Baton Rouge man arrested, accused of shooting repair man

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Baton Rouge Police Department has arrested a man accused of shooting another man during an argument Thursday night. According to an arrest affidavit, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 1600 block of Blanche Court. When they arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim told detectives he had been shot by a 'heavy-set Black male wearing a hair scarf or rag.' While canvassing the area, officers spotted a man matching that description leaving a nearby home. The man, later identified as Bradford Williams, 47, reportedly locked the door behind him and approached police. After being read his Miranda rights, he shouted, 'I wanted to kill him.' Williams was detained and placed in a patrol car. While officers secured the scene, they overheard Williams on a phone call, captured on dashcam video, admitting to the shooting. The victim told investigators he had been working on plumbing at the home and was given $40 by Williams to buy materials. Upon returning, he gave Williams his change and mentioned he needed more supplies. According to the victim, Williams became agitated and demanded he 'do something' for him. Williams then went inside the home, returned with a rifle, and fired six to seven shots, which hit the victim in the leg. Williams was arrested and booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon. No bond amount has been set, according to jail records. Community rallies for Baton Rouge Police officer who lost his son

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Baton Rouge is showing up in a big way to help a Baton Rouge Police officer who recently lost his son. Friend of BRPD officer Gabe Walters' family and former New York Bagel manager Kathleen Wilkins said her husband has worked with Walters and has nothing but nice things to say about him. 'They struggled with him in the NICU for 365 days,' said Wilkins. 'What I saw resonated with me. We had babies in the NICU. I know how hard that can be – and so to lose a kid so suddenly – I couldn't even imagine. He always talked about how Gabe would go with him when he answered calls. He was very busy, but so helpful.'When Wilkins heard that Walters' oldest son, 8-year-old Cason, had passed away unexpectedly after a procedure, she knew she wanted to do something to help. Owner of New York Bagel Jay Gomez said 20% of Wednesday's proceeds will go towards helping Walters' family to offset the cost of medical and funeral bills. 'When that happened, she said, 'Let's do something for this family.' I said 'Of course,' we're still friends, so I'm glad to help,' said Gomez. 'It felt like the right thing to do to help this family, he helps our community. It's the least I can do to give back.'Wilkins said she's pleased with the results so far. She's seen the GoFundMe she set up for the Walters get closer and closer to its goal.'Mayor Sid Edwards came, he's incredibly nice,' said Wilkins. 'Anyone can donate, on their time, on the GoFundMe. Any money can help.'Click here to donate to the Walters family to help with medical and funeral expenses.
