Nebraska and Trae Taylor making push for highly-touted 2027 offensive tackle Class of 2027 Nebraska football quarterback commit Trae Taylor was busy over the weekend, as he was on campus actively recruiting as well as participating in the Battle of the Boneyard tournament. Taylor was active on social media and encouraged Nebraska fans to show love to Mark Matthews. Matthews is the seventh overall player nationally in the 2027 class, the second overall offensive tackle, and the top player in his class, per the On3 recruiting rankings. This was his first time in Lincoln, and he has taken three other unofficial visits. He has taken two visits to Miami on February 1 and March 18, and he also visited the Florida Gators on March 14. It will be tough to pull Matthews out of the state of Florida. Nevertheless, Nebraska has been making Florida a priority recruiting area, and they have been able to land several players out of the state. They are beginning to recruit heavily for the 2027 class, and Matthews would be viewed as a cornerstone commitment. Former Panthers HC Matt Rhule reunites with franchise great Cam Newton If you don't want to be brought back down memory lane to the 2021 Carolina Panthers, then you may want to proceed with caution. The "Battle of the Boneyard," one of the nation's top 7-on-7 football camps, took place on Friday at the University of Nebraska's Memorial Stadium. On hand for the event was former Panthers head coach and current Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule, who just so happened to run into a familiar face . . . Panthers legend Cam Newton, who was in attendance in Lincoln to join his C1N team, shared a sideline with Rhule for half of the 2021 campaign. That short union, or reunion in Newton's case, saw the Panthers lose seven of eight games in punctuating a disappointing 5-12 season. But despite those results, and even a little rockiness that came on the way, Newton took a liking to Rhule during his brief time back in Carolina. "Matt Rhule was an unbelievable guy," Newton said on his YouTube show in March of 2024. "So much so, that when I say 'unbelievable,' I'm like, yo, he's a guy that I would kick it with. We had great conversations. We had great meetings and great insights on the game, family, religion—just the whole process to how we both got to this situation." Future Nebraska quarterback Trae Taylor recruiting top tight end Ahmad Hudson A Nebraska quarterback commit is developing a relationship and actively peer recruiting the top tight end in the class of 2027. Ahmad Hudson teamed up with future Husker Trae Taylor at the Nebraska-sponsored 7 on 7 tournament, Battle of the Boneyard. Hudson measures in at 6 feet 7 inches, 220 pounds, and is the No. 1-ranked tight end in the 2027 class. As a sophomore, he caught 41 passes for 718 yards and six touchdowns. He's also an accomplished basketball player, averaging 21 points and 14 rebounds per game last season. Taylor is the third overall quarterback in the 2027 class and the third overall player in his class from the state of Illinois, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Last season, he threw for 3,061 yards, 20 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, per statistics from MaxPreps. He also carried the football 41 times for 342 yards and four touchdowns. This isn't the first time Taylor has connected with Hudson. Since committing to Nebraska, the future quarterback has been active in his recruitment of other top players in the 2027 recruiting class. It's good to see a future Husker taking active steps to load the class with as much talent as possible. Nebraska hosted 7 on 7 tournament praised by players and coaches Nebraska Football hosted the Battle of the Boneyard 7 on 7 tournament on Friday, and it is proving to be a success. Multiple 7 on 7 coaches have confirmed that other events have already reached out to learn how Nebraska is running the weekend. This was reported by Tim Verghese on Friday. Verghese also noted that this is the first-ever sponsored brand tournament on the Nebraska campus. The tournament itself was sponsored by Adidas. Class of 2027 Nebraska football quarterback commit Trae Taylor elected to be part of this, playing on the Miami Raw team. He had a productive day on Friday and was able to connect with fellow 2027 recruit Ahmad Hudson for multiple touchdowns. Hudson is the top tight end in the 2027 class per Rivals rankings. Several prominent figures in the NFL circle showed up as well. Former Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton came to Lincoln, as his 7 on 7 team, C1N was present. Former Nebraska football running back Ameer Abdullah also made an appearance on Friday. All in all, this appears to be another successful venture organized by the football program and athletic department. There should be a ton of news to come out of this weekend.
