Multi-award-winning vocalist Bassie ventures into pad drive after big MetroFM award victory
Stressful, joyful, fun. That's how Basetsana Maluleka best described her musical journey. Best known as Bassie, the vocalist has now officially cemented her place in the mainstream. It's been three years now since she took the leap of faith into what she's passionate about. So far, the 21-year-old has learned that 'You need to stand your ground when you want something'. From sacrificing sleep to be in studio to having her mother and siblings hold her down and support her whenever she needed it, she's living proof that it all pays off. At this year's MetroFM awards, Bassie scooped three of the biggest awards of the night with her song, Kwelanga 2.0. The song she made with M-Touch and Ranger, featuring Amaza, Zimmy, Tman Xpress and LeeMcKrazy won an award for best collaboration, best amapiano song and best music video. 'In Kwelanga, I was writing about my pain as if I'm writing in a journal; it helped me heal and I felt it could heal others,' she adds. The lyrics give hope that life will get better eventually. After this massive victory, the multi-award-winning artist will now be focusing on her other passions. She tells Drum that she's working on a sanitary drive that'll uplift young girls in the country. Amapiano sensation Bassie lit up the 2025 Metro FM Awards with a triumphant sweep, claiming three of the night's top honours for her chart-topping anthem Kwelanga 2.0 . Her powerful vocals and genre-defining sound not only dominated the airwaves but also reaffirmed her place at the forefront of South Africa's music scene. Basetsana Maluleka, known to fans as Bassie, is a vocal sensation who rose from the streets of Windmill Park, Boksburg, to the national spotlight. A born performer, she began singing at just six years old, became a cheerleader by 12, and led as a school conductor at Sunward Park High by 18. Despite that, we managed to feature everyone in the music video while staying true to my story.' She also revealed that fans can anticipate exciting collaborations as she continues to develop her sound and reach.
