Barwon Heads: Award-winning circular home by Jackson Clements Burrows hits market
A half-joking request to include a planetarium inside a Barwon Heads family's home was the catalyst for an award-winning circular design where stargazing is celebrated. Vendor John White was determined to think outside the square in replacing a tired 1950s beach house with one of the first luxury rebuilds in the coastal town. When architects Jackson Clements Burrows came up with the concept of a circular second-storey tower clad in vertical timber battens, he was all in. 'We wanted to keep away from the boxy, square, 90-degree angles that you normally see in a lot of residential construction,' Mr White said. 'We wanted something that was more organic, more curved, more natural looking, and the circular motifs and angles throughout the house eventuated out of that process. 'My wife came up with putting a skylight in the living room upstairs so we could watch the stars, like a mini planetarium.' The striking five-bedroom, three-bathroom residence, completed in 2009, wowed the judges at the 2010 Victorian architecture awards, winning the new house category. More than 15 years on, with their three children now living out of home, the couple are selling the extraordinary 1454sq m property at 12-16 Henley St, Barwon Heads. Bellarine Property listing agent Christian Bartley expects the listing, which includes a separately titled 484sq m vacant block, to fetch between $6.6m and $7.2m. Featuring cedar cladding, floor-to-ceiling windows and polished concrete, the timeless house champions sustainability with a 7.5-star energy rating, cross-flow ventilation and greywater recycling. It's set among established native gardens designed by local landscape architect Tim Nichols which incorporate a 16m saltwater swimming pool and outdoor fireplace. Mr White said the garden was one of the only things the family had changed since moving in. 'Tim actually did our garden twice. He did it initially when we first built the house, the kids were quite young so we had a trampoline and a cubby house,' he said. 'Then as they got older … we changed the garden to a bit more lawn.' Architect Jon Clements took inspiration from the original 1950s house on the site when it came to choosing playful colours for internal cabinetry. He said zoned family living was at the heart of the design, in which the circular first floor serves as a private parents' retreat with a main bedroom, study and living room. 'The house was really designed to nestle into that remnant vegetation and be quite discreet instead of prominent,' Mr Clements said. 'And, of course, it was also designed at the time from an environmental perspective in terms of cross-low ventilation and orientation.' As the winemaker behind Circulus Wines, it's perhaps no surprise that one of Mr White's favourite hangouts is the underground cellar. He said the house still attracted rubbernecking, even all these years later. 'It was a very different house for that part of Barwon Heads at that particular time but I like to think that what we did has influenced a lot of other design projects around Barwon Heads and other coastal areas,' he said.

Three men rescued after boat capsized near Geelong, Victoria; only one was wearing a life jacket, police say. Newly released aerial footage shows the rescue of a trio of boaters after their vessel capsized along the Australian coast. Published Sunday by Storyful, the video from Victoria state police shows the men treading water and clinging precariously to the hull of their overturned boat off the coast near Barwon Heads, southwest of Melbourne. Police say the men, ranging in age from 29 to 41, launched from a nearby boat ramp on the morning of May 9, then encountered trouble on their journey back, roughly 12 hours later. 'After a day of fishing, the men were attempting to return to shore when their boat overturned,' a Victoria Police release reads. 'All three men, only one of which was wearing a life jacket, were thrown into the water.' According to the release, the boat's captain was able to contact a family member, who alerted emergency services. Shortly after, the police Air Wing unit spotted the boat and directed volunteers from Life Saving Victoria to their location. The video clip shows a second boat approaching the overboard crew and pulling them to safety before returning to shore. Victoria Police said the men were taken to hospital for observation, and that an investigation into the incident is ongoing. Retired Supercars champion Paul Dumbrell finds buyer for beachside Barwon Heads pad
Retired racing car driver and former Total Tools boss Paul Dumbrell has wrapped up the sale of a beachside Bellarine Peninsula home he originally planned to bulldoze. Records show the Bathurst 1000 champion traded the five-bedroom house overlooking 13th Beach in Barwon Heads for $7m. His family splurged a combined record $10.2m on the exclusive 1275sq m property at 2 Stephens Pde and an older neighbouring home during the Covid coastal boom of 2020. The prized location, wedged between Barwon Heads Golf Club and the dunes, was intended to be the site of a new $6m luxury beachside mansion. But plans to demolish both existing houses to build a contemporary double-storey, seven-bedroom pad with basement parking for seven cars and an underground gym hit a snag when the City of Greater Geelong rejected the proposal. Both properties were relisted for sale separately through Bellarine Property, Barwon Heads agent Christian Bartley early last year, with a combined asking price upwards of $13m. The newer Swaney Draper architect-designed residence constructed from rammed earth, sandstone and timber at No. 2 was the pricier part of the package, advertised with $7.8m to $8.5m price hopes. Designed to blend into its natural surrounds, the house has commanding ocean views and a north-facing entertainer's deck overlooking the golf course's seventh fairway. A path directly across the road delivers you to 13th Beach within minutes. The property was withdrawn from sale in July but is understood to have later changed hands in a private off-market deal. Mr Bartley, who was not involved in the sale, declined to comment. He did, however, help broker the $3.3m sale of its four-bedroom weatherboard next door neighbour at 4 Stephens Pde, Barwon Heads after a seven-month campaign. At the time he said the new owners also planned a knockdown rebuild to capitalise on untapped views. Earlier this year Mr Dumbrell and his stepmother Lisa also sold a luxury Portsea pad for $5.7m. The successful businessman won two Super2 titles and seven Supercars Championship races before retiring from racing in 2018. He later became chief executive of Total Tools and in January this year was appointed chief executive of civil and construction supplier Jaybro Group.

Lavish Lepold oasis with 10-seat cinema, pool draws international interest
An overseas buyer is among those circling a one-of-a-kind urban oasis that offers all the trappings of a luxury lifestyle property in the heart of Leopold. The vendors have completed a lavish renovation of the four-bedroom, brick home at 12 Dahlhaus Court, creating an elegant entertainer that takes full advantage of its 3958sq m block. A 10-person home cinema, swimming pool and barbecue area with a pizza oven are part of the package. Bellarine Property, Barwon Heads agent Christian Bartley said the vendors were even willing to sell the home full furnished. 'The overseas person that inquired wants a walk-in, walk-out scenario so I just ran it past them and they are prepared to leave everything, apart from a few sentimental items,' he said. Mr Bartley is taking the property to auction on May 10, with an advertised price guide of $2.75m. He said the vendors had done an incredible job on the renovation and extension, even going so far as considering the colour of the salt chlorinated pool water, which is in full view from the living areas and main bedroom suite. 'It's a superior property and there's nothing else like that in Leopold,' he said. 'You are living on an acre and then you can also walk across the road to tennis courts, footy ovals and you walk straight down to the shops. Right on the corner there is pizza. 'It is one of the most unique locations where it's such a beautiful, large property, it's ideal for anyone who has got a number of kids. 'Throw in a movie room for when the kids have friends over and throw parties, the pool and there is an outdoor barbecue and pizza and space for any pets. 'If that property was in the heart of Geelong it would not have this price tag on it and you are only 10 minutes from Geelong.' The vendors have flipped the orientation of the entry and added an extra wing to house a new main bedroom suite and the home theatre featuring tiered seating, Atmos surround sound and acoustic plaster. The original main bedroom now forms a guest suite with its own walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, while the former study has been replaced and repurposed as a huge walk-in pantry. It adjoins a quality kitchen fitted with a Wolf oven, Gaggenau steamer and integrated Liebherr fridge/freezers at the heart of the open-plan living zone. 'It's chalk and cheese to what it was,' Mr Bartley said. Records show the property last sold for $1.15m in May 2021.

Breamlea: Architect-designed home sets record in beachside hamlet
An architect-designed two-storey home has set a new price bar in the beachside hamlet of Breamlea. The circa $2.1m sale at 4 Blyth St becomes the first property in the town to beat the $2m barrier. Bellarine Property, Barwon Heads selling agent Peta Walter said it's a beautiful home. 'It's so rare that a property of that calibre comes to market (in Breamlea), but it certainly was well received,' Ms Walter said. 'It was an enormous campaign with lots of inquiry and inspections – I feel like a lot of people have discovered Breamlea. 'It's always been one of the better kept secrets of the Bellarine. It's certainly got a lot of buyers who are actively watching it.' The 1229sq m property sold after an 11-week campaign when local buyers stepped forward. It had been listed with $2.1m to $2.3m price hopes Ms Walter said they seized the opportunity to purchase a home where all the work was done. The house occupies a position at the corner of Blyth and Vagg streets, a four-minute walk to the beach. The two-storey design offers four split levels. There are four bedrooms, including two master retreats with ensuites, and a separate ground floor wing with two bedrooms and a 'zen-inspired' bathroom. The cathedral ceiling and double-storey voids envelop two open-plan living spaces, while an upper level balcony off the mezzanine floor provides views across the dunes to Thirteenth Beach. A bespoke blackwood curved island bench, a walk-in pantry and a Falcon Professional+ FXP 90 dual fuel range cooker with a teppanyaki cooktop are featured in the renovated kitchen, while the dining area has custom glazing looking out to a tranquil Japanese-inspired garden with fishpond and outdoor shower. The home is all set for weekends and weekdays, including a workshop with an epoxy floor and custom lighting, storeroom, and split system airconditioning, and a vegetable garden is within a possum/rabbit-proof enclosure. Ms Walter said a lot of people have discovered the secret of the town that's capped in its size. 'You actually often find buyers that come and inspect have holidayed here as a child or they have some association with the town,' she said. 'You can't get any bigger than it is. There are a lot of coastal towns that are getting bigger, so it's nice to have that real classic coastal hamlet. 'There's not a lot of access to the beaches for tourism, so they actually do still remain quite locals-only beaches.' Five homes have traded hands in Breamlea so far this year, outstripping the number of transactions in recent years. Ms Walter has listed a nearby four-bedroom house at 3 Blyth St, with price hopes from $1.85m to $1.95m.
