Cyprus approves Chevron survey for Aphrodite gas pipeline to Egypt
Basant Ahmed
Cyprus has completed licensing procedures for Chevron to begin seabed surveys within Block 12 of the country's exclusive economic zone for a pipeline connecting the Aphrodite gas field to Egyptian infrastructure.
The surveys will commence on 4 June and continue until late October 2025, according to information obtained by Phileleftheros.
Chevron will conduct the research using the KOBI RUEGG vessel, which specialises in seabed surveys and technical data collection for offshore projects.
The Bahamas-flagged vessel is already positioned in the area and will gather technical data for the natural gas pipeline to Egypt.
A navigation warning (navtex) will be issued shortly to notify maritime traffic of the survey operations.
The development follows reactivation of the Aphrodite consortium's agreement with Cyprus in February, after being frozen since 2019.
The partnership includes Chevron Cyprus Limited, NewMed Energy LP, and BG Cyprus Limited.
A memorandum of understanding signed in Cairo in February between Cyprus, Egypt, and the Aphrodite consortium established the framework for commercialising the Aphrodite natural gas field through Egyptian infrastructure.
The surveys are a step toward developing Cyprus's offshore gas resources, which have remained largely untapped since their discovery.
The Aphrodite field contains an estimated 4.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves.
Chevron's pipeline project aims to transport gas from the Aphrodite field to existing Egyptian liquefaction facilities, providing an export route for Cypriot gas to international markets.
The survey operations will gather data on seabed conditions and pipeline routing options for the proposed subsea infrastructure linking Cyprus and Egyptian waters.
