Thailand Open boxing: Pawan Bartwal storms into quarters with dominant 5-0 win
Continuing his fine form, Indian boxer Pawan Bartwal cruised into the quarterfinals of the men's 55kg category at the 4th Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament with a commanding 5-0 win over Cambodia's Sao Rangsey on Sunday. India has fielded a 19-member strong contingent in the prestigious boxing tournament, held under the aegis of World Boxing Council-backed Asian body, that has attracted talented boxers from powerhouses like China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, South Korea and host Thailand. Hailing from Syupuri village in Uttarakhand, Pawan showed tactical maturity and ring control from the outset. He started cautiously, dodging early swings and waiting for his moment before landing a sharp punch to the face that set the tone. The 26-year-old repeatedly pinned his opponent in corners, and a brilliant bob-and-weave move midway through the second round opened the door for another clean strike. With tight defence and calculated aggression, he kept Rangsey on the back foot and sealed a unanimous decision—his second consecutive win of the tournament. An Indian Army man since 2017 and a National Championship silver medallist, Bartwal has been boxing since 2010. He now heads into the quarterfinals with strong momentum and eyes firmly set on a podium finish. On Saturday, Bartwal mixed his aggressive intent with quality defence to get the better of his local challenger in the opening round of the men's 55 kg weight category. National Games bronze medallist Sanju MS banked on her aggressive boxing style to decimate her Japanese opponent to reach the quarterfinals of the women's 60kg weight category. Sanju blanked Japan's Sarii Kokufu 5-0 while Bartwal fought back to beat Thailand's Thanarat Saengphet 4-1. Sanju, who has made a shift to traditional boxing after winning laurels in kickboxing, is known for her attacking style and went all guns blazing from the first round itself against Japan's Kokufu. In the day's other matches, Nikhil (60kg), Amit Kumar (65kg) and Hemant Yadav (70kg) were knocked out in the opening round.

Thailand Open Boxing: Sanju MS dominates Japan's Kokufu to reach women's 60kg quarters, Pawan Bartwal packs off Thailand's Saengphet to advance to next round
ANI 25 May 2025, 02:28 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], May 25 (ANI): National Games bronze medallist Sanju MS banked on her aggressive boxing style to decimate her Japanese opponent to reach the quarterfinals of the women's 60kg weight category while Army man and National Silver medallist Pawan Bartwal mixed his aggressive intent with quality defence to get the better his local challenger in the opening round of the men's 55 kg weight category at the 4th Thailand Open International Boxing 2025 at Bangkok on Saturday, as per a release from BFI. India has fielded a 19-member strong contingent in the prestigious boxing tournament, held under the aegis of World Boxing backed Asian body, that has attracted talented boxers from powerhouses like China, Kazakhastan, Uzbekistan, South Korea and host Thailand. On Saturday, Sanju blanked Japan's Sarii Kokufu 5:0 while Bartwal fought back to beat Thailand's Thanarat Saengphet 4:1. Sanju, who has made a shift to traditional boxing after winning laurels in kick-boxing is known for her attacking style and went all guns blazing from the first round itself against Japan's Kokufu. The 25-year-old landed a flurry of punches on the Japanese face in the second minute of the first round and the referee had to call for time out to ask the Japanese to adjust her head gear. The Japanese was then given a countdown at the end of the second round and Sanju just had to maintain her upper hand in the third to seal the semi-final spot. In the first bout of the day, Bartwal began cautiously in the opening round and his slightly passive approach meant that despite landing a few blows, Thai boxer Thanarat Saengphet looked slightly ahead after the first round. But the Indian changed gears in the second round, landing a flurry of his one-two combination punches to unsettle his opponent and gain the upper hand. Both the boxers came out swinging at the start of the third and final round but Bartwal soon took control by counter-attacking every time the Thai dropped his guard to win a 4:1 verdict. In the day's other matches, Nikhil (60kg), Amit Kumar (65kg) and Hemant Yadav (70kg) were knocked out in the opening round. Results: Men:55kg: Pawan Bartwal bt Thanarat Saengphet (Thailand) 4:1 60kg: Nikhil lost to Nakayama Sota (Japan) 0:5 65kg: Amit Kumar lost to Mark Ashley Fajardo (Philippines) 0:5 70kg: Hemant Yadav lost to Ismoilov Mukhammadazizbek (Uzbekistan) 0:5. Pakistan resorts to firing all across LoC, Indian Army responds ‘promptly and proportionately'
Pakistan resorted to firing all along the Line of Control (LoC) — from Kupwara and Baramulla in Kashmir to the plains of Akhnoor in Jammu — for the second time late Sunday, said the Indian Army. 'During the night of 04-05 May 2025, Pakistan Army posts resorted to unprovoked small arms fire across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor in J&K,' said Lieutenant Colonel Suneel Bartwal, PRO (Defence) Northern Command, here. Lieutenant Colonel Bartwal added that the Indian Army responded 'promptly and proportionately'. On Sunday, Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal A P Singh met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to brief him on the overall preparedness of the IAF. Air Chief Marshal Singh and PM Modi were said to have discussed the security scenario and the options on the table following the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22. Hours before their meeting, Indian Navy chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi also spoke to the Prime Minister on the situation in the northern Arabian Sea. Pakistani troops have been resorting to firing on the Indian side along the LoC during the night for more than 10 days since India suspended the Indus Water Treaty. However, the firing from the Pakistani side, which had earlier taken place in two or three sectors, has spread all along the LoC since Saturday night. So far, there have been no reports of any damage on the Indian side because of the Pakistani firing.
