorney general.
