Juneteenth celebrations happening in Adelanto and Barstow
Juneteenth celebrations across the High Desert will include food, music, dancing, art and other activities.
Juneteenth is the nation's latest federal holiday, which commemorates the end of Black slavery in the United States.
A Juneteenth Jubilee is scheduled from 3 to 7 p.m. on June 18, at Barstow Community College's Viking Lounge, 2700 Barstow Road in Barstow.
Host sponsor Barstow Community College Black Student Union said the event's theme is 'Unapologetically Free: Radiating Joy as Liberation.'
The jubilee will include food, games, activities, community connections and culture-rich programming.

All Smilez Loving Care Foundation will host its Smilez of Freedom celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 21, at Adelanto Stadium & Event Center at 12000 Stadium Way in Adelanto.
The free event will feature a kids zone, activities, dancing, food and vendors.

Juneteenth marks the actions of June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas when the last Black slaves of the Confederacy were ordered free following the arrival of Union troops to the state.
The day, which is also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, rose to national prominence in 2020 amid nationwide protests against ongoing racial inequities. The day was officially recognized as a federal holiday by President Joe Biden in 2021.
