Karnataka Shilpakala Academy to create unique sculptures from fallen trees

Karnataka Shilpakala Academy In a creative and eco-conscious initiative, theis set to transform fallen trees in Lalbagh into unique sculptures that enhance the garden's aesthetic appeal while promoting sustainable art. Recently, a 180-year-old Basari tree came crashing down in Lalbagh due to heavy rains. Rather than discarding the ancient wood, the Academy plans to repurpose it into a large-scale sculpture that will serve as a space for public enjoyment and recreation, particularly for children. The construction of this artwork is scheduled to begin soon. Lalbagh is home to many such old trees, and each year, a few of them naturally fall. The academy aims to creatively reuse these fallen trees by infusing them with sculptural artistry, thus crafting never-before-seen installations that elevate the garden's charm.'Today's young artists are increasingly turning to technology-based sculpting methods such as fiberglass and digital art. This shift is beneficial in many ways. If every artist were to use stone and wood exclusively, there would be a risk of increased tree cutting and excessive mining for stone. That would harm the environment,' said MC Ramesh, President of the Karnataka Shilpakala Academy. He added that using trees that have already fallen for artistic purposes is an environmentally friendly solution that avoids further damage to Ramesh noted that he had visited the site to inspect the fallen tree. 'Soon, I will revisit Lalbagh with sculpting experts to examine each part of the tree and determine how best to utilise it without wasting any portion. We'll then consult with senior officials to finalise the plan,' he added.
