BayCare aligns with Northwestern and its renowned medical school

BayCare has signed a deal with Northwestern Medicine, a collaboration that officials say is a critical step in the nonprofit's bid to expand its academic health system Northwestern is a nationally renowned academic health system through its partnership with the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Its deal with BayCare will provide more access to advanced medical treatments, expand clinical research and improve training and education for current and future physicians in the Tampa Bay region, officials said. 'This isn't the beginning, it's the next step in a journey we've been focused on for years,' BayCare President and CEO Stephanie Conners said in a news release. 'West Central Florida deserves more access to academic medicine and by entering into a strategic collaboration with Northwestern Medicine, we will accelerate our trajectory as an academic health system.' Academic health systems are designed to innovate and produce leading edge treatments by integrating clinical care with research and education. Locally, Tampa General Hospital bills itself as the region's only academic health system through its 50-year partnership with USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. BayCare already partners with the University of South Florida and Florida State University for sponsorship of residency programs in family and sports medicine. The collaboration with Northwestern will lead to new educational and training opportunities, making BayCare a more attractive option for physicians, residents, and students, officials said. Headquartered in Chicago, Northwestern operates 11 hospitals and more than 200 diagnostic and out-patient centers. Its flagship facility, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, has been named to the Best Hospitals Honor Roll by U.S. News and World Report for 13 consecutive years. The Feinberg School of Medicine received $742 million in research funding and awards in 2024, with 15 of its departments among the top 20 National Institute of Health award recipients. 'We are focused on collaborating with likeminded organizations that are driven by providing patients with greater access to world-class compassionate care, closer to where they live and work,' Northwestern President and CEO Howard Chrisman said in a statement. 'By collaborating with BayCare, we have the opportunity to train and educate the next generation of medical professionals and transform the clinical offerings to patients in West Central Florida.' BayCare, which operates 16 hospitals and more than a hundred clinics in the region, plans to house its academic and research operations in a 36-acre office park that it purchased for $145 million earlier this year. The site, adjacent to St. Joseph's, St. Joseph's Children's and St. Joseph's Women's hospitals in West Tampa, will be named the BayCare Academic Health and Research Corridor.

BayCare and Northwestern Medicine partner to improve healthcare services in Florida

US-based health systems BayCare and Northwestern Medicine have partnered to broaden access to medical treatment and improve clinical research, training and education for physicians in West Central Florida. The initiative is expected to increase BayCare's capacity to attract, retain and train healthcare professionals to meet increasing patient demands in the region. It is part of BayCare's growth strategy for the Florida region, particularly the Tampa Bay area. BayCare president and CEO Stephanie Conners said: 'This isn't the beginning, it's the next step in a journey we've been focused on for years. 'West Central Florida deserves more access to academic medicine and by entering into a strategic collaboration with Northwestern Medicine, we will accelerate our trajectory as an academic health system.' Both organisations have signed a definitive agreement and have begun the first phase of the partnership, focusing on educational and professional development for clinicians and clinical research advancement. The partnership was announced on 5 June at Tampa Bay Park, where BayCare recently acquired three office buildings. Northwestern Memorial HealthCare president and CEO Howard Chrisman said: 'We are focused on collaborating with like-minded organisations that are driven by providing patients with greater access to world-class compassionate care, closer to where they live and work. 'By collaborating with BayCare, we have the opportunity to train and educate the next generation of medical professionals and transform the clinical offerings to patients in West Central Florida.' Northwestern Medicine provides care across 11 hospitals and more than 200 ambulatory and diagnostic sites in Chicago, Illinois, with Northwestern Memorial Hospital as its primary facility. BayCare operates 16 hospitals and numerous other facilities. The partnership with Northwestern Medicine will not affect its ownership, leadership or board composition. Last year, BayCare partnered with Cadence to launch a remote patient monitoring and responsive virtual care programme. "BayCare and Northwestern Medicine partner to improve healthcare services in Florida" was originally created and published by Hospital Management, a GlobalData owned brand. BayCare Expands Nurse Well-Being Program Systemwide

CLEARWATER, Fla., May 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- BayCare Health System's successful effort to address nurses' stress is expanding across all 16 of its acute-care hospitals in 2025. The nurse well-being program will spread to more than 160 inpatient units, following a successful three-year pilot that significantly improved staff retention, communication and workplace culture. The program, Nurse Well-Being: Building Peer and Leadership Support, was originally piloted in select units over the past three years. Results from St. Joseph's, St. Anthony's and Winter Haven hospitals showed dramatic improvements in nurse burnout, workplace communication and turnover rates—key concerns in a post-pandemic health care environment. Building on that success, BayCare began rolling out the program systemwide this April, starting with children's and women's units. The expansion continues in May, coinciding with national efforts to spotlight Mental Health Awareness Month. 'The nurse well-being program shines a light on ways we can help our nurses build resilience, navigate workplace challenges and develop strategies to maintain their well-being,' said Trish Shucoski, DNP, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, chief nurse executive at BayCare. 'The expansion of the program is a testament to our commitment to nurse well-being. By fostering a supportive environment, we are not only enhancing the health of our nurses but also improving patient care outcomes.' BayCare was one of four health systems in the nation selected by the American Nurses Foundation (ANF) for the pilot project, Nurse Well-Being: Building Peer and Leadership Support, which features the Stress First Aid (SFA) program, a peer-to-peer model originally designed for high-stress professions like the military and first responders. The program is partially funded by a grant of almost $500,000 received by BayCare from the ANF. 'Our team members are our greatest asset at BayCare. Prioritizing their well-being is not just a responsibility, but a commitment to fostering a supportive and thriving work environment,' said BayCare President and CEO Stephanie Conners. Pilot Program Outcomes The pilot's key improvements included: 'This isn't just another training or checklist — it's changing the culture,' said program champion and BayCare's advanced nursing educator, Rocky Hauch, DNP, RN, PCCN. 'It's not just about a person reaching out for help, or leadership identifying when someone is stressed. Colleagues support and look out for one another. It's on all of us to identify the signs of stress in the people we work with. ' The SFA model Is a self-care and peer support model that represents a balance between job demands and resources, focusing on team member well-being. It provides a shared framework and a common language for discussing stress and improving communication. SFA also focuses on peer support rather than relying solely on individual recovery and wellness. This program works in collaboration with existing services like Employee Assistance Programs (EAP), nurse coaches and chaplains, making it an integrated piece of BayCare's broader well-being strategy. Hauch said the program is already making an impact. 'Our goal now is to bring this same approach to departments beyond nursing in 2026.' Leading the Way in Workforce Well-Being The expansion of the Stress First Aid program builds on BayCare's growing national reputation for team member well-being. On May 1, BayCare was awarded the new Well-Being Excellence™ designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) — the first and only health system in Florida to receive this honor. This designation reinforces BayCare as the best place to work, receive and provide care, and is inclusive of our well-being initiatives to build a people-first culture. The designation recognizes BayCare's extraordinary commitment to its team members, including its more than 10,000 nurses. 'We are honored that BayCare has been recognized as a national leader and pioneer in promoting well-being and resilience,' said Trish Shucoski, DNP, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, BayCare's chief nurse executive. 'This award is an exciting way to demonstrate that our team members feel supported, valued and equipped to thrive.' BayCare is one of five organizations nationally to receive the new credential. The Well-Being Excellence™ designation evaluates and enhances well-being programs within health care organizations and other settings that employ nurses, using an evidence-based framework to evaluate: ANCC created the new designation in response to the urgent need for effective well-being programs to support health care professionals. Nurse burnout is a significant issue in health care, with 46% of health care workers reporting feelings of burnout in 2022, up from 32% in 2018, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). 'This prestigious national recognition is a symbol to our patients, our community and our industry that we are deeply committed to the health and well-being of our team members,' said Nikki Daily, BayCare's chief team resources officer. To receive the 2025 ANCC Well-Being Excellence credential, BayCare submitted a detailed application outlining the ways it currently supports team member well-being, including: 'I am truly encouraged to note the leadership of these pioneering organizations in obtaining this innovative credential. Workplace well-being is critical in improving the overall health of the nation's workforce,' said ANCC President Laura J. Wood, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN. 'Organizational cultures contribute to both team effectiveness and personal well-being. I look forward to seeing more organizations eager to pursue this qualification given its evidence-based framework and aim to cultivate a culture of well-being within a given workplace and throughout extended communities.' This recognition joins a growing list of honors BayCare has received locally and nationally for its workplace culture, reinforcing its reputation as a leading not-for-profit health care system and an employer of choice across West Central Florida.
